The 2002 Ford Explorer Sport continued to be overshadowed by its top-selling four-door Explorer sibling. It did appeal to people looking for a smaller, more maneuverable midsize SUV: the '02 Explorer Sport's 180-inch size was a little less unwieldy than the Explorer's 189 inches.
The small exterior size unfortunately translated into a less-than-generous maximum cargo capacity of 71.4 cubic feet. In the 'bigger is better' sport-utility market of the early 2000s, this wasn't too impressive. And Explorer Sport drivers couldn't even brag about their great gas mileage, with ratings of 15 city and 20 highway.
The 2002 Explorer Sport did offer a range of options packages, of which the most popular were the four-wheel drive and 'Leather Comfort' selections. Some people loved its casual-but-comfy interior, and it did garner praise for its handling.
But the writing was on the wall. Whatever market niche the Explorer Sport might have occupied was going to be usurped by Ford's newest SUV, the Escape, and the 2003 model year would be the Explorer Sport's last.

4.0 big block v6....and for a suv...it will move out. Cant wait to be done spending money on it...........got ALOT of room in the back for a two door suv, and plenty of room for subs..wish there was a bigger gas tank, cause the 4.0 is always sucking down gas. also looking forward to puttin flowmasters on it in the future.think it has over 200+ horsepower stock....already got the k and n filter, so i'm good to go...Nov 27, 2009

I guess it looks ok but it gets terrible gas mileage and there are too many quirks! For one the stock tires suck, I squeak around every corner. I always feel like it is about to flip over too. It is quite slow to boot!Sep 10, 2009

This SUV is pretty good. I enjoy driving it. It is actually quite fast too. Believe it or not, i have beat a Mitsubishi Lancer once, that was cool.
Another cool thing about this truck is its ability to drift. Caution, do not try to do prolonged drifts or 90 degree turns. Remember... It is an SUV, not a sport's car.Apr 04, 2008

The Ford Explorer Sport caught my eye with its revised look for 2001. Especially with the new options that came with a 2-Door SUV including moonroof and a sound system from Pioneer with an in-dash six cd changer.
Also, after driving around the average gas mileage is shockingly 19-20 mpg.Feb 06, 2008

The Explorer Sport had great exterior styling, but (as whappens with many american cars) the interior was a bit poor, and rear seats were quite uncomfortable. It's short wheel base provided good handling but ride was quite jumpy. Great for fooling around off road.Jan 05, 2008
