This car has saved my life back in 2007 I hit a concrete barrier head on at 67 miles and hour trying to avoid a deer. The air bags deployed and even the car started up after three trys of the key turn after pushing the engine block back six inches I am currently trying to find another one even if its a project car. Mine happened in 1998 model I recommend the 1996-1999 Taurus any day as a first car. Oct 31, 2023

I've owned 3 Taurus's. A 96, 99 and 2005. I'm very familiar with these cars.
With both my 96 and 99 Taurus's, I had some EGR issues. There's a known defect with the EGR valve that often triggers the check engine light. The issue is caused by some EGR tubes that easily plug up or crack. It's a minor problem that never affects the drivability of the car. I tried to fix it a few times to no avail. But since the performance of the car isn't impacted, I just left it alone.
Spray the door latches with WD40. There are door sensors which often malfunction, causing the computer to think the doors are ajar. WD40 applied liberally to both latches will guarantee this problem is fixed.
Tie rods seem to wear out every 20k-25k miles, but they're easy and cheap to replace.
The headlights aren't very bright, even with the Silverstar Ulta's I put in. This was my biggest complaint about the car. There were many nights I'd be driving and felt like the low beams provided no illumination.
I had over 230k miles on my 96 Taurus before it died, so when I decided to replace it, I thought I'd buy a 1999 model. I purchased one in 2007 with only 37k miles on it.
Gas mileage in this car is adequate for a car built in the late 90's. At freeways speeds you'll easily be able to achieve 25-27mpg, but city mileage is as advertised, at about 20-21mpg. Engine power is adequate, but not exceptional. Don't believe anyone who says this car is fast. 200hp is modest, but you're not buying the car for speed anyway.
I never had any major mechanical problems with my 99 Taurus. I replaced ball joints shortly after I bought it, but that's because I purchased it from an old lady who let the car sit for months without driving it. I also replaced about 2-3 tie rods over a period of 3-4 years. The engine and transmission never gave me any problems.
I owned this car from 2007 until late 2012. It had about 115k miles on it when I sold it and It still ran like new. If it weren't for the fact that I moved 2000 miles, I'd have kept it, but I had no way to move it, as this was my second car.

The Ford Taurus SHO has great acceleration, braking power and a fun car to drive. This a durable car and I have not had to do many repairs. The car in my opinion does not handle as well as I would like. Aug 13, 2013

1998 Ford Taurus wagon has been very good to me. Last 3 cars have been Taurus and this the first wagon. Cargo area is great with lots of space and extra seating if needed. Travel about 60 Miles a day expressway miles so pretty good on gas about 23 highway per gallon.Aug 09, 2013

If you ever read consumer reports back in the 90's you would see bad reviews
on american made cars. Things like reliability in the bad or worst. This is
different, this is a ford and during those 90's there was a sedan that could
handle a family road trip
The length of the car is about sedan sized, but the difference is it is a little
wider, and longer to boot. That means the turning arc is more of a diagonal
slice then a curve going forward as the car rear of the car does not rotate as
much. In congested parking situations you need the whole width of
the traffic lane before turning. The back may be clear but the front can still hit
the car that is perpendicular to your space.
Worry about the other car more cause a small scratch leaves only bits of paint
and a tiny fixable deformation, the other newer car gets dented and all
scratched up while costing more, hmmm....
Gas mileage is the same as the 90's and 2000's, it is the same in any 3.0 liter six
cylinder ,and the funny thing is the gas tank is the same size as any other
newer car and still gets the same mileage or can cruse at 65MPH only at 2k
RPM's
I think of the car as more of a cruiser then a sedan, but the benefits is it is a
cruiser with sedan engine performance. As if people make six seat capacity
sedans anymore
There are drainage holes under the truck carpet to drain the trunk if any water
got in the trunk, which it did. So fear not future classic collectors, Ford thought
of everything.Jan 25, 2012

