What owners say
"Overall, owners of the 1999 Chevrolet S-10 express a mix of satisfaction and frustration. Many appreciate its reliability and performance, particularly praising its powerful 4.3L V6 engine and good handling both on and off the road. However, there are common concerns about rust issues, a lack of interior space, and brake performance. While some drivers find the truck to be a great value and capable of lasting well with proper maintenance, others feel it could use improvements in power and comfort, especially for family use."
Excellent truck. Didn't really have any major break downs with it, did put oil cooler lines on it though, and a set of tires in the three years I owned it. other than that, just oil and filters, routine maintenence stuff, ran into trouble when ordering a tranny filter for it though. needed to know if it was a shallow pan or deep pan. Figured I got about 17-18 miles to the gallon.
August 7, 2008Great truck on and off road. Especially off road! Easy modifications give the truck lot's of power and OK on the gas milage. Well balanced for hill climbing and great stability while air born. Suspension very durable and frame exceptionally strong. 4 wheel anit-lock disc brakes can stop the truck going 45 mph in less distance than a Las Vegas intersection. Wish that it came in leather. Also wish the extended cab had room for a child seat. We would have kept it if it did : (.
July 30, 2008I am very impressed with the Extreme I would buy another one any day. My wife says she wants me to build her one so that is saying something. But of course she wants one for the fuel Mileage.26+ MPG and Very Reliable truck.

June 14, 2014Interior layout and ergonomics are well thought out and tastefull, very rigid frame so truck handles as well as most sports cars, exterior styling is very attractive with suttle attention to detail. Other than the lack of brute power under the hood, my overall impression is quite impressed!
January 11, 2008Im currently on my 7th S10, its a 1999 ZR2 AUTO 4.3. Of course this one is barely stock but it has been good, chassis+block has over 200k, a lot of bSic electronics remain. I built the Transfer case but all the vacuum and driven electronics are 23yrs old. Just did the first water pump(upgraded to rebuild able billet impeller cts-v model) but other than a hundred coils/icms and a handful of small sensors here and there its been good. My last ls rwd was lifted in 35s but bone stock and had 300k when I gave it to my nephew. Ive had a couple xtreme w/both nv1500,3500+4l60s in 2.2 and 4.3 ALL great trucks. The 4.3 has its quirks but is an absolute WORKHORSE. Upgrade cooling and help it breath cleaner air(lose a few MOG but delete egr) and theyll last forever. A few guys on the forum have hit 500k on original engine (replaced or rebuilt trans) but even rebuild trans shipped nationwide less than 1k from b1trabsmission , local for 600. So theyre unstoppable in my book
October 8, 2023Extremely solid truck, gives the driver a good connection to the road, parts are cheap and common. I've always loved the way S10s look and they also have a wide array of aftermarket available. Interior is great. Insurance is cheap. Cab room doesn't allow for a lot of room for transporting people. 2 adults are comfortable but add a child and it becomes tight, real fast. 3 adults is fairly uncomfortable. A lot of sandbags are need for winter traction on 2WD. 2.2L I4 is slow to accelerate, 4.3L V6 is much improved in that category.
January 6, 2008The engine on this vehicle is great very reliable. The brakes are a weak point and the suspension wears out quickly. The interior is well laid out just a little on the small side. Is very prone to rust in the usual spots on third door, fender wells and cab corners.
May 25, 2012A good Value in an older truck. Very long running w the 4.3l v-6. Buy carefully as with any older truck Rust can be an Issue!
April 29, 2020For a truck has pretty damn good handling and acceleration. Braking is so so could use an upgrade. Gas mileage is not so good get around 18 when i drive normal and about 25 when im driving like a grandma thats 50/50 city/highway
July 29, 2010good build quality, never broke down, not rust. decently fast for a 4banger, liked to understeer, could have used disks all the way around. got 30 mpg. it eas eh to drive, it didnt like to oversteer. needs an LSD from the factory and some better sway bars
