If you paid less than $1,000 you did not get ripped off. We have 220,000 miles on our Golf. We have had few repairs like a hose blew out once at 100,000 miles. It still uses no oil and is till zippy. Bob

I just bought one for $1400.00(3-14-08)it has 133k miles, missing the radio....all the clear coat is off the roof. The head gasket and valve cover gasket have been replaced, along with muffler/tail pipe and rear brake pads and seal. very clean on the inside.... my 10 yr old son thinks is a hunk of junk... but i am driving a dodge ram diesel that gets 14-18 mpg at $4.09 a gallon for diesel...and gas is now $3.15 a gallon....so i may have paid a little more than i would six months ago...but should make up in several months in fuel savings...

You should never ever worry about paying a little too much for a good Golf if you divide by the number of years and miles it will deliver you in the long run. I bought my 86, (1.8 5 spd.) in 1998 for $700. It had 169,000 miles on it and felt like a new car in every way. Literally everything worked properly from the AC to the rear wiper. It remains my daily driver today, 14 years later and now has 450,000 miles on the clock. It has needed a grand total of three unexpected non routine/maintenance repairs in the time I have owned it. It is still the most reliable car I have ever owned, still routinely delivers 42 MPG on the highway, and uses just about a quart of oil between changes. I put over 500 miles on it in one weekend including keeping up with Chicago freeway traffic just a few weeks ago. I have considered replacing it more times than I can count, but the question that I can never answer is why?

over 5 years ago I gave $1,300 for my 86 golf. It has been reliable every day for over 5 years. Just make sure at least twice a year you replace the fuel filter. I have over 214,000 on her now
