A whole new Audi A4 introduces itself in 2002. Almost indistinguishable on the outside from the Audi A6, the 2002 A4 is longer, with more interior room, more rounded edges, and longer roofline. A new chrome-edged grille and flush handles and trim maintains the upscale classiness that you find in all Audi models.
Still available as either a sedan or a wagon, the 1.8, 4-cylinder, turbocharged 170-hp engine is the same. The 2.8 engine has been replaced by a stronger 3.0-liter, 220-hp V6 with 221 lb-foot of torque. Both the 1.8 and 3.0 are available as either a front-wheel drive or AWD quattro. New standard features are added in 2002, including dual climate control, an electronic stability program, anti-skid system, and six-CD changer. This is in addition to the already standard ABS, cruise control, power front passenger's seats, and leather trim. Five-speed manual is standard, with a 6-speed manual available in the quattro. The interior of the 2002 A4 has been redesigned to give more legroom in the back, and it still boasts the largest trunk in its compact class.
Also new in the 2002 Audi A4 is the optional CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic transmission, which gets better fuel economy and better acceleration performance. It has been around for a while, but never matched with a large V6 engine. With an electric clutch, it should rev immediately to the optimal RPM and move seamlessly through the gears, although it takes some getting used to. Owners either adore it or find it awkward. The CVT is not available in 2002 quattro models.
Owners love the new 3.0 for the extra power that doesn't sacrifice a smooth, quiet ride. The 2002 Audi A4 also has plenty of strength to tackle mountains, and the quattro is always sure-footed in rough weather. The CVT gets mixed reviews, legroom still suffers in the back, and there is some mention of excessive wind noise. But the A4 is a popular choice for its style, practicality, raod-hugging handling, and excellent driveability.

I bought this car new in 02. It now has 240K miles and still runs, drives and handles much like it did when new. Consumes no oil. Synthetic oil is a must. Keeping up with the maintenance will go a long way to keep it going strong. Still, there will be annoying things happening all the time. Stay on top of them. My ex wanted the car when we split up. After only six months of her running cheap gas, ignoring all the maint, check engine light and a bad coil pack. It finally left her stranded. I traded (Mazda5) with her and spent several hundred dollars and several days getting it back in shape. That was at approx 140K miles. I have since put in a new clutch, 3rd timing belt, front wheel bearing, new radiator, new wheels, new front axles, new brake rotors (replace brake fluid every 2 years). Great car for DIYers. Or a great car for the mechanic's purse if you own one and don't have a set of metric tools.Sep 16, 2014

This is a German beauty all wheel drive completely dependable, ever science i bought it all I've spend on it is the usual...... Gas and Oil changes, has no problems getting around as i tend to travel 4hrs at least once a month, it does use some gas but not as much as you would think for an all wheel drive. The tires grasp to the asphalt in such a good manner that the travel is completely smooth. Love it.Aug 14, 2014

This car is fun to drive. Zips in and out of traffic with no problem. Steady and powerful pickup for a smaller car. The overall look and feel of the vehicle is exceptional.
My only true gripe is the maintenance costs. My opinion is for older model Audi's generic, cheaper parts should be available. I know it's a luxury car but it's not Ferrari. Providing more economical parts options will entice more people to buy a used Audi. This is a common complaint of the Audi brand.Oct 31, 2013

The best car during winter. Appearance is really hot inside and outside this car. I suggest to buy electronic chip to obtain more performance from is engine. In fact, it's a fun car to drive but lack of performance. Don't even think to make donuts during summer except on slippery surface.Nov 07, 2010

Quick off the line. The AWD is awesome. Looks very good but doesnt turn heads unless you see me in the drivers seat. LOL About $40 dollars for gas sucks but worth it. Fun to drive on highway. And overall i have no trouble with it.Mar 03, 2010

APR Tuned is the best thing to happen to a turbo audi, 17"
rims accent the Kumho exsta AST rubber, can almost drive up
the side of a building in the winter, but cant squeel the damn

This car is very good when driving fast, also is very nippy due to having 150 bhp. All weel drive so you can't really come of the road. Also very spacious so 4 people can travel for large distances easilly.Sep 24, 2009

Performance- Accelerates like a bat out of hell under boost.
Build Quality- KICKS ASS
Appearance- I am in the city.... cabbies and old ladies can't park or make u-turns...:-( dents on both fenders.. one from a cabbie one from an old lady...
Cost of Ownership- $$$ only 2 Dollar signs on a scale of 5.. .but if you maintain it it will last forever.

Love the car, build quality and performance. The only thing is that in the city, it sips fuel like V8 (15-17mpg) but on long distance travel we'd get 28-30mpg. I just never got the chance to blast the car and test out full acceleration etc. Too many cops and the roads in Michigan was NOT good. Lastly, I wished that I got my wish list option which is Sports suspension. Also lack of electrically operated seat was a minus. This was an option for the 3.0 V6 version. It wasn't bad for fun. Try full-acceleration. you may feel like pulling your body from back. Especially has a good mpg as a Turbo car. Also quattro runs nice on the snow.

6 speed manual. its hard to find for the 6 cyl 3.0 quattro.
.most of them are triptronic. Have more torque than the
regular 1.8T.

Everything about the car is awesome. Great acceleration, comfort yet sporty. Loving the S4 rims painted black. Has some bad cost of ownership though, but the fun factor really takes over. Overall I would recommend to own the certified pre-owned RS4. That ought ot be much more fun, but this already suffice. Jan 31, 2009

Diesel is amazing giving that driver pleasure. The only bad thing is the regular servicing needed to maintain the vehicle. The seats are both comfortable for long trips or racing through the traffic. Fuel consumption is ideal and fits in great with a persons budget. Another great thing is repair costs are quiet low.Oct 09, 2008

If God made a car that needed to handle capably in dry weather and wet weather, as well as on snow or ice, and wanted it to have room for child seats, and look good and remain comfortable...this car would be it. Many people don't realize that there is a distinct difference between Torsen technology and ABS- or Traction Control-based AWD systems. I drive on icy and snowy roads in rural zones for months each year, and my experience is that Audi is more stable and reliable than any other AWD system I have entrusted my life to.Oct 02, 2008

the car handles like a goddess! No repairs needed in over 100k miles, unfortunately the transmission slips a little. And at 32 mpg it has class and good fuel economy. With a inline 1.8L 4 cylinder engine with a 5v supercharger, it makes light work of accelerating from 0 to 60.Jul 13, 2008

A very safe and stable car. Amazingly fun to drive. With the 2.0 lt petrol engine it
is fast enough to get upto 0-100 km/h in less than 10 seconds (9.6 to be exact).
Interior quality is awesome. The tiptronic transmission technology is so well-

A little underpowered with the 1.8T but the AWD made it through the worst that New England had to offer and with the 5-speed it was plenty of fun. A chip upgrade took care of power concerns and then the 540 replaced it.Dec 21, 2007

2002 Audi A4 Quattro will not shift out of Gear!
I have an Audi A4 Quattro with automatic transmission and it will not shift out of parking, the traction control light stays on when i turn the car on, the brakes seem very loose and also the light by the gear is always off. Do you maybe know what the problem might be? If anybody can give me some help i would really appreciate that. I need to fix this problem as soon as possible because i need my car to go to collage!
