Polestar is a relatively new brand of electric and gasoline-electric hybrid models, brought to you by the same team that’s responsible for the latest Volvo cars. Its first car, the 1, is a plug-in hybrid performance 2+2 coupe, limited to just 150 examples each year. Its debut was the 2020 model year, so it goes unchanged for 2021.
The 1’s powertrain is fairly complicated, comprising a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and electric motor that route 375 horsepower to the front axle. Two more motors send an additional 114 hp to the rear wheels, and total system measurements are 619 hp and 738 pound-feet of torque.
The 1 boasts both hybrid and electric modes, adjustable dampers, a torque-vectoring rear differential, and Akebono brakes. All of that gets you a zero to 60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. On the fuel-economy front, buyers get 52 miles of electric range, 470 miles of total range, 58 MPGe in hybrid mode, and 26 mpg in gasoline mode (using premium fuel). A 50-kilowatt DC fast charger will take the 1’s batteries from 0 to 80% in under an hour.
Polestar offers the 1 in a single trim, with only colors as options. Standard features include LED exterior lights, two full-size front seats, two occasional-use rear seats, leather upholstery, front fog lights with cornering, full-power seats, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, power-folding exterior mirrors, wireless phone charging, an active rear spoiler, and Digital Key, which lets you use your smartphone to access and start the 1.
The 1 is no slouch when it comes to standard safety features, which comprise forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, semi-autonomous driving, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front- and rear park assist, and a 360-degree camera system. Like most exotic models, the 1 has not been crash-tested by any outside agency.
The Polestar 1 is a hyper-exclusive and ultra-efficient grand touring coupe.
