What could cause my abs light to appear as well as a winding noise that won't stop even when the vehicle is shut off?

Sounds like the ABS pump could be making the noise. Take it to AutoZone or someplace like that and have them read the codes. Then you will know for sure.

Light is on to tell you there is a problem. If you are not sure, get an ODBII readout to pinpoint the problem.
