After a year of significant revision, the Mitsubishi Eclipse returns with minimal change for 2001. Highlights this year include a standard rear spoiler and child seat anchors.
The trims levels are unchanged in 2001. Buyers may choose between the base RS, the mid-level GS or the powerful GT. Alloy wheels, air conditioning, a CD audio system, power window and power door locks are standard across the board.
The new Eclipse lineup does not offer a turbocharged or all-wheel drive variant. The RS and GS are both powered by a 2.4 liter inline four, producing 154 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. The GT upgrades to a 3.0 liter V-6, which delivers 205 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque. All models are available with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, but the GS and GT get a manual shifter. Fuel economy is estimated at 23/31 mpg with the four cylinder and 20/28 mpg with the V-6.
The Eclipse has been praised by consumers for its durable engine and transmission, stylish interior and exterior, strong fuel economy, reliability, and the Infinity audio system. Several reviewers tout the Eclipse ride quality and handling as class-leading, but uneven roads can cause some noticeable intrusion.
Owner complaints include a lack of interior room, both headroom and in the backseat, and a lack of power in the four-cylinder models.

love everything dislike the cost of parts needs more power in a big way other then that if i had more money i would but more then one love this car and would never get rid of it its one of the best rigs i have ever had bar none.Oct 08, 2012

It is a I4 so its slow and dosnt have a lot of get up and go. It handles
alright could use some suspension upgrades. It is decently fun to drive it
is manual so it feels good to keep the revs up around a corner. Hasn't
needed to many repairs so far. I like the styling, my model came with a
small spoiler which I know does nothing for performance but it actually
does make the car look better. Good gas milage and not a lot of

accelerates great 210 horsepower 4wheel disk brakes are great, oem strut brace in the front handles awesome, only repairs needed were tires and a radio, one of the sexiest cars on the road still interior is good needs more room though, gas mileage is good for a v6 about 28 29 takes premium gas or wont run right, fun as hell to drive love it to deathMay 01, 2011

This car very nice and ran very well..The only
issue was the transmission was rebuild at 90K!?
Electronic ignition problem missed fire and top
of radiator crack. Those are the problem major

great acceleration, 210 hp, more than enough torque
only quality downfall is sound system rattles so much it blows the speakers
cheap to buy, cheap to own
25+ mpg
great car 2 drive anytime

Lots of top end speed but lacks the acceleration. Handles turns fairly well but lacks that fact that it can not drift. Cheap to maintain and very fun to drive. Parts are easy to find, usually, and quick install, usually....Oct 01, 2009

Its a blast to drive...I wish the build was better (more feeling to the ground) but Ive modified mine ...(cold air intake exhaust headers etc..) but other than that its a great car. Great starter car for those who want a kick but don't want to break the bank. Overall I'd recommend this car to anyone who wants to have fun driving and turn heads in the process.Sep 17, 2009

Love the power of the engine and the first 3 gears are quick, dont like the engine design. Love the body style except the front bumper, it could be more aggressive. Just to drive and own its an expensive car but its made up for how fun it is to drive.May 29, 2009

It is my first manual so I've had a lot of fun driving it. Looks good, has some rattling at highway speeds. performs well for a 4 cylinder. Good beginner car to learn to drive stick. clutch replaced at 70,000mi. no major problems.Jan 20, 2009

The 3rd generation Eclipse is a great line of cars. Getting into one is like sitting in the cockpit of a fighter jet. All the controls and setting just surround you while to simply enjoy the ride to heaven and back. These cars are just so addicting, I love them so much that I want to go get another one.Nov 21, 2008

I really like eclipses. I like the way the body of the car is designed, how low it sits, the little grooves it has on the sides of the doors, etc. I really like the fact that it's a car that you can do a lot of work to on the body for a car kit, give it better exhaust, tail lamps, theres just so many things you can do to it to make it look slick. It's quite peppy when it needs to be, but my transmissio went out on it with 87,000 miles and cost me a whopping $2200.00 to fix! You do gotta watch how you drive them, because the transmissions on them do wear down quickly. Overall I think they are great cars, they even seem to handle well in quite a bit of snow! Oct 29, 2008

I love the exterior, very sporty and reminds me of a shark. I love having the antenna in my widow. I love having the automatic stick. Pickup isn't the greatest. My sunroof is off the track & it would cost $500 to fix... but it still works. Gas mileage is amazing. I get 375 to 400 miles per tank (16 gal). car has been very dependable. Is a blast to drive. Low end torque is not that great but once it hits around 60 it starts to hit its stride. It looks wonderful and gets great gas mileage. Parts are cheap and total cost of ownership is very acceptable. Would recommend this car to anyone.Aug 05, 2008

Third gen eclipse is solid, well built, and has more than enough power stock to get you running off the line. Aftermarket support is pretty good, still a few pieces lacking, needs definite attention to detail. Most parts need to be fabricated, and the steering is a little loose. The sporttronic transmission is a breeze, and it's just a fun ride. Not a hardcore following, but then, being original is the key.Jul 16, 2008

The car is overall easy to drive. It's got great handling. The rear window is angled weird, so it's hard to see out of it. Reversing is difficult and you have to use your mirrors more than usual. The seats are more comfortable than earlier models, but the backseat is still a pain.Apr 04, 2008

The Car was quick after some modifications, but it broke down all the time. The transmission went out after about 60,000 miles. The serpentine belt and pulleys kept flying off. Feb 02, 2008

NEW FUEL PUMP IS NOT TURNING ON FOR MY 2001 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE 2.4L
I just bought a new fuel pump for my 01 eclipse. Now I put everything back together like it was and put the key to the on position to see if at least the pump turns on, but I didn't hear any humming at all, so I didn't try to start it. I have only 1/8 of a tank of new gas in the car. I'm going to at least fill it to 3/4 of a tank and see if the pump is cycling, if it doesn't would it be a fuel pump relay? If so where would the fuel pump relay be located? Thank you.

Why will it not start?
I just replaced my harmonic balancer and both belts on my 2001 eclipse gt 3.0 v6 it ran fine for 2 or 3 days no it will crank over but not start what could be the problem
