Fresh off its big debut as a concept car at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show, the 2008 Pontiac G8 production vehicle will stray from the concept only in its higher ground clearance and smaller tires. The G8 is built on the new Zeta platform and will replace the Grand Prix, though it is smaller than that car and its direct competitor, the Dodge Charger.
The sports sedan will come in base and high-performance GT trims. The base will feature a 3.6-liter, 261-hp V6 with either a 5-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. The GT will let you watch others cough in your dust, as it has a 6.0-liter V8 engine that hits 362-hp and comes with a 6-speed automatic or manual. It is also able to disengage four of its cylinders when not in use in order to improve fuel economy. All of the 2008 Pontiac G8s come standard with six airbags, ABS brakes, traction control, and stability control. Power features, including power seats, are also standard. Though both trims sit on 18-inch wheels, a Sports Package upgrades those to 19-inch and adds a spoiler, sport suspension, and 11 speakers (with five people in the car, that's one for each ear, with a spare for the dog).
On the outside of the 2008 G8, the GT features twin functional hood scoops and four exhaust tips, to the base model's twin exhausts. The roofline slope is reminiscent of old fastbacks, giving this sedan a style that hints at Pontiac's return to performance brands.

It’s a great car. It has the neck breaking looks and if you get the GT or GXP, you have all of the power you need. Over time, normal wear will show on the car but it’s nothing to be worried about if you take care of it. Overall a great car. I wish Pontiac was still in business.Oct 06, 2022

I purchased the G8 GT new and have been extremely happy with the style and performance. The 6.0L 361hp V-8 and 6-speed automatic really deliver amazing performance. Fully independent suspension, wide tires, and 50/50 weight distribution give it incredible handling. 4-wheel disc brakes, traction and stability control just add to the fun. With the Active Fuel Management, I get about 21 mpg which I think is great for a car with the G8's performance.Aug 14, 2014

With only 2k on the road for 2008 they always draw attention. With a Corvette based V8 it just has an attitude that you don't find in many cars today. It has become my show only car. It stays in the garage and only comes out for local shows.Apr 21, 2013

If i did not have a 3rd child now i would never consider selling this. It has taken me almost 2 years just to list it. This is the car that you keep and will be in shows someday. Beastly power, great size with a huge trunk. Extremely good handling and excellent highway fuel economy 25 mpg for a V8 6 liter is unheard of.Feb 26, 2013

Overall I love this car. It has everything you could want in a sports car but built into a family sedan. There are only a few minor issues with the interior designs and seat moldings which need to be refined. But from a 1 to 10 rating I give this one a 9.5.Aug 09, 2011

When I test drove this car, I had originally gone to the dealership to test drive a 2005 Bonneville, of which I have already owned three, my last on being a 1999. The legroom was less than what I had hoped, so the salesman literally said "Try this on for size" referring to a beautiful black G8 GT. We took it up on the highway, and he said "Go ahead, open 'er up"...and boy did I! I fell in love. And boy does it have leg room! And I'm trying to figure out how I survived without OnStar all of my life. What I love even more is that not only has it not lost any value, but the car is already worth more than I paid for it! The power is amazing, I love the ability to switch between manual and automatic on the fly, I love the large pass-thru in the backseat. Oh hell, there isn't much I don't like about the car. It does suck in the snow. That's my biggest gripe, but my other car is back on the road so it will never see snow again!Jul 13, 2010

This car has got to be the most exhilarating car to drive. The power that this car has is so much more than anyone needs. The interior is simple and basic and has everything someone would need including 2 outlets to plug in your phone or ipod, etc. Considering the 6 liter engine, the gas mileage is very fair at around 17 mpg, and i tend to have a lead foot. my g8 gt is the sweetest car I have ever driven. The performance is unbelievable. the fit and finish is such a vast improvement over previous pontiacs. A car you can feel cool in and still take the family out to dinner. I absoulutely love the car. sporty infinity's and lexus's look at you with envy knowing you can smoke them with ease. Performance –
Acceleration, braking and handling on this car is phenomenal. There is a reason all of the car rags compare it to BMW....
Build Quality –
Has not needed any repairs. Has nice and tight panel gaps.
Appearance –
The exterior has a very European flair, but with the Panther Black Metallic paint, it is fairly stealthy. The interior is very nicely styled (with the leather seats).
Cost of Ownership –
Hwy mileage is great for a 6.0L V8 - 27+ mpg. In town, it is a function of how much you can keep your foot out of it. Only other maintenance costs to date is oil changes. A little pricey as it takes almost 10 qts of oil.
Fun Factor –
This car is an absolute blast to drive. I ALWAYS enjoy driving it.
Other-
Tons of leg room for everyone, especially the back seat. Largest trunk in its class (17+ cu ft, Charger & Maxima both have 15 cu ft).Jan 19, 2009

Fast and sexy. What else could you want. 0-60 in
about 4 seconds now, 1/4 mid to high 12's, huge
breaks, great handling especially for a 4000 lb. car,
amazing exterior styling, very nice and roomy interior,
mileage sucks around time but is awsome on the
highway and fun to drive id say is a 9.5 on a scale

Fast as hell and still a family car. The seats hug you well and the stereo cranks real nice, especially with 2000 watts pumping to two 12's in the trunk (my specialty).
I get lots of great comments and a respectable MPG to boot!

I bought the pontiac g8 because of the way it handles on the road. I've owned pontiacs before and I wasn't quite as pleased as I am with this car. It has everything heated leather seats, sunroof, digital stereo, V6 engine, and one of the sharpest looking cars I have ever seen. Oct 08, 2008

Don't tell Budget Rent-A-Car (actually report me if you want, it's their problem if they didn't want me driving it), but my dad let me drive it for a bit when we rented it in Minnesota. I love just about everything about my car - the few things I'd change are minor - and interior. The headrests - the way they sit - stupid - bad for short people. The light for the airbag in the review mirror - too bright for at night - they should have it auto turn off after some time. I LOVE HOW FAST IT IS! I LOVE HOW BAD ASS IT LOOKS! On this G-8 when I excel on the pedal, the right rear side will make a thudding noise that will not be heard again in till I stop and excel again. If I'm stopped and I excel slowly, this thudding noise will not happen. Only can be heard when I excel rapidly. And on the right side. Looked under and I see no apparent issues. Your thoughts.

Growling on startup in cold weather
My 2008 Pontiac G8 growls and engine stutters only when I start it in cold weather. I have been told the A/C compressor may be going bad although ac works fine and makes no noise of any kind...i.e. sqeeling, hissing, whinning. Can you advise as to what the problem amy be.
