I actually have a had a couple of these Explorers like this and they are tanks I turned one into a monster 4x4 and thats all I did with it. This one however is the Eddie Bauer which has everything including moonroof and everything still works which is very surprising for a vehicle that is 24 years old. Im not really impressed with the powertrain I dont like the automatic tranny with the 4.0 it kills your power to the wheels. But overall a great truck would recommend to anyone.Dec 11, 2014

For a small vehicle it handles great off-road and going into the mountains. It is good at taking corners and going high speeds quickly. The brakes work exceptionally well. It's a fun little vehicle to drive and I would recommend this car to someone who likes driving off-road.Aug 02, 2014

My Beast has been a good work SUV it is a 1993 and except for a few minor things that didn't cost me much to fix it is an awesome vehicle. Don't know how this years Explorer's have been rated but I rate The Beast EXCELLENT Oct 27, 2013

It's easy to park, paint is strong. People compliment me on the seats being confortable. Plently of ash trays front and back. Plently of people want to ride in it always. Everything on this truck works, really reliable and great vehicle.Jan 14, 2013

Nice riding truck looked great, Tons of cargo space when you folded down the backseats
just loved the overall look and sportyness of the 2 door backed up with the 5 speed manual tranny, The only downside to the truck was a design flaw with the 5 speed tranny that caused the demise of the transmission from leakin fluid while driving,, but not when parked.......Dec 05, 2011

Vehicle has great acceleration, braking, handling, and ground clearance. Have had some minor repairs done (Water pump, Clutch, and Head Gaskets) but should be expected since vehicle has over 200,000 miles on it. Still has original interior with exception of divers seat (Replaced only do to seat back broke). Very reasonable cost of ownership. Very fun to drive on and off the road.Oct 30, 2011

This SUV has lasted well past its sell-by date, but I have kept it for the reason to
restore it and make it an off-road brute thats ready to tackle the trail. You can give
the SUV quite a beating and expect it to start right back up the next day without
too much problem. The styling on this SUV screams take me off road so i can get
dirty. The car looks way better covered in mud and dirt than clean and fresh. You
can not have fun in this SUV if you keep it on the road at all times.Jan 27, 2011

Most bullet proof rig ever.. 200,000+ miles on the original, factory transmission
and motor.
Never had anything major go wrong. Most extensive stuff i have done is a
transfer case, starter, spark plugs, and alternator.
The 4X4 is almost unstoppable, I have never gotten stuck in any terrain, and
that includes going to work in January of '09 with that 70+ inches of snow on
the ground.. The Explorer plowed right through it all the way up Sunset Hill and
down Geiger Rd.
If you have a 1st generation Ford Explorer (1991-1994), the only things you
will have to worry about is changing the fluids and brakes. The brakes wear
rather quick on these is the only downfall.. But just don't ride your brakes like a
Grandma and you won't have that problem to frequently!!
The 4.0 Cologne V6 motor still has a lot of balls left for having 200,000 miles on
it. Once the motor goes out (if it does) ill be rebuilding it to go another several
100,000 miles!!Sep 09, 2010

This SUV is a fun drive with a five speed manual tranny. Handles good even when lifted. tight turning radius. Built well and looks beafy, fairly cheap to drive and repair. Gas mileage could have been better but with a 4L V6 and lifted sitting on over sized tires you cant be too picky. Sep 04, 2010

I love this SUV. unfortunately It finally gave up the ghost at over 375,000 miles on it with no major work done on it other than a rebuilt transmission. It was always a blast to drive around town with my friends in tow. i would highly recommend this or any Ford truck to a friendSep 02, 2010

great truck built great strong running 4.0 v6. with stock tires this thing flew eveyone is surprised how quick it is and have done over 110 in it. this thing is a blast off road and has more potential with a lift and lockers and is a big off road following with these babies. it was the best 200 bucks i have ever spent Aug 07, 2010

Lots of space
Decent mileage for a damn near 20 year old truck
A bit slow, but that's compared to brand new cars
Sorta ugly, but that's compared to new cars- and is subject to opinion. SOme people like the utilitarian look...
Is an unstoppable force of nature
Can't beat the priceJan 25, 2010

I absolutely love my 94 Ford Explorer. It's 16 years old and the only thing, other than routine maintenance, that I have had to do to it was to replace the cheesy fiber lower intake manifold gasket, as it was leaking coolant. Do yourself a favor and use the metal one that Ford now offers. Although the 1st generation Explorer's have all the aerodynamics of a shoebox, Ford did a great job of blending style and function, with this rugged little utilitarian vehicle. It gets around in the snow like nobody's business, and has towed a good many sub compacts (and a few full sized 4X4s) out of assorted snowbanks. I was leery about "pushbutton" 4 wheel drive (never had one before), but I'm a fan now. She starts to spin a little, just push the button, 4X4 engages and off you go. She's not once left me sit. Take care of it, and it'll take care of you. I do, however, wish that the engine had a bit more power, but that's the only thing that I'd change about this well built, rugged and durable piece of equipment.

