The 2004 Chevrolet Blazer was an old favorite nearing the end of a long run. With its attention focused on the high-end spinoff TrailBlazer line, not to mention the new Equinox SUV, Chevrolet made few changes to its pioneering midsize sport utility wagon.
For purists, though, the '04 Chevy Blazer provided rugged power at an affordable price. Its high profile and stiff suspension (remember, the 2004 Blazer was built on a truck platform) were popular with off-road enthusiasts looking for a 4WD that could stand up to tough terrain.
The 2004 Blazer was offered in three trims: LS, LS ZR2, and Xtreme. The ZR2 and Xtreme modes, available in two-door bodystyle only, targeted younger drivers with their sporty, flashy look. The basic LS level was available in both four-door and two-door bodystyles; buyers also had the option of four-wheel drive on the LS and LS ZR2 trims.

This car looks cool to people that hate what the new vehicles have evolved to. You 2 door throwbacks know what Im saying. When purchased new, it was very expensive if u consider that I could have bought a full size pickup for that price. But for me it has been a great 4WD utility vehicle. Gas mileage is no better than a 4WD pick up truck. I wish I could buy this vehicle new again. I would not like it IF I had passengers. Back seat entrance is a pain, even for packages. The foam inserts in the quarter panels must b removed! They harbor water and salt and cause rust. The window trim is plastic and does not do well over time, specifically around the rear quarter windows. The plastic get rough and turns kind of greenish. Feb 16, 2021

Chevy built this truck for many years. The V6 power is 180 HP for the 4.3. Later in production they added port fuel injection and counterbalancing. This is a sawed off 350 V8 and has been nicknamed the shaker. Even with balance shafts at idle this puppy vibrates the steering wheel. It has the ability to tow my snowmobile trailer with no issues. The best highway mileage I got was 20 mpg. Later models include a more durable 4 peed transmission. There is a 4WD high & Low transfer case. This is a full frame SUV and has good jacking points for service. The middle plug on the drivers side is tough to change as the steering shaft interferes with the access. Had to use an open end wrench and socket to change. Put in a platinum plug because this is a 45 minute affair. With snow tires this car is great. Around town it is thirsty. There is not much fancy here but you need to pay attention to the remote oil filter that is mounted under the front bumper for cooling. The hose from the engine block is prone to leak. It is necessary to check the oil first thing in the morning before start up. My engine used oil at a rate of about 1 quart ever 1,000 miles but it was impossible to read the level on the dip stick if the engine was started. Parts are reasonably priced. I sold the car at 120,000 miles. I added an aftermarket oil cooler for the transmission as I did some towing. Basically I can say I miss this car after I sold it. It was great for winter and the poor gas mileage was made up for as it was an affordable used car buy. Focus on the 2003, 2004 and 2005 as they have the port fuel injection. I always used a KN high flow oil filter as it put less pressure on the oil feed line to the front mounted filter. The underbody shrouds were easy to remove but it is a major event with the 4WD to change the transmission oil as the cross member has to be dropped to access the pan bolts. The 75 series tires are floaty if pushed but if you watch the inflation pressure the handling is good. This car is narrow and has a high center of gravity. It is not for a new driver. It does not do well in crash avoidance emergency maneuvers and performs poorly on tip over test sponsored by NHTSA. I coated the underside with oil mist to try and control rust. I dove this truck thousands of miles chasing the snowflake for snowmobiling and with Firestone Winterforce studded radial tires I can not fathom a better vehicle for winter driving (in the hands of an experienced driver)May 24, 2015

More dislikes than likes. Not too much power, too little for the poor fuel mileage to compensate for. Other than recent problems it did its job fairly and really no complaints about the 4wd. That actually works surprisingly well and haven't had any issues yetFeb 10, 2014

Other than the thermostat i do really like this vehicle. I hope it turns out to be a great buy. I can deal with the thermostat especially since it's easy to replace. I just hope it doesn't become one of those cars that needs something fixed everytime i turn around. It does drive great and i really like the size, you can put it in any spot you find. Apr 21, 2012

used when i got it, but it has more features than any car I have had since buying cars. It's easy to use head lights coming on automatic is a great feature. It does not have a v-8 but with fuel injection the start from stopping is still good.Oct 18, 2011

When I bought it I liked the looks of the vehicle and it was comfortable to drive. It was very reliable. Wasn't in the shop that much. Just the normal wear of brakes-tires. Replaced the fuel pump. I loved the way it handled on the Hwy. The maintenance cost and repair cost was fair.Sep 02, 2011

I really loved this SUV.Drives great. Had a Blazer before this one too. Just want to downsize, since I don't drive much anymore at my age. Very low mileage but keep it clean. Great for hauling garden stuff, your groceries, sports equipment, etc. in the back. No problems with the truck at all.Mar 11, 2011

