What’s New for the 2026 Honda Civic Type R
Aside from a minor uptick in pricing, the Honda Civic Type R is unchanged for 2026. This version arrived for 2023 as part of the 11th-generation Civic that debuted for the 2022 model year. The Civic Type R first arrived in the U.S. for the 2020 model year.
Design
Honda offers the Civic in sedan and hatchback body styles, and the Civic Type R is based on the latter. It has an extroverted design that’s actually toned down from the last generation. The most notable element is the huge rear spoiler, but the sporty look is also enhanced by a large front lower air intake that looks almost like an exposed radiator, black 19-inch wheels, a hood vent, lower side skirts, and triple exhaust tips that exit in the center of a black rear diffuser.
Powertrain
The Civic Type R is fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It’s backed exclusively by a six-speed manual transmission that sends the power to the front wheels; there's no all-wheel drive here. Fuel economy is decent for a powerful car, with EPA ratings of 22/28/24 mpg.
Interior
The Civic Type R has a predictably sporty interior highlighted by thickly bolstered front sport seats upholstered in red synthetic suede. The rear seat is configured for two rather than three, so the Type R seats four instead of five like other Civics. It also has metal sport pedals, dual-zone automatic climate control, and red ambient lighting. Its hatchback body style means the Civic Type R is quite practical; it has 24.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, which fold in a 60/40 split to open more room, but Honda doesn’t provide a measurement with the rear seats down.
Technology
The Type R comes with the Civic’s top tech features, including a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Also standard are navigation with real-time traffic information, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, a wireless phone charger, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.
