When it came time to update its popular 9-3 sport sedan for 2008, Saab turned not only to its long-standing inspiration, a jet aircraft, but also to a more down-to-earth, though admittedly futuristic source, the Aero X concept car. Even with its aircraft connection, the new 2008 Saab 9-3 doesn't fly, but it can fly down the road, thanks to a more streamlined, aerodynamic appearance and Saab's peppy, turbocharged engines.
Exterior enhancements for 2008 include a deeper, more prominent grille that dips further down into the 9-3's bumper, Nordic iceblock-inspired taillights (which Saab notes are inspired by its Scandinavian heritage), and a sleeker overwrap (raised) hood. Saab has also redesigned the 9-3's front lower fascia as well as the housings for the foglights to give the updated sedan a more aggressive appearance. The result is a sleek, prominent nose that indeed has a jet-like appearance.
Saab also added a number of new standard features to the 9-3 package for 2008, including a tire-pressure monitoring system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, XM satellite radio, a year of OnStar, and 16-inch, 14-spoke alloy wheels.
The 2008 Saab 9-3 is available in 2.0T and Aero trims, as either a sedan or a convertible. The convertible features a simplified drop-top with remote-control opening and express-close windows.
Saab also adds an electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system, called XWD, or cross-wheel drive, which is available as an option on all '08 trims (availability is scheduled for early 2008). Engines include a 207-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which powers the 2.0T, and a 252-horsepower, 2.8-liter turbocharged V6 for the Aero trims.
Reviewers have noted that while the new Saab's exterior design tweaks are impressive and the cabin is comfortable (especially the seats), the new 9-3 still lacks in areas such as the suspension, steering, and overall handling, especially when compared to some of the competitive sedans coming out of Germany. However, with the addition of the new XWD system, all those problems go away, and the 9-3 evolves into a road warrior with superb overall handling, according to a number of reviewers and test drivers.

I have owned two manual 9-3 Aeros. Both were front wheel drive sedans. These are great economical package if you want performance, comfort and a sharp design, without the reliability issues of its German competitors such as the E90 335i or B7 A4. This is a car that you could take on a road trip and not get tired driving in. The layout of the interior is very driver friendly and is easy to operate. Parts availability is not an issue with this Saab, most parts are still available new, and used parts are plentiful. If you do not work on cars yourself, take this to someone who knows Saabs, if your mechanic does not own or know what a Tech2 is, dont let him touch your car. The flaws of the car I would have to say are the shifter, its very notchy and feels more clunky compared to other front wheel drive cars and the interior is more prone to rattling with age. Overall I would recommend if you are looking for a comfortable, classy used car that stands out from the crowd. Sep 16, 2024

Very unique that you hardly see on the streets once a month.
It may be not the best convertible that I could choose but it is quite outstanding for its quirkiness and great acceleration from V6 turbo engine. I love every quirky things that Saab has... night panel, wired ignite location, even that inconvenient cup holder design, old school interior and many others. Well, maintenance could be challenging with the company gone, but Ill definitely keep this as long as I can do.

One of the best cars you can get. It can outrun a bmw, audi and merc. And still it runs cheaper on fuel. Service bills are cheaper also.
I have the 180 bhp Twin turbo diesel now. It holds 400NM of torque. Its give a good kick , and its VERY economical in useMar 27, 2012

I have owned three Saab convertibles, but this is the finest. No problems
what-so-ever. Performance and handling are great as is the build quality.
A quiet and fun ride. An amazing car, if you enjoy the open air

Lovely car, very comfortable, and loaded with great features, from parking assist (car beeps when in reverse and approaching a solid object) to OnStar to a chilled, lockable glove-box. The convertible roof opens/closes in 20 seconds and no longer needs to be latched manually as with older models. Pretty cool that you can open the roof with the remote while standing outside the car. Peculiar that you can't CLOSE the top again the same way; you have to be sitting inside the Saab for that, and use a switch on the dashboard.
Acceleration and braking are strong, though I find the car a bit "polite" for my taste. My 1997 Saab ragtop had 25 fewer horses but it seemed to have a little bit more "get-up-and-go," perhaps due in part to the more aggressively tuned engine and an exhaust sound that was unmistakable from a hundred feet away. The older car was a bulldog mix; the new one a purebred setter. I can see the attraction in either.
I love the exterior styling -- elegant while still retaining a good chunk of fairly rakish sports-car persona.
Inside, Saab has pulled back from the mid-nineties cheapness born from being forced to use the GM general-parts bin, though remnants of it remain. Both visually and in a tactile sense, the plastic handbrake is a disappointment in a $43,000 car, as are the perennially flimsy cupholders. Swedes don't "get" cupholders, for some reason. My feeling is that if you're going to be selling on the American market, your designers ought to damn well include sturdy Big-Gulp-loving cupholders, and not treat the job with apparent disdain, as an afterthought. Thumbs down on that one.
That said, fit and finish are very good overall, the leather is nice and pretty and soft, and at night the dash and lighted controls are just this side of understated. The cheap Christmas-tree look of earlier (nineties) model years has thankfully been tamed. (But what happened to the reading lights for the backseat? Axed and gone, but not forgotten. A strange way to save a few bucks.)
The Saab 9-3 convertible is lower to the ground than its predecessor and as a result has a center of gravity that pushes it against the road, though the car is ready to rumble at a moment's notice -- as in "just a moment," because a touch of turbo lag has never been quite expunged from Saab engine design. No matter, though; flooring the gas pedal makes for fun, even exhilarating driving, especially with the top down.
I had my previous Saab droptop for ten years before I sold it, and I plan on having the current one for at least as long. No doubt it will serve me faithfully and provide a safe and joyful ride, especially on days when the desire for wind-in-your-hair excess meets up with sunshine and the feeling-free fun that's embodied by a quality convertible.

