The tC, introduced in 2005, represented a departure from the existing Scion models. The xA and xB were both modestly performing four-door hatchbacks, but the new tC provided Scion buyers with a more performance-focused compact car.
Aside from the styling, the tC is set apart by a comparatively potent 2.4 liter inline four engine, enhanced by Toyota's Variable Valve Timing + intelligence technology. This power plant generates 160 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, sending the tC from 0 to 60 in 7.8 seconds and through the quarter mile in 15.7. A five-speed manual transmission is included, and highly preferred, but a four-speed automatic optional. Fuel economy for the tC is estimated at 22/29 mpg.
The tC is a hatchback, like the othe Scion models, which allows for some additional flexibility with cargo. This compact coupe actually offers a surprising 60 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The coupe can accommodate five passengers, and the 106 inch wheelbase creates extra legroom in the rear. The tC is the most expensive Scion, but features are commensurate with the cost. Standard equipment includes a Pioneer CD/MP3 sound system, 17-inch alloy wheels, a power moon roof, a fixed glass rear sunroof, full power accessories and keyless entry. The tC is also the only Scion to offer cruise control. Safety equipment includes ABS and knee airbags.
Taller drivers found the compact tC plenty spacious, and the well-equipped interior is a common favorite feature. Some owners felt that the tC should be eligible for the same level of customization as the xB, but most expressed great satisfaction with the coupe as is. Common complaints included excessive engine noise, a rough ride and some low quality interior materials.

These scions are made and designed very well. Never had a issue with it and has never needed anything more than brakes or a oil change. I give this car 5 stars because of its reliability and the great amount of miles you can go on a single tank of gas. by far my most favorite car ever personally owned.May 12, 2015

this car was very reliable but its not meant to be able to put a car seat in the back. I've never had any issues with the vehicle. the car is very safe and gets pretty good gas mileage also.Mar 05, 2015

This is by far the best car I've owned yet. Quality, interior room (surprisingly, back seats are very spacious), performance, style and appearance are all top-notch. I had 148k without a single issue (besides rear-brake replacement), and it's unfortunate we're switching it out for a more family-friendly vehicle. Great car! Jun 23, 2014

For being an inexpensive car, it is everything you would want and more. Especially with the stock rims and the panoramic moonroof. I never once had to go in for non-scheduled maintenance and I doubt I would for another 10 years. Jun 20, 2014

Great fun first car for a teenager. Worked well for me all through high school and college. I've done the regular maintenance on it and everything is still running fine in the engine. I like all the room in the trunk and its quite peppy when getting on the gas.Apr 11, 2014

the car is great, runs awesome, handling is great, the gear box is smooth. its a fun
little car. i wouldnt get it automatic though. stick shift makes it so much fun. the
only thing toyota missed out on is that they shouldve put a 6 gear manual
transmition instead of a 5.. the 2.4 the car has, has enough power to handle that
extra gear.Sep 09, 2011

Decent car. Toyota quality, had no issues on it at all. Added cold air intake which it responded well to. Sold for DC5. Wouldn't mind having another but would not be first choice. No reason to stay away except personal preferenceDec 08, 2010

This car is just perfect for a first car. Easy maintenance, good gas mileage, fun to drive, and cheap to own. So far I have put 80,000 miles and only had to do regular maintenance like oil changes, tire rotation, brakes, and just the usual stuff.Jul 31, 2010

Its a great car, Build quality is good being that it
comes from toyota. Ive had it for almost 4 years
and have had no major problems. The car is a
commuter.. not a performer. Handling isnt great,
nor is acceleration or braking, but its not mean to
be a GTI. Overall if you dont have to put up with
snow... its a fun little hatch with a lot of standard
features.Nov 20, 2009

Performance is awesome for a 4cyl.
Clutch squeaks sometime.
Gas mileage average for a sports car.
Extremely fun to drive on the streets if you want a little more power and less maintenance fees.
Exterior is very sleek ad aerodynamic Oct 28, 2009

