2019 BMW X5 Reviews SummaryThe BMW X5 redefined SUVs 20 years ago, leaning into the idea that you could have truck form and car function all in one package. In fact, BMW branded the original X5 as an SAV—a Sport Activity Vehicle—to help emphasize the fact that it drove as well as the company's famous sport sedans. And while that claim was a bit of an overreach, the original X5 did outperform its SUV competitors on the road. Now in its fourth generation, BMW’s midsize crossover continues to deliver on that two-decade-old promise: The X5 delivers car-like handling in an SUV form. And while the 2019 X5 stretches 1 inch longer, 3 inches wider, and 1 inch taller than last year's model, you’d have to look closely to notice the differences. Most obvious is a new and bigger kidney grille with active shutters. It has already received flak for being “comically large,” though in my opinion, it seems proportional to the rest of the vehicle—enough to make me wonder if the grilles on previous iterations of the X5 were too small. Inside, you’ll find a redesigned interior with an updated version of the iDrive system, and a suite of Level 2 autonomous technology that unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. But that shouldn’t dissuade you from BMW’s revolutionary recreational vehicle, because there’s still a lot to love.
2020 Ford Edge Reviews SummaryThe Ford Edge isn’t exactly memorable, which isn’t a bad thing. It isn’t a good thing either. Cars can be remembered for attractive design, fun driving dynamics, or being a solid value. They can also be remembered in a negative light for a polarizing design, poor build quality, or being unsafe to the point of scandal. But the 2020 Ford Edge is just... there. It is a midsize two-row SUV that doesn’t offend, but also doesn’t “wow.” But just as critically, the Edge is getting long in the tooth. In the SUV segment, constant iteration is necessary for survival, and the Edge is in need of a redesign. But in lieu of new blood, Ford has done well to keep the Edge fitted with the latest infotainment and safety technology. It also offers a performance variant, called the Edge ST. This is something that you won’t find in the Edge’s competitors, the Nissan Murano and Honda Passport. But is it enough to keep the Edge relevant against its more contemporary rivals? Read on to find out.

The 2019 BMW X5 was designed to offer a sedan-like driving experience despite its 5,000-pound weight and tall stature. BMW focused on providing a smooth ride on pavement rather than off-road capabilities, which was a forward-thinking move. The X5 featured a five-passenger layout, expandable to seven, though the third row was cramped. It came with two turbocharged engine options: a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder and a 4.4-liter V8, both paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The base xDrive40i started at $60,700 and included a suite of impressive features and safety technologies. Various packages allowed for extensive customization, but the price could quickly escalate.
The 2020 Ford Edge, introduced in 2006 and updated in 2019, was based on the Ford Fusion platform, offering a car-like ride and ample cabin space. The second-generation Edge, refreshed in 2019, carried over to 2020 with a design reminiscent of the Fusion. The interior showed signs of aging, with awkwardly arranged controls and a mix of soft-touch materials and hard plastics. The Edge was available in SE, SEL, Titanium, and ST trims, each offering a range of features. The SE trim included essentials like a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and SYNC 3 infotainment, while higher trims added more luxury and convenience features.

The 2019 BMW X5 excelled in performance, particularly with its turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine in the xDrive40i, delivering 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The 8-speed ZF automatic transmission provided smooth and efficient shifts, contributing to the X5's impressive EPA-estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg city, 26 highway, and 22 combined. The xDrive50i's 4.4-liter V8 offered even more power, with 456 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in around 4 seconds. The X5's ride quality was enhanced by its Cluster Architecture platform and optional air suspension, providing a smooth yet sporty experience.
The 2020 Ford Edge came standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 250 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. This engine provided solid low-end acceleration, though it struggled at higher speeds. The Edge ST, with its 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, delivered 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, offering a more engaging driving experience. The ST's Sport mode enhanced throttle response and transmission mapping, while its heavy steering and excellent cornering made it feel like a smaller vehicle. The Edge's suspension balanced comfort and refinement, making it suitable for American roads.
The 2019 BMW X5's interior featured aggressive angles and dual 12.3-inch screens for the updated iDrive infotainment system. However, the entry-level trim felt less luxurious compared to competitors. The seats were somewhat uncomfortable, with limited lumbar support and no ventilation, making the $1,600 Luxury Seating package a worthwhile addition. The X5 offered ample space, with 33.9 cubic feet of cargo space expandable to 72.3 cubic feet. The air suspension made loading easier, and the X5 could tow up to 7,200 pounds when properly equipped.
The 2020 Ford Edge's cabin layout provided a commanding view of the road and plenty of storage compartments. The second-row seats offered generous head- and legroom without compromising front-seat comfort. The Edge provided 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 73.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. This cargo capacity was competitive within its class. The SEL and Titanium trims included a hands-free foot-activated power rear liftgate, adding convenience for loading and unloading.
The 2019 BMW X5's technology was a mixed bag. The gesture control and voice commands were inconsistent, and the iDrive interface, while well-designed, required time to master. The Driving Assistance Plus package offered limited hands-off driving capabilities but struggled with high-speed operation. The adaptive cruise control was more reliable. Optional features included Parking Assistant Plus, a night-vision system, and a rear-seat entertainment system. The Harman Kardon stereo provided excellent sound quality, with an optional Bowers & Wilkins system for audiophiles.
The 2020 Ford Edge came standard with the SYNC 3 infotainment system, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen with intuitive controls and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Navigation was optional on the SEL and ST trims and standard on the Titanium, which also included SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link. The Edge offered two smart-charging USB ports and an optional dual rear-seat entertainment system. The semi-digital instrument panel was available on the SEL and ST trims and standard on the Titanium.
The 2019 BMW X5 featured a new brake-by-wire setup, providing a nearly natural feel with some feedback during the final moments of braking. The X5 received a 4-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS, with top scores in all tests.
The 2020 Ford Edge came standard with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including front and side-impact airbags, AdvanceTrac traction control, and the Ford Co-Pilot360 system. The Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package added adaptive cruise control and active lane centering. The Edge received a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.
