Hot on the heels of a 2012 redesign, the 2013 Ford Focus carries over with a sporty new member of the pack and minuscule changes otherwise. This entirely front-wheel-drive 4-door lineup continues in sedan and hatchback flavors, ranging from the base S sedan to the hatch or sedan SE, SEL, and top-shelf Titanium trims, with the new turbocharged ST available only as a hatchback like the carried-over electric BEV trim. Last year's redesign is a big hit, but the Focus still seems a bit fuzzy around the edges with sometimes unpleasant road noise, limited rear legroom, complicated tech and some disappointing materials for the sticker price.
Nevertheless, the 2012 improvements were an impressive lot, including tech upgrades, materials upgrades and a pleasing style throughout. The new driving dynamics can't seem to get enough accolades from very happy drivers who called the 2012 edition fun to drive and even engaging in an almost unprecedented showing of review love on CarGurus and elsewhere. Ford focuses that winning combination in 2013 with a performance-tuned ST hatch with aggressive looks to match, and early drivers are very much impressed.
A great deal of electronic compensation makes the 2013 Ford Focus ST a refined speed demon requiring little work to outmaneuver any field of cones on dry, even pavement. Any other driving conditions will expose the wild side of these 252 horses and 270 lb-ft of torque singing from the centered dual exhaust pipes. The ST's turbocharged 2-liter inline-4 is basically the same 2-liter inline-4 used in every other gas-powered Focus, save for the turbo of course, but it also differs in that only a 6-speed manual is available, whereas the rest of the lineup is offered with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch auto-manual. For all this the ST only chews through about another 2 mpg with an estimated 26 mpg city/36 highway.
The dominant engine is a 160-hp naturally aspirated 2-liter inline 4-cylinder capable of a zip-to-60 sprint in 8.3 seconds when paired with the manual, losing just 0.4 seconds off that time with the remarkably smooth automated manual. The ST achieves the same in 6.4 seconds, but won't fetch the same 28/38 mpg the naturally aspirated version gets with the automated manual, or 26/36 with the stick. An additional Super Fuel Economy option pack for the SE sedan reliably bumps that automatic's awesome rationing to 28/40.
For even more economy, the Focus Electric, also known as the BEV, affords an amazing 110/99 mpge rating out of its 107-kilowatt electric drive motor and 23-kWh lithium-ion battery. Ford estimates a max range of about 76 miles, and with the standard 240-volt charger, it requires only about 4 hours for a complete refill. For an idea of the tech in every Focus, the Electric is well-equipped with heated front seats, eco-friendly materials, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ambient lighting, push-button start, a 9-speaker premium Sony sound system with HD radio and Sync with special electric car considerations included in the MyFord Touch system, adding among other things the ability to manipulate certain car functions from your cell phone.

while this car has given me 42k miles in 5 years (bought it in 2018 at 107000 from a family member), it is one of the most unreliable cars ive seen. first it was the battery, then the whole fuse panel, then the clutch actuators and now the thing has an issue shifting at all. ford dry clutch system is a JOKE. car had the clutch replaced 3 times under warranty and its almost clockwork every 40k miles. i consider myself lucky i havent had to do it yet since i bought it. bluetooth system also likes to act like my music is on fast forward. i have such a love-hate relationship with this car its sick. its great for a first time driver, but youre gonna put way more money into it than its worth.Jul 14, 2023

The car had clear rust marks on the hood, front two tires are completely bald. The frond fender is clearly loose. The inside is a complete mess, they couldn’t even vacuum it and make the car presentable. The seats are all nasty front and back the driver seat is partially tearing. The pedals are almost non existent it’s all medal. Was very disappointed. With a car in that condition and still asking for 17,000 is a joke.Nov 18, 2020

Appearance - exciting European aesthetics makes the car look fast and sporty.
Build quality - everything is well put together. No rattles. No repairs whatsoever since new, super cheap to maintain, and to run.
Performance - although not a fast car, but the manual transmission really helps to speed things up, and keep things exciting for the driver. The clutch feels light and easy to use. Braking is sensitive when needed, and not overly so. The handling of the car is well balanced - European style suspension inspires sporty handling, but soaks up bumps easily when going over pot holes, and cracks.Feb 22, 2015

This car has everything I wanted when I shopped for something affordable, with quality and expectations of reliability. You know that you're going to get big milage out of a quality vehicle like this and for 25k it's tough to beat. You could get a kia, or nissan, but something made in America that handles like it's from Japan, sips fuel like it's from Germany, and has the lure of Americana.

I don't dislike anything about this vehicle. I will keep you updated. I have some issues with the CVT transmission, but only because this is my first vehicle with this type of drivetrain. I find it feels as thought it is slipping and over-revving, but I can't pin point it yet. The car sounds good too. I never thought an Inline-4 could be so beautiful.May 24, 2013

Certainly and exciting car with character busting from the seams. It's not luxury, but it's by no means economy either. The sport mode is nifty for getting that extra kick while entering the interstate or passing. Typical drive mode keeps the MPG right around 29 with typical mixed driving around town. Is the shift actuator part of the transmission control module?
4 months after having the TCM (transmission control module) replaced our car is having the same issues (shuddering, no start, stuck in gear, slipping while in gear, high revving, etc)... We are being told that the problems are being caused by the shift actuator and not the TCM and that it is not covered under the warranty and will cost us $2500. Is the shift actuator part of the TCM and can a bad one cause the above symptoms?

Okay so my ac heat and high beams all went out at the same time as well as my air bag light came on. I thought alternator at first but quickly decided against that. Still had it check and it's fine. Blower motor not working
Having an issue with my blower motor. I check for power at motor and nothing. All fuses good and swapped relays still nothing. I read a forum suggested jumping pin 30 and 87 and it worked. I checked pin 86 for power and 85 for ground all good. I ran a jumper wire from pin 85 direct to ground and nothing. When I jump pin 30 and 87 blower works fine in all speeds. What am I missing? I dont think i can leave the relay bypassed for long.