Gets 22 miles to the galon! Handles very well. It has the 4.3L Vortech 5 speed. It could use a little more hores power. I love driving it, it will go anywhere i want it to. If you are looking for a suv i recommend a blazer ZR2!Aug 01, 2010

This truck delivers as promised. It has a stiff ride and likes frequent visits to the pump but returns decent reliability. The shade tree mechanic can service it easily as it is a full frame truck that offers good jacking points. Look for a 2003 to 2005 as they offer port fuel injection. ABS was standard and the motor likes to vibrate at idle but it pulls a 2,000 pound covered snowmbile trailer with ease. The later model trucks have a Corvette automatic and the 2 speed transfer case offers 4WD High and Low. Visibilty is good. Economy is 16-20 mpg. It vibrates a bit on the highway due to the short wheel base. GM opted for some good equipment including Billstien shocks. I like the fact that I can deactivate the 4WD system. Mine lives in 2WD mostly but with snow tires I consider it a snowmobile that will take naything that a New England Winter will throw at it. Good heater and air conditioner. The intro of the Explorer forced GM to improve this vehicle from bakes to power trane. The styiling is plane jane but the car is functional with a comfortable seat. Mine is a base model and all I did was add a transmission oil coller, new front hubs and a set of brake pads. I recommend this truck.Jul 20, 2010

Likes: Brakes quickly, has front, rear and side airbags, has needed very few repairs, exterior and interio ar in very good condition, cost is about average and maintenance has been low in cost per year, car is great for family outings!!
Dislikes: low MPG rating, but hey it is an SUV, acceleration is a bit lagging, not good around corners because of higher roof, constant rattles that mechanics can't find, but cause no lasting effects.Jul 14, 2010

Performance- Well, it's a Blazer, so it's not exactly fast. It has a very torquey 4.3L six cylinder that makes 190HP and 240lb/ft torque. With the custom air intake setup I had, it had a very noticeable increase in pull from 2500rpm to the 5800rpm redline. However, it gets a 2/5 in performance because it has a speed limiter at 97....we estimate that it has enough power to push itself to 115 at least, quite strong for a 5000lb SUV six cylinder.
Build Quality- most problems I've had with it were from the previous owner kicking it into 4 wheel drive while going 70 down the interstate...had to replace front driveshaft cause the splines were ground completely off. Just now at 98,000 it finally needed a catalytic converter. No biggie.
Appearance- its Pewter, mud/dirt doesn't show up.
Cost- It's cost me alot in minor fixes, but for the age it's doing well.
Fun factor- this thing is huge, but for it's size it's fun to drive. LOTS of space in the back and it'll haul most small/midsize trailers!Jun 22, 2010

I love my Blazer and would not trade it for the world. I've had it since 05 and only had to replace spark plugs, although now my engine light is on (not sure why), Haven't had any wrecks in it so don't kno how it will hold up in collisons. prolly not too goodAug 12, 2009

I absolutely love my 2004 Blazer Xtreme. Acceleration, braking, and handling are more than enough for this thing. Build quality is what you would expect from GM at the time. Interior and exterior look great! It gets pretty good gas mileage, maintenance is minimal. Fun to drive for sure!!Jun 21, 2009

I have a yellow one, ive only seen one other one in kansas so
far. i love it. so many people just stop and stare when i drive
by. it makes alot of noises in the dash, and i drive it about 20
miles a day back and forth to school but its worth it.
ITS HORRIBLE IN SNOW.

The 2004 Blazer ZR2 is a good truck, it has pretty good acceleration for a truck and rides pretty sporty, build quality could be better, because you hear squeaks and things, but most american cars are like that. I Have had three jeeps 2 Cherokees & 1 Grand Cherokee i like the quality and trim package and comfort of the Blazer much better,for the money its a much better deal.Handling is great makes you feel like you are driving a sport car it corners very well for a mid size suv.Dec 01, 2008

i love how my car sits up higher than most others but isn't up in the sky. its easy to modify the car because everything is accessible. i have a JL Audio sound system in it and it bumps hard because the car is only a 2 door and has very little excess space. Love it, but hate the gad mileage and how when something small goes bad it ends up costing hundreds. But, what else is new these days? The truck is built very well. The interior is fantastic quality, the engine is solid (the epic 4.3L can do no wrong), and i found out it can tow 5,000 lbs. its 4x4 unit is yet to be tested by me but i'm sure it's just as good as the older unit so it should be fantastic and unstoppable. the amenities are nice with a full power driver seat, full power sun roof that tilts up or slides all the way back, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise, and deep tinted rear windows.

no clutch. Throw out barring?
Recently after I put it in gear it makes a grinding sound when letting off the clutch. It's been happening for about 2 months. Suddenly I have no clutch and no pressure in Petal. I can still drive but have to time and shift accordingly. It's making a high pitched whine but seems to drive okay. Has my throwout bearing broken? There is no apparent hydraulic fluid leaks.......
