The 2013 Land Rover LR4 offers a rugged, throwback approach to the sports utility world while at the same time letting those who want to get off-road and a little down and dirty do so in all kinds of style and comfort.
Start with the boxy and tall safari-ready look of the 2013 Land Rover LR4 that picks up where the LR3, discontinued in 2009 after a 5-year run, left off. The LR4 will no time soon be mistaken for a crossover. It does not drive like one, nor desire to be one. While most reviewers find it comfortable and a capable performer on pavement, some will suggest a list of rivals, vehicles such as the BMW X5, Lexus GX 460 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class, who are in about the same price neighborhood that outdo the LR4 to varying degrees on the road.
It’s in the rough stuff and in the dealing with tough and tricky conditions that the 2013 Land Rover LR4 truly shines.
A 5.0-liter V8 engine with direct fuel injection, good for 375 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque, efficiently powers the 2013 Land Rover LR4 and can push it from 0 to 60 in about 7.5 seconds. The engine gets paired to a smooth 6-speed automatic transmission that can be operated manually as well.
Full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD) is delivered by Land Rover’s highly regarded Terrain Response system, which lets the driver set the suspension to any of 5 settings: General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand or Rock Crawl. New suspension components, larger brakes and revised steering improve the LR4’s ride and handling. When properly equipped, the 2013 Land Rover LR4 can tow up to 7,716 pounds.
The experts have nothing but good things to say about the LR4 when it gets off the road. They like it on pavement, too, but there they feel it meets its match at times and that it still handles a little roughly and has some body roll. They also find it a bit costly overall and are less than impressed by its mileage numbers of 12 mpg city/17 highway.
A full-size SUV, the 2013 Land Rover LR4 comes with 5 seats but can be set up as a 7-seater.
Land Rover dressed some things up with the LR4 for 2013 and added a few color scheme options, but for the most part stuck with what works, including a comfortable, classy and luxurious interior. Land Rover loads the base LR4 with goodies from a power sunroof to leather upholstery to dual-zone climate control, a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and front and rear parking sensors.
A couple of HSE packages quickly up the luxury ante of the 2013 Land Rover LR4. The HSE version adds a rear parking camera, a navigation system that is hard-drive-based and voice recognition capability. The HSE Lux brings in heated front and second-row seats, premium leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel and rear climate control.
The 2013 Land Rover LR4 comes equipped with a wide collection of safety features, including traction and stability control systems, 4-channel ventilated disc brakes, electronic brake assist and a full array of airbags. A Heavy-Duty Package includes a full-size spare tire with a locking rear differential, and a Vision Assist Package has a surround camera system and a tow hitch assist system.

The LR4 (or Discovery 4 in international markets) is a nice improvement over the LR3 it replaced, with a lot of updated features, a better interior and cleaner/more modern styling, its a nice improvement over its predecessor in many ways.
Its comfortable and highly refined in the city and on the highway, it has excellent outward visibility and plenty of power for passing and cruising. It is also highly capable off-road and excellent for towing.
Its downsides are that the 5.0 V8 that replaced the 4.4 from the previous vehicle is less reliable and its not uncommon to have to do a timing chain job within the first 100k of its life. Its also thirstier than the outgoing engine (slightly) and LR recommends premium fuel, so it can be a very expensive vehicle to operate.
Overall I highly recommend this vehicle to Land Rover enthusiasts and anyone else who is looking for a highly capable SUV, demands a premium feel, and can afford the higher maintenance costs and fuel consumption of this type of vehicle. Aug 19, 2022

We enjoy the power of the V8 engine. After a week of driving the LR4 into the city, this car is a definitely a good value and solidly built. I believe that there may be other SUVs in this category. However, the classic exterior design of the 2013 LR4 ended in 2016. Other comparative designs are curved and rounded which make the other SUVs look more like crossover cars.Aug 26, 2021

We bought two LR4's within a few months of each other, one an HSE trim and the other an HSE LUX trim. The major differences are the upgraded leather seats in the LUX although high quality leather is standard in both trims. The LUX also had a cooler in the console, no big deal unless you need to keep something cold on a trip.
The vehicles have adjustable ride control so they ride about as well as a luxury vehicle, and have all terrain capability for go anywhere adaptability. The fit and finish on both vehicles was flawless, and neither had any issues requiring dealer service after the sale, with one exception, the rear view camera on the LUX went out and had to be reprogrammed. Other than that, two and a half years of smooth driving with none other than maintenance per schedule.
A word on maintenance...even under warranty, annual maintenance is EXPENSIVE. Don't purchase one of these if you expect normal maintenance such as with a Chevy or Ford. The dealer charges $250 for an oil change, filter and vehicle check. We decided to forego the recommended brake fluid flush for another year due to minimal usage, but also found another foreign vehicle service that will do it for less than half price and is highly recommended. The caveat is to find a good independent mechanic while still under warranty so you have a place to go should you have post warranty issues.
If you want a do-all, go anywhere vehicle that will haul you and your family anywhere, this is a great choice. MSRP on these was about $65K (HSE) and $70K (HSE LUX) as equipped.
A final note, the 2014 and newer do not have the V-8 Engine, rather a supercharged 6. Thus the 2013 and earlier are selling now for close to the new price, as serious off roaders and trailer towing people want the V-8 power.Nov 10, 2015
