Wagons have never been Americans’ first choice in family vehicle, but Volvo has managed to pull off a long run on the US market with wagons in tow the entire time. The Swedish automaker still sells long-roofs here, and its newest models are quite impressive.
What’s New for the 2024 Volvo V90
The V90 Cross Country is an excellent but expensive family hauler with all-wheel drive (AWD) and great space. It enters 2024 unchanged.
Design
Volvo isn’t making the brick-shaped wagons of days gone by, and its latest designs offer sleek lines and refined shapes. The V90 features an elevated ride height and plenty of black plastic cladding to make sure everyone knows it can do things that don’t involve pavement. Volvo doesn’t clutter the exterior with badges and logos, and the car’s range of subdued color choices gives it a pleasing, calming curb presence.
Powertrain
Volvo gives the V90 Cross Country a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The combined output is 295 horsepower, enabling a just-over-six-second zero-60-mph time. Though very clearly tuned for comfort and stability over all-out performance, the V90 is capable of holding its own on curvy backroads. The steering is overly assisted and the brake pedal is a bit soft at times, but the car feels confident and planted in most situations.
Interior
Volvo’s interiors are among the best for luxury and visual appeal, and the V90 is no exception. It offers open-pore wood trim, metal accents, and plenty of leather. The five-seater has generous space for people, but it falls short on cargo room compared to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain wagon. It’s also less spacious for cargo than the Subaru Outback, a much less expensive wagon from a mainstream automaker.
Technology
Volvo equips a 9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The automaker’s software now includes Google built-in, brining maps, voice assistance, and more. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and Bluetooth.
Safety
Volvo’s cars are among the safest on the road, and the V90 gets a load of standard driver aids to back up that claim. It comes standard with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alerts, lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, parking sensors, and more. The car earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2022, but it hasn’t been subjected to the more stringent side-crash rules the organization implemented for 2023.
Pricing
Volvo offers two configurations of the V90 for 2024. The base Plus trim starts at just over $60,000, while the Ultimate trim level starts at just under $66,000. Other than color choices, there aren’t options to drive up the price, making the V90 a decent value, despite the expense.
