After all these years, the A8 remains Audi’s flagship sedan, and recently the automaker has made strides to improve both fuel economy and performance with a plug-in hybrid model. The car produces sports-car levels of power while retaining the high-luxury feeling that the A8 is known for.
The A8 plug-in hybrid is powered by a six-cylinder engine and electric motor that combine to produce 443 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) are standard. Audi says the A8 Hybrid Plug-In's powertrain is potent enough to move the heavy vehicle from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.
The car’s interior is both upscale and tech-forward, with standard features such as Veletta leather upholstery, a power panoramic sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, LED interior lighting, a Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, dark brown walnut wood trim, and more.
On the tech front, Audi equips every A8 plug-in model with a 10.1-inch infotainment display, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging with signal booster, a 360-degree camera system, and the Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster.
The 2021 Audi A8 hasn’t been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but the car does get a decent list of standard driver aids. They include lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, automatic high-beam headlights, LED exterior lighting with dynamic turn signals, and an advanced airbag system.
The 2021 Audi A8 L is on sale now. The base car is priced at $87,545, which includes a mandatory $1,045 destination charge. The A8 60 TFSI e Plug-In Hybrid starts at $96,945 after destination.
Audi offers several add-ons that can drive that price skyward, such as an Executive Plus package. The $5,000 package brings a load of additional safety features that include adaptive cruise control with traffic jam and turn assist, active lane assist, a side assist pre-collision system, a head-up display (HUD), traffic-sign recognition, intersection assist, and more. It also adds several luxury features, such as front-seat massage, acoustic glass, heated rear seats, heated armrests, and LED ambient interior lighting.
