Excessive Play Steering Wheel
Hi. My 2002 LR Freelander 3 drs TD4 has got excessive play on the steering wheel. Is it because of the steering rack? Regards Wardi

Overall, the engine was not sustainable. Performance is so so. Not good on highway since the pickup required a lot of time. Maintainence cost is high.
Consider it was a fun 4W drive SUV. All in all, not recommended for the value.Mar 20, 2014

I dislike the most about the vehicle is that no one can provide a straight answer on the Check Engine Light issue. Assumptions do not get the car repaired if the problem is the Intake Manifold and not the other 20 possibilities on the diagnostics list. At what point will the code give me a straight answer ... Could it even be a wiring or computer issue causing the light to go on?Sep 05, 2013

It´s a 98' Land Rover Freelander with 87 bhp and reaches only 123 KM/H, IT SUCKS. he hasn´t got much power or perfomance ,it´s very slow, has a lots of space but it´s a horrible car.Nov 10, 2010

My Freelander is a total junker! Timing Belt needs to be replaced every 72000 miles! Factory timing belt costs $1000!I was driving on I-5 South in San Diego, then it started to overheat. Had A/C On full blast, assumed it overheated it. Then, i took it to the dealer and they said it needed a new Water Pump for $600, and new head gaskets for $1900! Refused and bought a RELIABLE hyundai santa fe for half the price! DON'T BUY ONE OF THESE CRAPBOXES!Oct 10, 2010

Its the 1.8i model and accelerates really well. For a landy the build quality aint bad but the interioir cud do wiv a few screws tightening. Like the look of it but nowhere near as nice as a disco or 90. Nae bad on fuel for wot it is apx 30mpg. Loads of fun to drive and will evem get me out of muddy fields when i ask it too. Aug 16, 2010

dont ever buy one, spend more time repairing it than driving. engine breaks every 45000 mile, parts are twice as expensive. despite landrover knowing their are loads of manufacturing faults like the rear window regulator and head gasket they are unwilling to help you fix them and just charge you for a new engine. that will break down as well in 45000 milesMar 08, 2010

MPG returs are pritty good for a permanent 4wd normal use im getting between 37 to 40 mpg obvisly depends if im towing. Best i've had was 44.5 Run down to Poole. With 3 adults and cases. And the Air con on (its on all the time actually by choice).. engine is 2lt Tubo Diesel the Rover engine not the BMW TD4 version Mar 01, 2010

The performance of this car is nice with a little
supercharger built into it. The handling of this car is
outstanding. The build quality is strong and put together
well and. The car is okay in the interior nothing special.
The cost of this car would be about $20-$35 to fill up the
tank and about $50.00 for maintenance. But if you want
to take it to the dealer then it goes from $50.00 to at
least $200.00. The fun factor of this car is it goes off-road
and also that it is prietty fast. The whole car costs about

The acceleration, braking, handling are all good points in a freelander. The build quality well it is well made.
The appearance the interior is nicer than the exterior but you might like it the other way round

good offroad performance, nice torque and what we in spanish call pique. long brakes and not so good handling.
Build quality, no so good for the mid latitudes, bad gas pump.
squeaks, sevral since it has many removable parts.
great loooks, everyone has to do with this car on the streets the interior and exterior design are on the otp of sports suv's
expensive car, though it doesn't consume much gasoline to be a good 4x4 at offroad conditions.

well to start with mine is a 1999 but they didnt have it in the
list. but it is ok reasonble power for a 4x4 and ecomamy is
good unless your in a rush. but i think when you look at the

This is a slow 4x4 but it's been extremely reliable with loads of space to chuck the welly boots and shotgun! Plus it's slowed me down from my Alfa Romeo days!!
I'm going to mount a bullbar on the front so I can collect all the cyclist without lights every evening!

this vehicle drives well it also looks good. the seats are very comfortable and supports the back well,the roof bar idea is an excellent one,with the electric windows,cruise control and air con it is luxury on wheels,its 2.5 v6 engine is powerful but very quiet and efficientAug 22, 2008

This was one of the first Freelanders on the road in June 1998. I had the 3 door 'softback'
I had always wanted a land rover and oved owing it but being the first of a new batch it was beset by problems.
This combined with the fact that the 'softback' was the most complicated convertible roof i've ever seen meant it was a bit difficult to live with.

good acceleration for a car over 2 ton. breaking is exelent.
it has needed a few repairs to the suspention.
interior is great with leather.outside paint work is a bit soft.

People don't buy these cars for the speed they go. Being the earlier natural aspirated diesel, the Freelanders performance is dismal, but so what? It can do what we ask of it, and look pretty cool at the same time. It'll happily cruise along the motorway at 70mph however.
Off road, it's pretty impressive. The only complaint is the poor ground clearance. You soon get used to the sound of rocks banging underneath. It'll go further than you'd expect though.
It's quite small inside for a 4x4. The back seats are cramped and the boot isn't the biggest. The seats are supportive though.
The engine is bulletproof and will go on forever. Shame the same can't be said for the rest of the car. Be prepared to spend a couple of grand every year just to get it through the MOT. Avoid the 1.8 K-series- the head gaskets go like they're going out of fashion.Feb 24, 2008

2002 Land Rover freelander
So I traded someone a bunch of tools for his 2002 Land Rover freelander S he told me it had a problem with the transmission so I brought it home towed it home I should say and took it for a spin around the block.it started up fine no check engine went into gear fine seemed like it had no problem s but while I was driving under 20 mph prob around 10 mph it suddenly felt like I threw it in park but did it intermittently then it would go again for about 30 seconds. And it would do it again.so I done a little research and found there are 9 solenoid valves that control the flow of fluids to for the transmission so I opened up the front of the transmission. Where the valves are and all of them were in range of the resistance chart I received except 1 it was 2.4 ohms when it was supposed to be 2.6 ohms will that make a difference in how it controls the vehicle I believe it was the 2-4 brake solenoid valve.thank you

Freelander 1.8 Petrol not starting
The car stopped turning over. An independent recovery agent representative said it is the Fuel pump. Given the instructions for removing the fuel motor were simple, I bought a new fuel pump and replaced it. Hayne's manual is rubbish for explaining and showing you how to to prime/bleed the air out. Fuel can be seen coming through the pipework into the fuel injectors, so fuel pump is working. Checked the fuel cut off switch too and pushed the red button. Also, checked the car immobilizer fob to see if that was affecting startup, and then tick over. The car will start, but cuts out straightaway. Appreciate ideas that I can undertake to resolve the issue(s) otherwise a home mechanic in Gloucester area.
