What does the red 'STOP' warning sign means when comes up on the dashboard

This sign has been popping and beeping 3 times for the last 2 days. I have to use the car on a long trip this wkend so i took into the garage today and they advised that nothing came up as an error. Is this safe to continue driving?
Its a 1.8 GTI and i have had it for 5 years.

does the STOP warning come up after going into the shop ? is the Garage Volkswagen specific, or do they work on all manufacturers ' vehicles ? independent shops may not be able to read the Fault codes.
