Of the many versions of the Ford Mustang, the Shelby GT350 is the one most at home on the track. It first arrived as a 2016 model and saw noteworthy improvements in 2019. This year, 2020, is the Shelby GT350’s final one on the market.
The Shelby GT350 comes in Base and R trims. Either one gets you a 5.2-liter flat-plane-crank V8 packed with 526 horsepower, 429 pound-feet of torque, and an 8,250-rpm redline. As a proper sports car, the only option is a six-speed manual transmission, and all power goes straight to the rear wheels. Other performance goodies include six-piston front and four-piston rear Brembo brakes, a magnetic adaptive suspension, and three driving modes. Compared to the Base trim, the R gets a stiffer suspension as well as differential, transmission, and engine-oil coolers. It also sheds weight by including carbon fiber wheels and a carbon fiber spoiler. All in, the Base Shelby GT350 hits 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, while the R will do it in 3.9. The top speed isn’t officially posted by Ford, but most publications have it at around 170 mph.
The Shelby GT350 comes standard with HID headlights, 19-inch wheels, keyless access and start, Recaro cloth racing seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in leather and Alcantara, an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone automatic climate control, aluminum pedals, a set of track-focused applications built into the car, a nine-speaker audio system, and USB connectivity. You can add six-way powered, heated, and cooled front seats clad in leather, navigation, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system for an extra cost. In order to celebrate the Shelby GT350’s final year, the 2020 model offers a Heritage Edition Package. That gets you the iconic Wimbledon White paint, Guardsman Blue stripes, and unique badge coloring, a throwback to Ford’s 1965 Mustang fastback coupe.
Safety-wise, every Shelby GT350 comes with a rear-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic monitoring. The Mustang family in general received decent crash scores from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
2020 is the swansong year for the amazing Ford Mustang Shelby GT350.
