We bought one last year for my daughter, and she loves it. My son wanted the same car, so we bought a second one; this one being the cabrio version. Great cars for school or running around town. Lots of fun to drive, super easy to park, and very inexpensive to operate and maintain (both of the smarts we bought are electric). Not directly comparable to anything else on the road really. Nothing is quite a compact, nor does any other electric convertible exist, aside from Tesla’s Roadster. If there were anything similar, I’d have to say maybe the 500e, the Chevy Spark electric, or the Mini Cooper electric, though, those are all a little bigger and seat four. Overall, a fun car that’s diminutive in size, but can still accommodate two 6 foot tall adults with ample cargo space for its size. The ride is what you’d expect from a car with such a short wheelbase, but it balances that out with its ridiculously small turning radius. The range on the electric models is much shorter than the discontinued gas models , but offers a far better drive experience with its seamless drivetrain compared to the gas model’s lazy transmission, and the electric model has noticeably quicker acceleration by comparison. Charge rate is limited to J1772 & 110v, so no DC fast charging to speak of, making stops to charge out of town take longer than most would prefer, however, easily charges to a full battery overnight from your home’s 220v socket. The convertible is easy to operate and makes motoring in the smart even more fun when the weather is nice. As expected, the cabrio is not as quiet compared to its coupe sibling on the road, as sound more easily enters through the fabric. Also, the cabrio naturally has a full cloth top, where the coupe has a clear roof to view the sky with a retractable sliding cover. One could open the cabrio’s roof enough to also let in as much view to the sky as well, sans clear barrier. Otherwise, the coupe and the cabrio are practically identical . Worth mentioning, the cabrio’s roof bars above each door window can also be removed and stored in the car for even more top down motoring. If small cars are your thing, it doesn’t get much smaller than the smart. MB did a good job packaging a lot of convenience, style, and safety into a vehicle that is only 9 feet long. One could fit two in a single garage car space if desired. It sits nice and tall making it easy to see the road, and be seen for a car this size. Seating is comfortable, controls are simple and thoughtfully designed, and fit and finish are better than expected imo. Body panels are swappable/interchangeable if one desires, and are much more scratch & dent resistant than traditional painted metal panels. Overall, quite “smart” what swatch and MB came up with; smart standing for swatch mercedes art. For the early electric smarts, you even get Tesla’s battery & motor tech baked in. Honorable mention: green car reports honored the electric smart as the world’s greenest car in 2014, and smart has the honor of being the first car brand to full switch from internal combustion to fully electric. MB still sells the smart globally, but stopped importing it into North America in 2019., so finding parts and service may become more difficult as years go by. Thankfully though, the re isn’t much in the way of service or maintenance expected on the electric models. In all, I’m very happy with these cars. Jan 24, 2023
