In the world of Honda enthusiasts, few words generate more buzz and passion than “Civic Type R.” And while the performance car was hot enough as it was, for 2021, Honda takes things a step further with a new race-focused version.
While the Civic family offers sedan, coupe, and hatchback body styles, all Type R variants are hatchbacks. The Civic Type R distinguishes itself right away with giant front intakes, red badging, a set of two rear spoilers, a triple-outlet exhaust setup, and a sharp-edged body kit. Inside, red racing seats coddle the front occupants, while unique badging and red accents throughout remind you that this is no ordinary Civic. Each one also gets a serial number plate just behind the gear selector.
The heart of the Civic Type R is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that pumps out an amazing 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Not long ago, those were numbers for engines twice as large. It sends all of that power to just the front wheels, unlike similar rally-style cars. Your only transmission interface is a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission, replete with rev-match control. Honda also includes three driving modes—Comfort, Normal, and Sport—a limited-slip differential, and adaptive dampers. Even with all that, the Civic Type R still gets decent fuel economy at 22 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 combined, albeit using premium fuel.
The big news, though, is the addition of a Civic Type R Limited Edition. Constrained to just 600 units, this special variant comes dressed in a vivid Phoenix Yellow paint job. The goal here is weight savings, so Honda shaved crucial pounds by moving to BBS forged aluminum wheels and removing the rear heating ducts, tonneau cover, wiper blade, and noise insulation materials. At this time, full specifications aren’t yet available for the Limited Edition variant.
Standard features for all Civic Type Rs include 20-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, a 7-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a 540-watt audio system with 12 speakers and a subwoofer, dual-zone automatic climate control, navigation, an aluminum shift knob, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, and a performance data logger. There are no options apart from exterior color.
Like all Hondas, the Civic Type R comes with the Honda Sensing suite of safety technologies. That gets you forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and road-departure mitigation. The non-performance Civic Hatchback was evaluated in 2020 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), where it earned a Top Safety Pick designation.
The Civic Type R is the pinnacle of Honda’s performance engineering, and it's a formidable car. The upcoming Limited Edition variant should take that a step further.
