I really enjoy the Suburban/Yukon platform. The only complaint is the instrument cluster. They have a decently high failure rate. Once theyre properly rebuilt, they will last for years and years. The front ends of the 4X4 models have to be greased at every oil change. But even greasing them all of the time will not prevent failure. Ball joint failure and Pitman arm/idler arm failure is fairly common. Greasing the front steering components will help offset premature failure. Pther than that, great vehiclesFeb 11, 2022

This vehicle checks many boxes. Safe, substantial room for passengers, great cargo area, standard towing package, many convenience items that are easily upgraded. Generally sold as a 4x4 in the northeast. Good in the snow. Good performance, with above average power. This is a relatively heavy vehicle that crushes the pavement, very comfortable to drive or ride. Overall I rate this GM chassis as one of the best ever!
The cons........This vehicle can develop a valve slap on the 5.3 liter. Front end usually need substantial work completed and can be costly. The most consistent oversight for this design is rust. The rockers rust out frequently along with the brake lines. Always inspect the frame for similar problems.
The extended chassis is a better buy. You can fit many passenger in the short wheelbase Tahoe or Yukon design but you sacrifice the ability to haul any cargo. In addition, Chevy failed to offer a 6 liter option to my knowledge versus the GMC Denali models.
I rate this vehicle a 4.7 out of 5. Dec 30, 2021

Very satisfied with the vehicle. It’s 20 years old and has lower than average mileage. The sales price was $1000 less than the high retail listed by Carfax.Aug 02, 2021

Reliable American Power and Durability that lasts forever. Room for 8, Power to spare. Tried the smaller SUVs and returned to the Cowboy Cadillac. My wife and 6 kids love it. LOVE. I have 3 friends who drove their Suburbans forever and the two who got rid of theirs now wished they hadn't.May 08, 2015

This is a beautiful SUV. There is tons of room, and the drive is amazing. Equipped with leather seats makes this vehicle absolutely a pleasure to drive, especially on long rad trips. The sound system is BOSE and rocks. Additionally, this vehicle can haul just about anything you want to throw behind it. Loved it.Mar 19, 2015

This generation Suburban has so much more interior style than the 2007 and newer. The latest gen interior seats are flat and look modern but after 500 miles on the highway, your back and rear end will tell you that the previous generation is the cats meow. Power and economy is good for a large SUV and is better than Toyota and Ford in this class vehicle. These trucks stay reliable for 200-300K miles and more if maintained well. The Chevy 5.3L V8 has proven to be the leader in reliability of the V8 truck engines.Feb 22, 2015

You just could not ask for better!
It handles and rides like a dream. Incredibly comfortable and wonderful to drive.
It can pull heavy loads without a problem or you even noticing the load is back there (I have hauled loads of cedar logs on my 18' trailer so big that you couldn't see my third break light and she didn't even act like the load was there).
When you remove the third row seat (which is my ONLY gripe, you have to remove 3rd row to be able to have flat surface for hauling things inside it) you can haul a lot of things. I recently bought a used 65" flat screen TV (so no box) that had a stand and it all fit in the back with room to spare (did have to tilt the TV to get it through the back, but it stood up right after that.
The turning radius for such a large vehicle is amazing, it's better than my little GMC Jimmy.
I actually get 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on highway, of course your mpg is going to depend on several factors ... your driving style, terrain, and weather you use 100% gas or Ethanol. I only use 100% gas in mine. If I am traveling through a state that does not offer 100% I use Lucas fuel treatment and that balances out the gas and I retain the same mpg as with pure gas.
Mine is now 11 years old with over 195000 miles on it and the most expensive (and only repair other than regular maintenance) thing I have had to replace/ fix is the A/C evaporator core under the dash.
The only cosmetic indicator of her age and miles is the front leather seats that have some wrinkles and a couple tears.
The paint still looks like new even though it get's a bath at a full service car wash at LEAST once a week. Jan 25, 2015

This 2003 Chevrolet Suburban LT has room to spare and power to spare. The DVD makes road trips easier on the driver. Leather seats make clean up of spills very easy. The factory sunroof is a plus. The rear air condition helps keep every one cool even all the way in the back.Aug 11, 2014

Love this vehicle and mechanics tell me since I've changed the oil religiously, it should run for another 250,000 miles. Overall you cannot beat this car for value and reliability. Great tow vehicle and family vacation vehicle. I will buy another Suburban someday.Jul 15, 2014

