2023 Dodge Durango Reviews Summary

The evolution of the Dodge Durango exemplifies how the Stellantis brand has evolved from a mainstream competitor to Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, and Toyota into a niche brand emphasizing muscle-car attitude.

The Durango was Dodge's first modern SUV, arriving for the 1998 model year as the brand's entry into the midsize SUV segment. The current, third-generation Durango dates all the way back to the 2011 model year. But, as Dodge has found with the Challenger coupe and Charger sedan, a vehicle's lifespan can be greatly extended with an added dose of horsepower.

The 2023 Dodge Durango lineup starts with the base SXT trim level and moves up through the GT, R/T, Citadel, and SRT 392. Changes for 2023 include standard heated front seats, optional forward collision warning for the Durango SXT, and some new colors (bringing the total color palette to eight).

However, the big news for 2023 is the return of the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and its devilish supercharged V8 engine. The Hellcat was previously available only for the 2021 model year as a limited edition, but now it's a regular production model. That being the case, the Hellcat ended up as our test vehicle for this Dodge Durango review.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS model series, the 2024 Mercedes GLS offers something for anyone who can afford it. This year, minor styling modifications, fresh colors and trim, more standard equipment, enhanced off-roading technology, and a new version of its MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) infotainment system update the large three-row SUV for 2024. The changes are welcome, improving an already appealing luxury vehicle.

Verdict: Often, when you buy something expensive, it fails to meet expectations. That’s not the case with the terrific 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Yes, the price of entry is steep. But the gratification of living with one every day makes it worthwhile.

2023 Dodge Durango

9/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

CarGurus experts rate the 2023 Dodge Durango 9 out of 10 and the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class 9 out of 10 for look and feel.

Entering its 12th model year without a redesign, the Durango is certainly a familiar face. Dodge leaves the faux ruggedness to other brands, going for clean, almost car-like styling. Its slim styling, flanked by forward-leaning headlights, and the large lower air intake show that SUVs can have presence without big grilles. At the back, Dodge’s signature “racetrack” taillights give the Durango a distinctive look.

There is a soft sensuality about modern Mercedes design that borders on boring, but it ages well, especially if you upgrade the wheels. Our GLS 450 test vehicle had gorgeous, bright-finish 22-inch AMG rims perfectly paired with the SUV’s new silver four-louver grille design, polished metal exterior accents, and lustrous Twilight Blue paint color.

Performance

2023 Dodge Durango

9/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

CarGurus experts rate the 2023 Dodge Durango 9 out of 10 and the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class 8 out of 10 for performance.

The 2023 Durango is available with a plethora of powertrains, starting with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that's standard on the SXT, GT, and Citadel trim levels. The muscular SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat models get some unique styling features, and the SRT Hellcat ups the ante with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that produces 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque.

The GLS 450 is the most affordable version of this SUV, featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology. From there, you can upgrade to the GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS 600. Those versions have a twin-turbo V8 with MHEV, and power ratings vary depending on the model.

Form and function

2023 Dodge Durango

8/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

CarGurus experts rate the 2023 Dodge Durango 8 out of 10 and the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class 7 out of 10 for form and function.

The Durango is offered in seven-seat or six-seat configurations. Dodge doesn't give up much to other three-row midsize SUVs when it comes to interior space. Small-item storage space is generous as well, and the Durango also has plenty of muscle for towing.

When you get the optional AMG Line package, it installs sportier styling including side sill trim that gets in the way each time you enter or exit the SUV. Thanks to supple leather surfaces, heating and ventilation, massage programs, and a wide range of adjustments, the test vehicle’s front seats were perfectly comfortable.

Technology

2023 Dodge Durango

8/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

CarGurus experts rate the 2023 Dodge Durango 8 out of 10 and the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class 9 out of 10 for technology.

SXT and GT models get an 8.4-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity. The Durango may be one of the oldest vehicles currently on sale, but periodic tech updates mean the infotainment experience is comparable to more recently redesigned rivals.

Mercedes equips the 2024 GLS with its latest MBUX infotainment system. In this application of the technology, a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen live side-by-side on a horizontal plane. MBUX is otherwise a sensational technology that should serve as a model for the automotive industry.

Safety

2023 Dodge Durango

4/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

10/10

CarGurus experts rate the 2023 Dodge Durango 4 out of 10 and the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class 10 out of 10.

The 2023 Dodge Durango didn't get the full battery of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests—and results were mixed for the tests the IIHS did conduct. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave a 2023 Durango a four-star overall safety rating.

Safety comes standard on the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS. The forward-collision warning system gets your attention without grabbing it, and the lane-keeping assist system steps in with sharp corrective action only when absolutely necessary.
