BMW seems reluctant to fuss much with the winning formula it's concocted with its new MINI, instead opting for small changes to keep its compact competitive. For 2012 that means a lot of little fixes and stylistic adjustments, including new trims and wheels, a revised front fascia, taller hood, bigger fog lights and redesigned taillights. There are also some new colors – Orange Spice, British Racing Green and Eclipse Grey - and the supercharged S gets some attention as well with new functional braking ducts and a unique front bumper.
Even the powertrains get a bit of a nudge, with reduced internal friction in the base 1.6-liter engine resulting in a 2-hp boost up to 121 and remapped variable valve timing giving the supercharged S a new output of 181 hp. The 6-speed manual transmission is still standard and still buttery-smooth to operate, but the laggy 6-speed automatic remains an option. Torque steer that has plagued the Cooper from the beginning has been addressed thanks to retuning of the electric steering, but is not gone.
Inside, there are more changes to be seen. As seems to be the trend with many manufacturers this year, chrome is fading away, replaced here by more black. The quirky, centrally located speedo is still here, however, and it’s getting less quirky and more annoying with age, but stereo controls have finally been relocated to a more convenient position. The stereo itself is still a bit underpowered, especially in the convertible, but the optional 10-speaker upgrade takes care of that nicely.
While the MINI has always been a nimble and agile performer, its stiff suspension has been known to get a bit taxing on the highway as the miles pile up. It’s not a major concern in the Base with its stock suspension and 15-inch wheels, but with the sport setup in the S and John Cooper Works versions, and the subsequent wheel size increases to 16 and 17 inches, the ride can get quite tiring. The standard run-flat tires on the S only exacerbate the issue and take a lot of fun out of the MINI, at least in the long term. Spirited jaunts around town are still invigorating, albeit less so on the pothole-strewn motorways of the snow belt than on glass-smooth southern surfaces.
The other ubiquitous complaint with the MINI has always been the noise, penetrating into the cabin via road and tires and wind. More insulation has been added this year, but long-term testing will be needed to really judge its effectiveness.
As the MINI gets on in years – and still looks much the same as it did upon its introduction – its charming appeal wanes, much like what happened with the new Beetle. That makes its high price seem ever higher in comparison. Changes here are welcome, but they don’t justify yet another price increase. This year, it’s around $700, which pushes the base MINI past the $20,000 mark, and with one or two clicks on the options list, the Works version easily crests thirty grand. If you want to keep us interested, give us more, don’t just charge us more.

The car was really fun to drive, and thats about it. Ive owned two of these vehicles and both, have had major issues. Weather or not the transmission forks were broken or the valve cover gasket was leaking onto the serpentine belt and making it fly off was insane. Fun car, terrible reliability. Apr 05, 2023

A few YouTube videos described the Mini as a street legal go-cart ... 100% true. Loads of fun!
Still determining if its a good value because Im finding issues that were not apparent when test driving. Like low on oil and coolant and a possibly related acceleration issue.
All manageable and repairable, I think, but frustrating to have to do this much immediate maintenance on a new (used) car purchase.
Hazards of buying used.

Definitely a driver's car. Excellent mileage, tight handling, responsiveness, classic Euro-motor sensibility. The turbo gets you MOVING, and the stick shift is tight. You think about where you want to go, and the car goes there. Some quirky styling, especially with the radio, but you get to know it quickly and it becomes second-nature.

This is a small, very fun car. I needed to be able to fit in a very small garage space and drive up and down the hills of San Francisco to get to work. This car is easy to find parking, fun to drive, and gets good gas mileage. I've been able to get as high as 40 MPG on the highway. The power is good enough to get up most hills in 2nd gear. As for cons, because this car is a convertible, there are severe blind spots when the top is up. Another con: my teenage daughter doesn't like riding in the backseat for long periods of time. There is absolutely nothing to dislike about a MINI except the price, They are still in high demand. All the things you do to a car means nothing when you go to trade it in, though it does maintain it's value pretty well. These cars are well built, handle like a dream and are as quick as you want them to be. I still love them and that's my problem, if I had a lot of money, I would need a big garage. When I fall in love with a car, I'm like a school kid, infatuated by the great looks and sensuality that they have. This car had handling and beauty with control in spades.Aug 09, 2013

I really like that the car is small. It makes it lightweight so the power it comes with makes it a pretty quick car.
It also has a really nice exhaust note which surprises many unassuming people. The power coming out of turns is unmatched in this class.
There is nothing to really complain about the car. I guess you can say it needs a bit more room, but the point of the car is to be small, not a people mover. Although, the rear interior did surprise some people. It was a lot bigger than people thought it was.Jun 07, 2013

Really nothing. This would be an especially great car for someone living in a large city. Very maneuverable, easy to park. Typically get 25 +mpg in town and high 30's on the highway. I have wanted a MINI for a long time. The car is amazing, very high sharp handling and all the amenities of a luxury car. It is so much fun to drive. I am only getting around 33mpg overall maybe because the car begs to be driven. With the back seats folded down there is plenty of space for trips to Lowe's. I especially like the 3 year no cost maintenance and the 4/50 bumper to bumper warranty. I have never had so much fun with any car than the MINI Copper. It is excellent all-around with great performance.
One negative point: When the car was near 800 miles I had to call road side assistance due to a power failure. According to MINI the radio was improperly installed at the factory and eventually drained the battery. It took close to two weeks to get a replacement radio from Germany. Besides that the customer service in all areas was magnificent. I was just worried about this hiccup because none of my Honda's have ever failed me in any capacity. Jul 08, 2011

does changing the front windshield in a 2011 mini cooper s affect any electrical wiring? We had our front windshield replaced and the next time we drove the car the drivers side electric window isn't working properly, the front headlight was out and the back hatch isn't staying closed. None of these were problems before, we drive the car every day.

White smoke from exhaust after idling for a few minutes
I have a 2011 Mini Cooper S, I purchased it with around 77k miles on it a few months ago. When the car stays still and idles for a few minutes and then you drive after idling it white smoke comes out of the exhaust. The car does need new spark plugs and they will Be replaced soon but I’m curious as to what might be causing it, I was told that because it’s turbocharged it will burn oil more and I figured that was it as I need a top up every now and again. If you guys have any input it would be appreciated, thanks!

what is the third circle in my mini cockpit?
I just bought a 2011 cooper convertible. The cockpit has 3 circles behind the steering wheel. The left is the timer for the top down, the center is the digital tachometer and then there is a small circle that moves up and down (adjustable) and it has a cord with adapter hanging from it. Any clue what it is for? I can't find another car cockpit picture with it in there.