Very comfortable, smooth ride. Handled very well. Safe vehicle. Great for family. Better fuel economy is always desired, but considering the size vehicle, and its performance, it dit really good. All Wheel Drive transmission not as desirable as four wheel drive, considering fuel economy, but when calculated, it wasn't too much under.May 13, 2014

We have owned this vehicle since new and it is the third one we have owned and it is the greatest vehicle for a large family that likes to camp and ski and the like. Safe vehicle with good visibility and creature comforts.Oct 09, 2013

Orignal owner, I love everything about this car. The only draw back is the gas mileage. My family is grown now and we don't need all that room, 90% of the time its just me in the car. The leather seats have always been so comfortable and soft. The auto 4-wheel drive is wonderful, never had any trouble in the snow! (Ever) The repairs have been average, brakes, tires, transmission, just normal wear and tear. I have always taken very good care of my vehicles, very faithful with the oil changes. It is a big car the acceleration is adequate but once your on 70 mph it just glides. Heated front seats, 4x4, ac, cd, onstar, pw/pb/tow package/ running boards/custom wheels, new tires 10/12.Mar 29, 2013

We have way more likes than dislikes. We now have over 130,000 miles on this vehicle and it is 10 years old. The Chevy Suburban looks great and the paint has held up very well. The interior is very comfortable and durable. The only issue on the interior is the paint on the radio buttons has scratched off (believe from my wife's finger nails). The only odd noise that you can hear is a little whistle from the ONSTAR antenna (believe this has been fixed on newer models). Was not in the shop much. Replaced the water pump and steering pump myself around 80,000 miles. Replaced the left front wheel hub myself around 110,000 miles due to the speed sensor. Did the first tune-up around 120,000 miles. Overall a great vehicle!Mar 11, 2013

Love the space, huge cargo, captains chairs are heated and very comfy. DVD keeps everyone entertained on long trips, kids can sleep in the back at the lake. Accelerates nicely even when towing, a real workhorse. Very reliable and has held up like a champ.Jan 16, 2013

I bought the 2001 Suburban used as a road trip car. Perfect choice for this purpose. It has more room than most families of 4 could conceivably use but comes in handy for the times when you need suitcases, dogs, and whatever else. Gas is expensive but no surprise there.Nov 13, 2012

Nothing short of an outstanding ride. Luxurious, powerful, lots of cargo space and towing power. Acceleration and braking were above average with this vehicle's size, demonstrated great ease of control even at higher speeds. We loved owning this car and are only parting with it due to a recent purchase of a 2012 suburban. Excellent SUV!Aug 29, 2012

Years ago I owned a mini-van, what the guys from Car Talk called the "wussification of the American male." Never again! Then came along the Suburban. Thank you Chevy! A nice reliable full size family vehicle that gets decent gas mileage (comparatively) and fits my family in style and comfort. Apr 23, 2012

Our 2001 has been super reliable. We have taken several long trips and this is a comfortable ride. We have also used the truck extensively to ferry all type of building and garden supplies. Always seems to have enough room. Our Suburban has just turned 191,000 miles and still running strong. No fluid leaks or transmission problems.Sep 19, 2011

Performance - its a large SUV, it handles like a large SUV.
Build Quality - overall decent, but the daytime running lights have been
replace about 8 times, fog lights twice, gas gauge and sensor unreliable
below 1/3 tank.
Appearance - decent
Cost of Ownership - normal maintenance.
Fun Factor - decent off road manners.Apr 04, 2011

My Z71 Suburban is an absolute beast in the snow and is the perfect vehicle for family travel no matter what the event. Spacious interior to sprawl out in, but yet a smooth suspension that will have you feeling like your driving a Caddy!!Nov 08, 2010

This vehicle was no slouch it had a 5.3 litre vortec engine under the hood which is capable of bringing this beast from a standing start to highway speed in no time at all. the brakes were very responsive and did a good job in bringing this heavy truck to a quick stop, although a little thirsty and i believe that to be the all wheel drive and its weight factor, it more than made up for in practacality. The interior was very well thought out with controls easy to use and the seats were very comfortable for long trips which i often made and sometimes just for the pleasure of driving it. Being an older vehicle it did have its fair share of repair cost but if you can keep up with the maintenance its well worth the experience.Dec 18, 2008