Disclaimer: I have some racing experience with autocross and also with faster, better handling cars.
I refuse to select 'sport coupe' as this is my only trim option, but overall I enjoy the car. In stock form the braking, handling, and acceleration are about what you would expect but not exceptional. The car is used primarily as a daily driver but it is at least somewhat involving to drive, aided by the fact that mine is a 5 speed.
There are a few areas that are prone to rattles, but I've learned to live with them. The hatch can rattle a bit on uneven pavement and/or in cooler temperatures. There is a service bulletin on this but it doesn't really fix the problem. The only issue that has happened to the car to date was an oil leak from the timing cover which was fixed under warranty.
If I drive conservatively gas mileage can be between 30-32 mpg with combined highway and city driving. Usually I average around 28-29 mpg with about 30-40% city and the rest highway.
As mentioned above, it is a fun car to drive. What would really help this car is weight reduction. Lighter cars are just a lot more enjoyable to drive. The car could also benefit from a 6 speed transmission. I expect this would give the car a few more MPG on the highway.Sep 29, 2009

For a four banger the acceleration is exceptional. I love that it'll get me there when I want to go fast but it saves on gas when you need it to with the VVT-i. The only thing that's gone wrong in the year I've had it is the throttle body went out but the was the consequence of driving through three feet of water. I love the looks of the tC. It's very sporty and the interior is very nice. Surprisingly for a two door the back passengers have quite a bit of leg room. From experience there is more leg room in the back of the tC then a four door civic or subaru impreza. This car is very fun to drive and handles like a dream. The steering is very responsive and so is the throttle. Over all i love this car and love that this is the way i was brought into the Toyota family.Aug 21, 2009

It's a great all around car. Looks good inside and out, with nice styling cues that seem to hold up well over time. Performance is moderate for a sporty coupe; better than average, but nothing to write home about. Its fun to drive, seats 5, huge rear seats, good gas mileage, and will have a long life of toyota reliability. It never really jumps out in any one catagory, but is above average overall in practically everything. Jul 06, 2009

Dependable car with style. Lots of bang for your buck. Its not fast but is quick. This car is only a 10th of a second slower than an is300. Brilliant handling that is not hard to drive for long distances.Mar 31, 2009

Performance – acceleration, braking, handling
Everything is Great, I installed a cool Air In-Take which gives me better mpg plus also more power and better quality air flow plus the sound was enhanced. Handles great
Build Quality – has it needed repairs? squeaks/rattles
Other then me installing the cool air-intake its a pretty solid built car. I keep up daily on the oil changes plus the tire rotation
Appearance – both interior and exterior styling
When I bought this car, they let you customize it the way you wanted. I got the LED lights, spoiler, Pedal Covers, 6 CD changer cuz it holds 6 and the display changes colors
Cost of Ownership – gas mileage
MPG is Great with the cool air-intake
Fun Factor – is this car fun to drive?
I love driving this car, its almost like driving a car from the Fast and the furius minus the nitrousoxide blast. I also love blasting the radio/cd/Ipod
and i would recommend this car for anyone who wants a custom ride. This car has TONS of optionsSep 25, 2008

This car handles great. The 5-Speed manual transmission is awesome. The hydrolic clutch is easy and engages pretty high. This car is so easy to turn into a tuner car. It's pretty easy to add a turbo. It's pretty slow from the factory but it's got tons of potential. It's affordable too! I bought mine with 25,000 miles on it for 16k which was great. It's really good on gas too!Aug 02, 2008

I love how it's made for modding and there are a lot of companies that make parts for the car. It can be whatever you want it to be and its cheap and made by a reputable company: Toyota! Performance wise, it's alright, but there are many companies that make turbo kits and suspension packages for it. The TC can be upgraded very easily.Jul 31, 2008

I love everything about it. It is a manual. The manuals are fairly quick. Automatics are slow. It has a touchy clutch. Has good low end torque. Has a very good power band range. Very fun to drive. It would be nice if it could handled turns a little better.Jul 31, 2008

