2006 Ford Econoline Wagon Preview summaryImage

Apparently the favorite TV shows of those who buy the Ford Econoline Wagon are "CSI" and "Law and Order." Whether that's because the commercial or cargo van is large enough to conceal dead bodies or just haul around forensic equipment has yet to be verified, but the 2006 Econoline Wagon is a versatile and roomy alternative to trendy SUVs that tend to cost a lot more. The biggest change this year to the Econoline is the addition of AdvanceTrac stability control to the E-350 Extended van, as well as a transmission oil cooler in all models.

The front-wheel drive cargo van is offered as either an E-150 or E-350 regular or extended, in both XL or XLT trims. A more luxury Chateau trim is offered in regular-size models, and ads a CD player and second row captain's chairs. Engine choices range from a 225-hp 4.6 or 255-hp 5.4 V8 in the E-150 to a 305-hp 6.8 V10 or 235-hp 6.0 turbodiesel V8 in the E-350. All the regular V8s come with a 4-speed automatic, while the V10 and diesel have a 5-speed automatic. Cargo space, depending on whether you get regular or extended versions, can hold up to 257 cubic feet, which is about 80% more than the Ford Excursion holds. The spacious interior can be outfitted from 7 passengers in the E-150 to up to 15 in the E-350.

The 2006 Econoline Wagon comes with a standard towing package that can be upgraded, with towing capacity ranging from 6600 to 10,000 pounds. A 60/40 split side door is standard, and a sliding door can be added. The van can be outfitted with or without rear windows. Power features and air conditioning are also standard, with options for a power driver's seat, leather upholstery, and a 6-CD changer. Though often considered a commercial hauler, the 2006 Ford Econoline can be a nice affordable, if less stylish, alternative to an SUV if you know you need to be transporting a lot of kids or a lot of cargo. Drivers like the handling and space, but dislike the gas mileage and wide turning radius.
