2018 McLaren 570GT Preview summaryImage

The current McLaren range can be confusing at first glance. The cars look similar and have the same basic engine architecture, but they all offer different levels of performance and come at different price points. McLaren’s volume models are part of the “Sports Series” that debuted in 2015 with the 570S. A less powerful entry-level 540C exists, but that model doesn’t come to the U.S. market. The 570GT is the more practical version of the 570S. Unveiled in Geneva two years ago, the 570GT offers more cargo room, more sound deadening, and a generally softer ride, but it gives up little of the 570S’s savage performance.

For 2018, McLaren has responded to input from its customers and will allow buyers to blur the lines a bit between the softer 570GT and the more track-focused 570S. A newly available Sport Pack allows 570GT buyers to have the quicker steering, stiffer suspension, and stability control settings of the 570S but in the roomier and quieter 570GT package. Also for new 2018, carbon ceramic brakes are standard equipment on the GT, and there are five new “Design Edition” package options to choose from. These are pre-selected color schemes that are less expensive than individually selecting them.

Sitting behind the driver is the familiar twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-8 found in the rest of McLaren’s offerings. While the cockpit is a little quieter than in the 570S, it still screams at high revs to occupants’ satisfaction. It makes 562 horsepower and drives the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. The sprint from zero to sixty should take about three seconds flat, and the 570GT’s top speed is 204 mph. The 570GT is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 highway, and it takes premium fuel.

The Sports Series range has a slightly taller rear spoiler for 2018; otherwise, the 570GT is the same sharp performer through the bends that it always has been. Even buyers who don’t opt for the Sport Pack will be able to carve through curves like it’s nothing thanks to the McLaren’s state-of-the-art carbon fiber tub, cutting edge suspension, and now-standard carbon ceramic brakes.

Once inside, the big difference between the 570S and the 570GT is that the GT has a little more cargo space. Buyers can also opt for an electrochromic roof with adjustable levels of tint. The new “Design Edition” packages to choose from include Silica White over Saddle Tan and Carbon Black, Pacific Blue over Jet Black and Areia, Blade Silver over Natural Tan and Carbon Black, Fire Black over Jet Black and Areia, and Storm Grey over Jet Black and Almond White.

The 2018 McLaren 570GT starts at under $190,000—a lot of money—but it buys McLaren’s exotic styling, look-at-me colors, and the wail of its proprietary V-8.