No dissapointments. All around good college car. It has great gas mileage, good sound system (even tho i added aftermarket sub) and no major problems with the motor. If you are a college student or you like sports cars this is a sweet car to own. Test drive one and you will see what i mean.Jul 28, 2008

Love the moonroof and the sunroof! I like the handling- it is awesome. Also gas mileage is great. It also rides very smooth, makes minimal if any noise and is roomy for a 2 door touring coupe. People actually dont mind sitting in the back! Also the hatchback is awesome.Jul 27, 2008

Like: comfortable inside, dual moon-roof, hefty power but not too fast, comfortable, quiet when not getting deaf by my stereo, quick and auto-up/down windows, all glass top makes it easier to wash, everything goes off only after opening door. I still get compliments on it. It's poppin.
Dis-like: 20-22MPG since I drive a lot of city. Large and heavy door hard to get out of tight parking spots. Good looks and personalized license plate make it hard to go around discretely.Jun 12, 2008

For a car that is less than $20,000, the tC is a pretty impressive little hatch. It has a good blend of performance, comfort, design, build quality, and attention to detail. It interior says “I want to be German”, not the “Hey look how cheap I am” that you get in other cars less than $20,000. The performance is pretty impressive, the car accelerates quickly, but don’t think you can beat every car that pulls up next to you. There is a strong surge of acceleration up to 5500 rpm and just noise from that point to the redline at 6200 rpm. The car grips very well and the steering feel very good (for a Toyota). When cruising down the southern California freeways, the tC has no problem braking form 80 to a stop and it stays flat in the process. If you are like me, get a radar detector, because this thing does not have a problem getting to its top speed. Unlike most other toyotas, MPG is not a selling point of the car, not that it gets bad gas mileage (it gets great gas mileage), it is just not the goal of this car. There is hop, you don't have to give up driving enjoyment to get good gas milage like you do in other toytas (yaris, corolla, prius, camery, prius)
The tC does not make any statements with its styling, it is elegant, an looks like something that would come from Germany. The Panoramic roof is great in San Diego, and the sound system is not half bad either. In addition you don’t feel like you are driving a low priced car. Some times you feel comfortable parking next to the Aston Martin parked in front of Morton’s Steak House.
The car has fairly good build quality, but there are some areas for improvement. The bad roads in Point Loma bring out the structural faults with the tC. Many bumps will send rattles through out the cabin, mainly near the hatch, and the glove box. The moon roof also lets you know that the chassis is twisting when entering a drive way diagonally. The manual transmission can be inconsistent sometimes, which can result in rough shifting form 1st to 2nd. It dents easy, don’t park in narrow spots.
Despite the faults, it is easy to look past them, especially at the price. Hey Its not a BMW, event if it somewhat tries to look like one. It is a fun car at a reasonable price, just keep your eyes in the rear view mirror.

I purchased this car new in '04. It has snappy acceleration and pretty good handling for the price. I recently purchased some Yokohama H4s tires and they improved the handling and smoothness significantly. Some of the interior pieces are not put together well, and there are some creaks from the plastic pieces. Some of the trim in the hatch has begun to fall off, and there is significant hatch oscillation with the windows down.Oct 31, 2007

Just bought '05 TC used 1 month ago. Brakes are feeling a little rough though. Oct 29, 2007
What problem initiates the "Maintenance Required" light to go on? I had my oil checked and that is OK. I had the tire pressure checked, and it was OK so I had him turn it off. Is it "off" permanently now? What else could be the problem be for this light to turn on?
fine all the way home. The engine light hasnt came on yet, has a new battery, terminals are clean and not corroded, ive had the car fir years and first tine its done this. Anyone have similar problems to give me an idea. 2005 scion tc, 2.4 auto everything stock except intake and exhaust.
My ex wrecked my car on the passenger front side. Well i had someone do some work and he welded something under there . Everytime I drive it , it sounds exactly like a car would before getting into a accident , like the loud screeching of the breaks . Should I try to get it fixed or sell it
