BMW built a new generation of its popular, M3 sports coupe in 2001. The new, E46 engine replaced the E36 platform of prior models and delivered 333 horsepower from a 3.2 liter inline six cylinder engine. The new engine shared just five percent of its parts component with the old engine.
Some buyers, however, chose to wait for the 2002 M3 when BMW added the clutchless, sequential manual gearbox. But added features made the 2001 model one worth owning. Another notable addition was the new Dynamic Stability Control which, when combined the new variable M differential lock, made for superior handling on slick surfaces.

Decent for the year it is. Hopes for more because it’s a bmw but overall what was expected. Noticed some oil leaks. Needs rear brake job.could use some body work, chips in number found as if they maybe previous owner hit a bump a bit to fast because suspension felt a bit harsh as well. Needs work but with patience and work could be a good car.May 05, 2021

Coolest car i've ever had. So desirable to many. Very powerful, great
brakes and handling capability and fuel efficient. This car brought racing
and luxury and style into one. Very fun to own, and great for picking up

By far the best car I've ever owned! The performance is unreal.. 3.2 ltr straight 6 with 346BHP, 0-60 in 5 seconds! This car is so much fun to drive and it sounds amazing. Only downside is fuel consumtion, you can watch the gauge go down as you plant your foot on the loud pedal...!!Oct 03, 2010

Performance - acceleration - trimmed and almost 400 horse powers
Build Quality - great overall
Appearance - Laguna Seca - black leather, Harman Kardon stereo, GPS, TV etc
Cost of Ownership - ...expensive
Fun Factor - is this car fun to drive? Best Ever!

BMW M3 GTR RACE VERSION!!! Car is amazing. Love it. Beat out a Porsche in ALMS. V8 engine, hauls ass. Even the regular m3 is a beast, ask Taylor, he knows wsup. Hella bank but its worth it for this beauty! Nov 10, 2009

Too much fun for words. It's performance is amazing. BMW's can have expensive repairs but the looks are definitely what sets it apart from the competition. The E46 body style remains one of my favorites - Especial fond of the real-glass rear window.Aug 17, 2009

It's soo fast and gorgeous!!!! Build quality is excellent, it's a 2001 and no major problems. It is definitely very fun to drive especially at high speed lol As I said the acceleration is great I'd love to try it on a track but some ppl wont let me lolJan 22, 2009

I'm a bit biased coming from a Lotus but the M3 really
is a decent car. It's not the fastest, not the best
handling, doesn't provide the best feedback, etc. But it
DOES give you a good all around experience and is

Can't fault it really, it's a solid car. It has changed my mind about german cars, the best thing is the sound of the engine, but could do with more power!! But it's not bad on petrol so can't complain that much. Maintenence costs are quite high, but this is to be expected.Sep 14, 2008

high maintenance. dont get one unless you can afford to keep up with it all.
but other than that its a prety fun car aside from it being kinda heavy for what im use to.
either e36m3 or s2000 next.
If you have to get an m3, just get an 01, 02 M coupe so you can have the same high revving engine. But then you dont get the recall of the rod berring so I guess either way your screwed. Its a piece.Jul 28, 2008

Im looking for a 2001 or so M3. Why does it seem every one for sale either has a SGM transmission or is a convertable?
I want a hard top with a manual transmission! Is that to hard to ask?! If you have one and are thinking about selling it LET ME KNOW!!! I sold my 1995 m3 to upgrade to this but im thinking it might be a while before i own a car again.
