So we wanted a car that could handle 3 kids, a dog and my wife and I. The car had to have a 3rd back seat so we could carpool kids and their friends to school and activities. The landcruiser fits the bill.
Wonderfully elegant interior, great handling, room for 7 people and can deal with any weather you throw at it (and I mean any weather). We live in the new england area and get upwards of 3-4 feet of snow at a time and this car handles amazingly well in snow/ice - better than my audi - for that matter.
On the topic of interior finish, this car, while an suv, has an interior on a par with most luxury sedans. The leather seats are really stunning and the controls and dashboard are very nicely appointed.
as for reliability - we have had this car for 6 years now and have had very few problems. The air conditioner needed to be fixed this spring but other than that we've had no problems at all. I've read that these cars really do last for upwards of 125k miles.
While built as an suv and certainly not small, the Landcruiser handles like a much smaller 4 door luxury sedan. The ride is very smooth. The steering quite responsive and the pick-up is impressive. Overall it is a very enjoyable car to drive especially on long trips.
As for cons - the price tag is certainly steep. I think you can pick up a used 2000 landcruiser for say $20k and at that price I think you will be happy with the purchase. The other downside is the gas mileage - avg. 15 mpg.
overall, our family loves this car and we look forward to many more years of reliable usage.

The 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser is perfect , everything you need without the high tech electronic’s . 300,000 miles and purrs like a kitten . The difference in the Toyota Land Cruiser and other top luxury SUV’s is the Toyota is designed to be off-road the others are just capable of it . Jun 13, 2021

Gas Milage is , well, very low for today's standards.... but this is a given for all year model Land Cruisers.
I have taken this Land Cruiser everywhere in Florida ... in all road conditons, as a Radio Systems Engineer.
Much off road sand and mud and flooded roads. I have never been stranded for any road condition or due to a breakdown. I have always made it to my destination , with confidence and ease.Sep 24, 2013

I've always wanted one of these cars and really glad I found one. It has about 130K miles on it and just keeps on going with minimum repairs. About the only repairs are normal things that wear out in time, ie, battery, timing belt, water pump and starter. The bad thing about replacing the starter is that the mechanic had to take the whole top of the engine off to access it. If you have someone replace it, make sure he puts in a new set of gaskets rather than re-using the old ones. The whole starter replacement with gaskets was $674. I'd recommend a TLC to anyone looking for an excellent SUV.Nov 10, 2012

After 8 years of sun abuse, weather, hail, bugs, insects, 100+ degree weather in the summer and below 32 in the winter, this truck still looks like it did on the first day, minus some wear on the seats. Knowbody knows it is 8 years old, but me! Such a great truck, never stops.Jul 29, 2008

Plenty of room. Better vision, ride, handling and braking than a GU Patrol. Brakes really are
excellent for such a large vehicle, even with large tyres.
Driveline is much weaker than a Patrol though. Front diff in particular has a very weak
crown wheel and pinion. Very poor of Toyota to downgrade the front diff from the 60
series.
Rear diff, gearbox and transfer-case are all strong. Factory LSD is not as good as the
Patrol's.
Fuel capacity is excellent, and with a long range tank you can get over 270 litres.
General quality control is excellent. After 8 hard years, all the electronics still work
flawlessly. No rattles or squeaks. Great dust sealing.
Rear shock positioning is poor. Being in front of the axle housing, they cop damage from
stones off the front wheels. You need stone guards for them.
Engine (1Hz) is fine unless you give it too much boost. Anything over 10psi will eventually
get you cracked pistons, and cost you a fortune. Seems the 1Hz is not as strong as it used
to be.
Overall, I love driving the car and I'd probably buy another, but I miss the bullet-proof
durability of my old Patrol. I think the Landcruiser is a better car with better on-road
behaviour, braking, vision and space, but the Patrol is a stronger 4WD.
If Nissan can improve the interior space, driving position and vision in the next Patrol,
then I'd consider changing.Apr 23, 2008

The wife says that she'll devorce me if I ever sell it. We both love it. I goes where we want to, and them some. We have converted our to run on LPG. Loaded it with all the serious off-road accessories. (that's not our in the pic)Dec 24, 2007
When you turn the key the dash lights don't come on. No power to anything. Brand new battery 2 months ago. 13 volts on the battery. Is there a relay that energizes when the key is turned? It's 25 degrees in the garage. I sprayed some lube in the key ignition in case the tumblers may be hanging up, didn't help.
