The 2027 Toyota bZ, which was known as the bZ4X from 2023 through 2025, was the first mainstream electric vehicle from the Japanese automaker. It got off to a slow start, but was improved dramatically for the 2026 model year and continues into 2027 as a solid entry into the popular small electric crossover segment.

What’s New for the 2027 Toyota bZ
The vehicle previously known as the Toyota bZ4X received a major upgrade for the 2026 model year, bringing a new name, more power, more range, and updated styling. It also saw the addition of a North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug that made it compatible with Tesla Superchargers. After such a large overhaul, it’s no surprise that the Toyota bZ rolls into 2027 with no significant changes. The bZ remains available in XLE and Limited trim levels and with multiple powertrain options.
Design
The Toyota bZ shares most parts with the Subaru Solterra, but the two look distinct on the outside thanks to their different front-end designs and lighting signatures. The overall shape is blocky, with straight edges and bodyside creases giving the bZ an interesting look. Toyota’s hammerhead hood and LED light bar designs are shared by other models in the brand’s portfolio, and the bZ’s exterior is available with body-color or deep black fender flares and, depending on the color, a matching metallic black roof.
Powertrain
The 2027 Toyota bZ is offered with two battery capacities and a choice of front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive. Front-wheel-drive bZ models with the smaller 57.7-kWh battery are rated at up to 236 miles per charge. Adding the FWD Plus package increases battery capacity to 74.7 kWh and pushes range to between 299 and 314 miles. Toyota bZ models with AWD come standard with the larger battery and are rated at between 288 and 299 miles per charge, depending on trim level. When plugged into the right type of DC fast charger, the 2027 bZ can be charged from 10% to 80% battery capacity in around 30 minutes. The FWD bZ models are equipped with a single electric motor that produces 221 horsepower. AWD models get a second electric motor that pushes total power to 338 hp. There are steering-wheel-mounted paddles that can be used to adjust the level of regenerative braking, but there is no one-pedal driving mode as offered by many competing EVs.
Interior
A broad, flat dashboard and chunky center console are the standout elements inside the bZ. Unlike the similar Subaru Solterra that has a squared-off steering wheel, the Toyota bZ features a conventional round wheel. The bZ’s front seats are comfortable and supportive, and are heated in all bZs. The bZ Limited models also get ventilation. The rear seat is spacious for adults. Cargo space measures in at up to 27.7 cubic feet (the Limited’s subwoofer reduces space to 25.8 cubic feet), and with the rear seat folded down, it expands to 56.9 cubic feet of cargo room (or 55 cubic feet in the Limited).
Technology
A large 14-inch touchscreen dominates the bZ’s dashboard and runs the latest version of Toyota’s easy-to-use infotainment software. Thankfully, there are physical knobs for temperature and volume adjustments. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are standard, as is a pair of wireless device chargers for front-seat passengers. A second 7-inch screen serves as a digital instrument cluster. Its size, shape, and distance from the driver mean it’s sometimes difficult to see every portion of the display, and the steering wheel can also block the view. A six-speaker audio system comes standard, and a JBL premium system with nine speakers (including a subwoofer) and an amplifier is optional on Limited models.
