The Toyota Corolla has a long and storied history in the U.S., where it will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2027, and the hybrid first entered the lineup for the 2020 model year. The Corolla is now in its 12th generation, and as a compact sedan with a hybrid powertrain, its primary competitors include the Honda Civic Hybrid and the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. If the powertrain is less important, buyers might also cross-shop the Kia K4 and the Mazda3. The 2027 Toyota Corolla Hybrid has three trims: LE, SE, and XLE.

What’s New for the 2027 Toyota Corolla Hybrid
The Toyota Corolla Hybrid had a mid-cycle refresh in 2023, which included new front and rear styling, more standard safety tech, and an updated infotainment system. The 2027 model is essentially a carryover with minor package updates, except for one big addition—the 60th Anniversary Special Edition. This package is based on the SE trim and unique to the hybrid lineup. It adds 18-inch machined black-finish alloy wheels, Ice Cap or Supersonic Red paint, the 10.5-inch infotainment screen, and special 60th Anniversary badging. This model will be limited to 2,500 units in the U.S.
Design
The Corolla Hybrid has compact sedan styling and adopts the trapezoidal grille and slender headlights seen throughout the manufacturer's lineup. The only telltale sign that this is a hybrid is the discreet HEV badging on the trunk lid. In base LE trim, there are 16-inch steel wheels as standard, with optional 16-inch alloys. While XLE trim includes 16-inch alloy wheels, SE trim comes standard with 18-inch examples. There are no appearance packages on the Corolla Hybrid.
Powertrain
The Corolla Hybrid is equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and paired with Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system. It has an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) and delivers a total combined output of 138 horsepower. All trims come standard with front-wheel drive (FWD), but the LE and SE trims offer all-wheel drive (AWD) for $1,400. FWD models will get between 50 and 53 mpg in the city, depending on trim, and between 43 and 46 mpg on the highway. AWD fuel economy is also trim-dependent, ranging between 47 and 51 mpg in the city and 41 and 44 mpg on the highway.

Interior
The 2027 Toyota Corolla Hybrid seats five, but as a compact sedan it’s better suited to four. Trunk space rings in at 13.1 cubic feet, which is the least amount of space offered by any of the competitors in the compact car class. Thankfully, there are 60/40 split fold-down rear seats, which create a little cargo flexibility. Cloth seating surfaces are standard, with synthetic leather seats standard on the top XLE trim. It’s also worth noting that the rear seat has a standard pull-down center armrest with cup holders, which is not always available with base trims. Only the XLE trim has a moonroof.
Technology
The Toyota Corolla Hybrid is packed with unexpected standard tech features. Even the base LE trim has features such as an 8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights and taillights, Service and Safety Connect with a five-year trial, two front and two rear USB-C ports, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster. Connected services such as cloud-based navigation, remote start, destination assistant, and a Wi-Fi hotspot are available for a subscription fee. Other available tech features include a 10.5-inch infotainment screen, a nine-speaker JBL audio system, wireless phone charging, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