Good looking but a piece of crap from the beginning. Always
breaking down, horrible gas mileage, a pain to fix. Was not
worth the money paid for it. Great to beat on and destroy
though. Almost blew it up on accident and holds a lot of
people.Dec 22, 2009

I like that is has plenty of space and is comfortable. It is very nice with a 6 cylinder engine. Only thing is the fuel enconomy. It gets 15 city 18 hwy. Not bad for an old car like that!Sep 30, 2009

It was a fine automobile. My grandfather bought it brand new in 1990, he gave it to me when I graduated in 2001. In February of this year, I bought myself a new car and gave the old Explorer to my dad, and am happy to report to this day it is still running strong.Sep 28, 2009

Mean Machine for long trips. Made it in no time from Wash DC to Orlando, overnight, fully loaded. Cost effective to maintain and operate. Loved the manual transmission! Very spacious. Super cold AC. Awesome turning radius. I would buy one again!May 14, 2009

this model is a 4 liter and it is good on fuel economy has enough power for any task without being a v8.the explorer is built ford tough and they mean it. it will take a lot of punishment and still drive smooth.since owning this vehicle the repairs have been minor except the water pump and replacing the fuel tank which means dropping the fuel cell(tank).the water pump requires removal of the radiator which isnt all that difficult just time consuming. the only thing i dont like about ford is that you require special tools for automatic 4 wheel hub removal.FORD ROCKS,CHEVY WALKS!!!!!!!Apr 01, 2009

I bought this car in 1997 with just under 70,000 miles on it. I planned for it to be a 5-6 year run before buying another. After 9 years, this is still a great car. I consider replacing it every year, but it's low cost of operation and very few repairs (and minor ones at that) have been excellent. Now, with over 215,000 miles, it runs almost as well as it did at 70,000. Dec 02, 2008

A good truck for it's time. Lacks a little in power with the 4.0, but it gets you where you need to go. Can tow up to 5,000 pounds... so I've heard. Rides very smooth over rough terrain as well.
The limited model is the best trim level by far! Incredible stereo system for being stock! Very comfortable seats... as far as the driver's seat anyway.
It's looks are second to none. All of Ford's limited explorers look good, regardless of the year!Aug 14, 2008

I loved this truck, solid off road and in the snow. plus the gas mileage was great for an suv with about 20 mpg average. I had 212,000 miles on this vehicle before i sold it and never had a problem with it, ford really knows how to build trucks and i can careless what anybody says about ford, i think their vehicles are unstoppable.Aug 01, 2008

It may have a lower MPG rating than that of a sedan, but on the highway or in town it gets an amazing amount of gas for the mileage.Jul 03, 2008

I bought the 1991 Ford Explore as my first vehicle. Only paid under $1,000 for it and it runs like a dream. I was lucky to find it with less than 16,000 miles on it. Being parked for 6 years it had a few dents and needed a paint job. So far I have had no complaints. I have had no engine issues or even transmission issues.Jun 18, 2008

Mine was on the ropes when I got it, but while it lasted, I loved the thing. It was great for trips with multiple people, rode surprisingly quietly considering its tires and drivetrain. Most of these will go 200,000 miles, which mine did. Apr 02, 2008

This SUV I think is one of the most widely known and respected SUV out there. It's the nicest little vehicle I have had, it pretty good on gas and is a breeze to get around with. They are fairly modifiable too. Jan 21, 2008

Full size SUV, second year Explorer was built was '92, meant by ford to replace the Bronco. While Explorers have a rust problem, mine has little to none because of a lifetime warranty that we got through Zebart. Because of the Explorer's rust problems, they no longer offer life though, only ten years. Excellent acceleration for its size, good handling, and excellent braking. Not a bad looking vehicle either. Can take LOADS of abuse, being the only major problem is weak/poorly designed transmission and rust problems glore. Still runs like a dream after 115,000 miles. V6 should not have been offered as an engine though, but thats just my thoughts.Jan 21, 2008

Not meant to last. Engineered from a car chasis. Consequently, ride is preferred over off-road performance. It's really just a big grocery getter. Not bad for caryying a lot of friends. Mine was dark teal, introducing me to my favorite color. Tha Limited options were satisfactory, but nothing special. Jan 14, 2008

This car has shown that a car can only get better with age, as it never struggles with reaching the 6000rpm mark. I consistently out accelerate other cars, all the while the brakes and suspension handle remarkably at high speeds, considering this is a SUV after all. The outside of the car is still beautiful, even with all of the scrapes and dents from almost 13 years on the road. What's even more remarkable is that the thing had gone through one wreck, that I know of ( it was bought used). With simple upkeep it has gone relatively unscathed. The engine/transmission combo is superb, especially for a V6/automatic. This fact only magnifies the incredible engineering that Ford put into it. The interior is inline with its contemporaries and is very comfortable, especially considering its age. Nov 17, 2007

I've gone through several vehicles in my 35 years and the only vehicle that has proved to be reliable is my 1991 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4. No matter how abused or wrecked...it always manages to get me home. I LOVE THIS VEHICLE!!!Jun 23, 2007