Good overall car. Weak point is the heater core.... Tends to clog and EXPENSIVE
to replace. Great car! Great gas mileage and comfy to drive/ride. Had a tad more
front end wear after 12 years, but still a good value! Looks good and drives good.Dec 03, 2011

Great car, weak tranny, but i would get another in a heart beat, hard a lot of cargo room, cost on mine was low, very comfy front seats. Drove the hell out of that car and it hauled ass. I would have another anyday of the weekOct 19, 2011

this car is a BEAST on the road, a straight sleeper, this thing pulls very hard, from any speed, obviously the transmission is a very week point, but other than that, its a boss, its big, but not too big. overall, a nice carJul 20, 2010

I built this car from the ground up in 2 weeks. I stripped the wagon down to the bare shell, then swapped in everything from my 96 Smashed SHO sedan including full wiring harness and dash. Then I had one of 2 SHO wagons registered in America and Canada. Fun and awesome car that could hall around 7 people. This car rode like it was on rails with SARC struts on the front and H&R springs. It also had 17 x 8 Mille Miglia M11 rims with 245/45/17 rubber. It was a complete SHO in a wagon body so it was a total sleeper. This pic was from the All Ford show that it was entered in. Good power, excellent handling, roomy. Very dependable for an affordable daily driver. Mileage is fair, overall quality is typical for american cars of its day. Can be suprising on open roads, is faster than it looks. Oval body lines are a love it or leave it thing, you either like it or not.Jan 25, 2010

Well it is a great family car that gets relatively good gas mileage but it has the turning radius of a whale. It has a ver spacious interior with great air conditioning. I gotta say this thing is durable its been wrecked 3 times and a tree bent it in half and its still running.Sep 23, 2009

I love the car because it handles very well for a 4 door heavy sedan and it gets great gas milege while doing so. it also is ultra comfortable and gets off the line for how big it is. not to mention blacked out it looks rather sleek Jun 26, 2009

made from quality materials, but isn't put together the best. styling is controversial at best, and power is somewhat disappointing for a 32 valve V8. Handling and braking is better than a regular taurus but it could still use improvement.May 29, 2009

It was my old car. The performance was stellar! The body quality was amazing! It was purple. What more could I say about my baby? It was awesome to drive and I want it back because my GRand Am that I currently own...sucks!Feb 27, 2009

The performance is what you'd expect for a car of the
type. It's got almost 250000 on the original engine and
transmission and it runs like a dream! It's a very
comfortable and affordable car. I get almost 30 MPG on
the 3.0L V6. Long live pushrod V6 engines!Feb 24, 2009

reliable family car, that still runs. The worst part is having to replace the heater core, it's in the dash. Not a job for rookie like me. Good on gas and roomy enough for a family of three. The v6 is a good engine.Dec 09, 2008

It's my first car, so she's my baby. For being 12 years old, she runs great. No big problems have arisen, and it gets great gas mileage. Maintenance is basic oil changes and checking tire pressure. I don't have to keep tabs on it. I love driving it. It's all purple leather interior, and it's gorgeous. The people before me took great care of her.Oct 09, 2008

Not a great car, but not a bad car either. Roomy, lots of cargo space, and quick enough to get around, but nothing sporty or fun like a real sports car. Take care of it and the engine will go farther than your average compact, but you'll end up replacing a lot of suspension parts and maybe a transmission. If your going to get a Taurus, a SHO is recommended for the sport driver out there, but for engine reliability the standard pushrod Vulcan V6 is best. The Duratech V6 is a good choice for those who want the same from the standard model but with more power.Sep 15, 2008

This is a great family car, lots of room. I bought so that I would be able to have room for my son. The car has all leather, 6 disc changer in the trunk, sunroof, all the bells and whistles. It has pretty good performance, considering the weight of the car. Sep 10, 2008

I believe the newer Taurus are more sleek and stylish... I would actually consider getting one of those. Henry was a great car who got me through high school and college. :)Mar 02, 2008
