2006 Scion xA Preview summaryImage

Though targeted at the youth market, the 5-door 2006 Scion xA hatchback wagon is popular with all age groups, for its great value, low price, roomy inside, and long list of customizable accessories. The 2006 xA will be the last year for this rebadged Japanese Ist, as Scion begins developing more of its own cars, with the arrival of the xD in 2007.

Most of the changes to the 2006 xA center on a redesigned grille, front fascia, and new head and tail lamps. Some new standard features include turn signals in the mirrors, and a Pioneer audio system with iPod connection that displays song and artist info on a head unit screen. A set of audio controls are now on the steering wheel. The 2006 xA is still powered by a 1.5-liter, 103-hp I4 with standard 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic. Dual front airbags and side impact and curtain are all optional.

Though it has a long list of dealer-installed options, which is what attracts most buyers, the 2006 Scion xA also comes nicely equipped with ABS brakes, air conditioning, power locks, windows, and mirrors, and a tilt steering wheel. Rear seats split-fold 60/40, increasing cargo capacity to 33 cubic feet. It receives 4-star crash ratings, thanks to the Toyota build quality. Drivers love the easy of accessorizing, the high gas mileage, looks, great overall value, and the agile handling around town. The sound system is also a plus. Overall size and passenger room make it comfortable and ideal even for families, though some wish there was more cargo room and complain that the ride can feel rough on less than smooth roads. Other negatives are a slow pickup, a need for more power and a 6-speed transmission, and some engine noise.

Performance: I would have to say that I enjoy the overall performance from my vehicle, it has great handling, fun to drive, and was definitely a good buy fora college student. Build: The only repair that I did have to do on the car so far was to get new rotors, but that was easily fixable. Appearance: I love the exterior of the car, though I hope to myself get tinted windows I couldn't be happier with the 'edginess' this car seems to have. Cost of Ownership: The gas milage in mine is absolutely fantastic, driving manual with highway driving I get around 40MPG, and around town I usually get 36 - 38 MPG. Excellent.Apr 21, 2010
