FAQs
Volvo added the V90 to its lineup for 2017. In 2020, this well-rounded package carries over almost completely unchanged. It competes against the likes of the Subaru Outback and Volvo’s own V60.
V90 shoppers have the choice of the base V90, a regular stylish wagon, and the Cross Country trim, which benefits from a 2.3-inch lift, contrasting body cladding, and standard all-wheel drive (AWD).
Then, buyers can choose between two engine options. The first, the T5, features a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder setup rated for 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The second, the T6, features a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged inline 4-cylinder setup that makes 310 hp, which is a slight dip from 2019’s 316-hp rating, and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both come with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the choice of front-wheel drive (FWD) or AWD, and feature standard selectable drive-mode settings. The FWD T5 engine gets the best fuel economy of the group, with ratings of 23 mpg city, 35 highway, and 27 combined.
Next, it’s time to choose a trim level. Volvo hasn’t yet revealed specific trim levels for 2020, but if they carry over unchanged, we’ll see the sporty R-Design and upscale Inscription for the base V90. Regardless of trim, you’ll get 19-inch wheels, LED lighting, roof rails, a panoramic sunroof, and keyless entry. The base Cross Country is equipped similar to the standard V90, and the Cross Country Ocean Race trim gets nautical-themed styling elements and minor upgrades over the regular Cross Country.
The Volvo V90 gets a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display that features a split screen option, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, navigation, and a 10-speaker audio system. Options include a rear-row entertainment system and a 19-speaker premium audio system.
The Volvo V90 has not been rated by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), though it offers up the advanced safety features that are a key part of the brand’s reputation. The V90 includes rain-sensing windshield wipers, a reversing camera, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with a semi-autonomous feature, blind-spot monitoring, rear-collision mitigation, rear parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alerts.
Crossovers are useful, but they’re far from the only option for functional and stylish family transport. Wagons may be making a comeback, and the Volvo V90 is a solid option.
