The Volvo V90 is an upscale station wagon that competes against vehicles like Volvo’s own V60, as well as the Audi A4 and A6 Allroads and the Subaru Outback. ## What’s New for the 2023 Volvo V90 The Volvo V90 is a great pick for a station wagon, and for 2023, Volvo expands the trim lineup from one to two models for added appeal. The V90 was an all-new model for 2018, and in the years since, it has seen only minor changes, including revised styling for 2021 and a new mild-hybrid system for 2022. ## Design The Volvo V90 exemplifies the brand’s sophisticated-yet-simple styling. The current station wagon segment trends upscale, and the V90 is no different. It comes standard with LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and sturdy-looking yet elegant 19-inch alloy wheels. Colors range from dull to duller, but that’s just a sign of the times. Options like an adaptive air suspension system and 20-inch wheels give this endearing family hauler more style and substance. ## Powertrain Both trim levels of the 2023 Volvo V90 come with the same powertrain, a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine with a mild-hybrid system, good for a combined output of 295 horsepower. The V90 comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD). The mild-hybrid system is more for performance than fuel economy, resulting in about-average EPA ratings of 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. Properly equipped, the 2023 Volvo V90 can tow up to 3,500 lbs. ## Interior The Volvo V90 features a functional yet upscale cabin that transports five passengers in comfort. Standard features include a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, leather upholstery, power-adjustable and heated front seats, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10-speaker audio system, and quad-zone automatic climate control. Options include ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, premium Nappa leather upholstery, massaging front seats, passenger seat memory settings, a hands-free power liftgate, and several options for audio upgrades. The V90’s cargo area can hold 19.8 cubic feet of gear, with a total of 69 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down. ## Technology Volvo equips every V90 with a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touch-screen infotainment display, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging, and a 10-speaker audio system. Premium 14- and 19-speaker sound systems are available. Volvo’s infotainment system runs on a Google-based platform, and it’s generally quick and user-friendly, though there are few physical controls for features like climate control. ## Safety The 2023 Volvo V90 earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ rating, and top Good scores in all six crash tests. The Volvo V90 has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Volvo equips every V90 with a reversing camera, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, driver-alertness monitoring, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high-beam headlights. Options include a surround-view camera system and a head-up display. ## Pricing As of this writing, Volvo lists pricing at an MSRP of $58,450 for the base Plus trim and $64,050 for the Ultimate trim. The Plus model is available with a couple of different configurations of Climate packages for about $750, which can add heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, headlight cleaners, and built-in child booster seats. A 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo costs $800. The Ultimate trim is available with an adaptive air suspension system for $1,200 and a Bowers & Wilkins stereo for $3,200.
