What’s New for the 2027 Tesla Model Y L
The Tesla Model Y L is a new addition to the Tesla lineup for the 2027 model year, though it’s really a replacement for the recently discontinued Model X. When the Model X was introduced, there weren’t any other three-row electric SUVs on the market, and Tesla had a captive customer base. With new competition and shifting public perception, Tesla cut the X loose but couldn’t fully relinquish that segment of potential buyers; hence, the Model Y long-wheelbase version, with enough space to squeeze in an additional row of seats.
Design
The six-passenger Tesla Model Y L looks enough like the familiar Model Y that buyers might not notice the differences unless they see the two side by side. The L is about six inches longer and about two inches taller, making the Model Y’s goofy proportions and profile just a little more cartoonish. It’s totally fair to wonder how it makes good business sense for Tesla to discontinue its three-row vehicle and then come up with this oddball solution, and it's because the long-wheelbase Model Y is already sold in China. It’s clear Tesla doesn’t expect this to be a big seller, hence its sole trim level, but it’s a good enough option to keep brand loyalists in the fold.
Powertrain
The Tesla Model Y L Premium Launch Series features a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain with an 83-kWh battery pack (Tesla no longer publishes horsepower specs for its vehicles). The Model Y L is rated for 325 miles of range with its standard 19-inch wheels and 320 miles with optional 20-inch wheels. Tesla claims a tow rating of up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
Interior
Yes, the standard Model Y has long been available with an optional third row, but it’s nearly useless. With a standard six-seat layout, the Model Y L has the same 41.8-inch front-row legroom as the standard Y and shaves off less than an inch of second-row space. The longer wheelbase adds 31 inches of third-row leg room and 14.2 cubic feet of additional maximum cargo space. The Launch Edition comes with all-black cloth and microsuede upholstery and trim.
Technology
Infotainment carries over from the regular-wheelbase Model Y, and includes a 16-inch touchscreen and Tesla’s native interface with Bluetooth connectivity. It’s a disorienting system for those unfamiliar with it, since it houses and controls nearly all vehicle functions. When the vehicle is parked, users have access to YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu via apps.