Dislike the moonroof issues and lack of aftermarket
possibilities currently.
Like everything else. A solid built and stable car. The
warranty coverage is great with minimal cost of ownership.
The car is very fun to drive especially with the power down

Overall, I have found my vehicle to meet or exceed my expectations. With just a four banger, you can move fast, while still achieving great gas mileage. It is a thinkers care, giving you, the driver lots of information/warnings as needed.

2008 Saab 9-3 1.9TDi Vector Sport 150BHP, Silver 17" Alloy rims. 0-60 in around 9 seconds odd (stock). Nice old Cherry Air freshener inside so welcome your nostrils :D. Sport mode keeps the revs at around 2.5k even at a low speed.May 23, 2009

Performance - It accelerates very well but loses traction in first gear. The braking is very responsive but not too sensitive. The handling it sporty, but a little numb. It tends to understeer a little under extreme maneuvers. I have no complaints about the build quality, however it only has 4000 miles on it. I guess the flip out cup holder on the dash could be sturdier.The interior styling is excellent, however I'm not a huge fan of the two-tone seats. I love the look of the steering wheel. The exterior is also very nice. I don't necessarily like the side profile, but I am a coupe guy. The front is very eye-catching and the white taillights look excellent. The gas mileage is a big negative. For the horsepower, it should get much better mileage. I average about 16 in the city. I know of other cars with 300+ horsepower that get the same city mpgs. I have never taken it to the shop, but Saab of Troy offers free service (oil change, check up, etc.) so that's a plus. The car is very fun to drive, especially with the stick shift; however, the shifter and clutch have very long throws. The shifter also does not operate very smoothly. I love the low-end torque and the almost non-existent turbo lag. Overall, it is a fun car with some great styling cues. Oct 27, 2008

into its stride with the roof down. Great feeling of the
wind rushing through your hair. Styling is nice inside,
and looks good from the outside. Seems to have good
build quality. Not sure how cheap or expensive it

Excellant handling. If you need to get somewhere quick, this car will get you there! Great on gas, Cockpit is well designed and user freindly. Easy to maintain. The car is still new so no reports on maintenance just yet. Hard to believe it is under 250HP! If you really want to have some fun, switch it to manual mode :-)Jul 27, 2008

I drove about 12 cars over a 1 month period. From Volvo, BMW, Audi, Subaru, Cadillac,
VW, Acura, even Ford .... the list goes on. My 2nd choice was a Subaru Legacy GT specB,
but they couldn't find one with a stick on the east coast. So I finally hiked 30 miles to my
nearest Saab dealer, drove the 9-3, and I knew that was it. It is the ONLY car with:
manual transmission, 200+hp 4-cyl turbo, NO navigation(!), seat warmers (important),
except for the Subaru. But for essentially the same price, I didn't see the Subaru holding
up as well as the Saab. It just seemed... to have 1990's fit and finish. When I saw the
combi had the same mass, wheelbase, 0-60, etc.. as the sedan, then that was the final
option that sold the wife. (That is, I could spend the $ on this without the hastle.)
Sometimes I wish I went for the Aero (only $1.8K more for equivalent options), but when I
fill up the tank and avg 30mpg, I'm convinced I did the right thing.Jun 26, 2008

Purchased as my daily driver in AZ, I enjoy the 2.0 Turbocharged Engine. I thought it would be light on power but it is definitely adequate for the car. I opted for a fuly loaded 2.0T with nav and the optional sand top and Fusion Blue Exterior. Gets about 28MPG on the highway and looks reall nice with the top up or down!Mar 31, 2008
