2010 Hummer H2 Preview summaryImage

The 2010 Hummer H2 still has all the qualities that have enabled past models to carve out their own “battleship on wheels” niche: uniquely aggressive styling, massive size, and ground-rumbling power.

The 2010 H2 comes in three trims – Base, Adventure, and Luxury. All three are powered by a 6.2-liter V8 Vortec engine (capable of 393 hp at 5,700 rpm and 415 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 rpm) mated to a Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission. The H2 has a maximum towing capacity of 8,200 pounds and a maximum payload of 2,200 pounds.

The H2 is the largest of the Hummers on the market and clearly not ideal for city driving, where its mileage is somewhere below 10 mpg. But the H2 is an off-road force with its automatic full-time four-wheel drive, traction control system, independent front suspension with gas-charged shocks and a stabilizer bar, a five-link variable-rate coil spring suspension in the rear, and 17-inch wheels with LT315/70R17 all-terrain tires.

All that off-road technology allows the H2 to traverse a 40-percent off-camber slope and tackle a 60-percent incline or decline. It can also ford 20 inches of standing water and climb a 16-inch vertical wall. When it's on a paved surface, the H2 can go from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds, a fairly impressive number for this mountainous vehicle.

All three H2 trims have the following exterior features: power-folding and heated mirrors, sunroof, brush grill guard, bumper-mounted rear tire carrier, silver painted bumpers, front bumper with retrieval loops and a hitch/winch receiver, rear bumper with tow loops and a Class 3 hitch receiver, and full undercarriage protection with an extra-large skid plate, a fuel tank shield, and rocker panel protectors.

The interior is as well-appointed as the exterior is rugged. All three trims come standard with cruise control, Bluetooth, remote start, power locks and windows with express up/down, dual-zone heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, an auxiliary rear heating/cooling system, eight-way power leather front seats with driver memory, second-row captain’s chairs, heated front and rear seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, leather-covered center console, in-dash 6-CD changer with Bose sound system, rear-seat audio controls with headphone jacks, and triple-sealed doors and enhanced acoustical insulation.

All that technology is operated by easy-to-use controls and matched with quality materials. The second row of seats does have a 60/40 split but doesn’t fold flat, making some of the 86.6 cubic feet of cargo space a bit awkward. The second row can feel tight around the legs if the front seats are pushed too far back, and it might not be quite large enough to provide comfortable seating for three adults. The third row is probably best suited for children. The cabin is quiet under 65 mph, but gets louder over that speed.

The H2 provides plenty of safety with its size (its gross vehicle weight is 8,600 pounds), welded ladder-type frame construction, Panic Brake Assist and StabiliTrak Stability Enhancement System, dual front airbags, head-curtain side airbags for all three rows of seats, and the OnStar Directions and Connections plan.
