It is a sports coupe, after all, and people buy sporty cars for two reasons--looks and power. The 2-door Dodge Avenger already had great style and a body that drew comments and envious stares. So why would any model of Dodge Avenger ever come with just a four-cylinder engine?
Sure to make driving enthusiasts happy, the 1999 Dodge Avenger makes amends by throwing out the 4-cylinder in mid-year models and making the V6, 163-horsepower engine standard in both the base and ES versions. Previously, the V6 was only offered as an option on the base model as part of its Sport Package.
The Sports Package still exists, adding ES standard features, such as air conditioning, rear spoiler, 16-inch aluminum wheels, and power windows and locks, to the base version. Aside from some new colors and next-generation dual air bags, the standard V6 is the only major change for 1999.

This is a gem, a forgotten Dsm car. Not a super car, but a very good looking and solid ride. Related to dodge stealth, Mitsubishi eclipse, eagle Talon. But not the aftermarket support like the rest. Runs good when kept up, good on gas, a very sleek design missing from todays cars. A better looking car then the newer named Avenger. Hoping to find me one of these again. Car accelerates very fast, as well as stops almost instanly. Handles like race car.
I bought this car used so the build quality isn't the best, it's got a small dent in the driver door, and a missing inner fender well on the passenger side due to a collision, but has been replaced.
The car (in my own opinion) looks mean, fast, and aggressive. I've always wanted one of these and it just blows my mind that its sitting in my garage.
Gas mileage is so-so. average of 18 mpg, depends on my driving lol.
This car is VERY fun to drive. It's wayyy more than i origionally expected. Oct 06, 2010

I have a 1999 avenger es its green with 17" motegi racing wheels. handles like a dream.the car is cute. very under powered.its a reliabale car even after a collision with an expedition.the brakes are great.but not on wet roads. the door handles do break they are made of plastic.stupid move. my car is great wouldnt trade it for anything.if you take care of it .it will be good to you.Dec 19, 2009

Performance is only average to slightly below average. Good gas mileage and handling. But poor acceleration and braking. Engine is undersized for the weight of the car. Appearance and styling is nice and cost of ownership is minimal. Original sound system is nice but general overall quality is poor. Constant rattles and squeeks that are easily drowned out by the stereo.Nov 21, 2009

Good build quality at least on mine other then the normal
rust and wiggles
I love the body style hence the buy
It was only 2k cash a year or more ago and I've put
almost 23k miles on it already gas ranges from 18 to 22
depending on driving ;)

Watch out for the shaft in the transmission. It was a recall but
if you did not take the extended warranty on your used car
they will not repair anything. Mine blew out the side of the

This car was a mini viper, but I would have loved having it rear
wheel drive and a six speed manual... It also didn't have any
aftermarket performance enhancement parts for the six
cylinder! It was frustrating, so I went with 19" Axis
S7evens... Awesome set of wheels for this car...
Unfortunately she blew a tie rod at 80 in a tight left hander...

It has very good handling, it looks like a sports car, it gets great gas mileage and I do the maintenance myself. It is a very fun car to drive. Performance could be better but thats what aftermarket is for.Jul 21, 2009

I love the speed and the pick up my car has with its v6 engine. Its kinda old and worn out so it doesn't work to its full ability. But i hate the fact that i have put over $800 dollars in to it for maintenance. I love my car because I am lucky to have such a good car for my age and it didn't cost me much at all. this is a very Family friendly car, though its sporty coupe body isn't great for getting friends in the back seats, there is still enough room for your kids, the power is noticable but not over the top, road noise is minimal those in the front seats will find they have more than enough leg room for a 6'5" person. over all the car is strong safe and fun while being conservative and reliable. Starting up
I have a 1999 Dodge Avenger ES V-6. When I turn it over, it takes about 3 seconds of cranking before it starts up. during this time, it sounds like it's backfiring through the intake, but i'm not sure. The car has a brand new distributer cap and rotor, spark wires, spark plugs, and it has a K&N air intake... is there anything I can do to get the car to start up like a normal car and not backfire through the intake? And as far as backfiring, it's only once. It does one big pop and it starts right up. Thanks!
