The Nissan Altima was all new for the 1998 model year. It was drastically restyled, featuring a longer, leaner look compared to the previous rounded appearance. The suspension and drive train were revised, and passengers got more legroom in the back. By this point, the Altima was Nissan's number one vehicle.
The 1998 Altima came in four trim levels: the base XE, the midrange GXE, the sporty SE, and the luxurious GLE. The GXE was the most popular model, and the GLE came standard with leather seating and a power driver's seat. All Altimas in the lineup shared a 2.4 liter, 150 horsepower four cylinder engine. Fuel economy is 21/29 mpg.
Drivers like the 1998 Nissan Altima because it is a good value. They say it gets good gas mileage, has plenty of available amenities, and have a surprising amount of power for a four cylinder. Some drivers find the seats to be uncomfortable, and the Altima's new look is often criticized.

Overall this car is perfect for any beginner looking to start driving, or in my case the daily commute to and from work. The audio system in the car does leave something to be desired, but all in all it is a comfortable, and affordable way to get around.Mar 07, 2015

Just as I was pourin my heart out making sure this car would be trouble free, the wife buys a Toyota Prius, and this one was donated/scrapped when I wasn't there. Aluminum rims, GLE, the deluxe package. Stereo was good.Feb 03, 2013

Laggy throttle but a tank of an engine that will handle much abuse.
Truck engine, so it's not dragged down by extra weight.
It's almost at 200k with no major motor or tranny work *knock on wood*
The seat cushions will deteriorate after a while without any way to adjust the seat

nothing bad i can say about this car i love it. its been a great first car the only reason for wanting to get rid of it is its not my style. ive had for about 3 weeks and its a blast to drive! and not to mention the gas mileage! my mom hates it because with all the money i save on gas im always out driving with my friends Jun 27, 2011

This car has been around for 12 years and was still going strong until I was rear ended by a huge truck. The car crumpled relatively easily and I'm lucky to be alive. Had someone been in the wrong seat at the speed we were hit they would have been crushed as the truck was pushed into the rear left passenger seat.Nov 09, 2010

First car I owned, had it for 8 years and could not have asked for a better first car. Low maintenance, ran mobile 1 synthetic oil. 230,000 miles and still going strong..for being an automatic I still enjoyed driving it. Great brake performance, handling. Had the car detailed once a year so interior and exterior condition is good. Paint job needs to be waxed once or twice a year. As it was getting up there in mileage the car needed general repairs like a wheel bearing, etc but will still last a long time. Jul 12, 2010

Originally a California car. Car never let me down. Had to replace a leaking valve cover gasket (existing problem) then right before I sold it, it needed new brakes and it needed the alternator rebuilt (due to faulty battery). Very reliable, torquey engine.Jan 29, 2009

Its my car...I mean whats to say? I drive this thing into the ground. It's a 4 banger so it doesn't have much power, but I still like to pretend it does. It's a fun little car to drive, it gets pretty decent gas mileage and it runs like its supposed to. Now that I have a consistent job, I can treat it as well as it's treated me. You know what I mean? I love my car for what it's worth. Its never given me any real problems, and I appreciate that. Nissan knows how to do cars well. I'd recommend a new or used one.Aug 06, 2008

It's old and I just don't like it. I'm 23 and I'd like a new
car.; not a brand new car, but this ca was my
gramma's before she sold it to me and it looks like a
card an old woman would drve, and it's just not me.
The car is in mint condition. It just had a complete
body work check up, but I've outgrown it, and it's time
for a change

I love the 1998 Nissan Altima! When built, it had
the most powerful engine in it's class, and you can
definitely tell that when you drive it... except when
you run the air conditioner. :-P Braking isn't that
great--mine doesn't have power brakes or ABS so
sometimes you do need to put some effort into
stopping. As far as the interior, it feels EXTREMELY
spacious for the size of the car, and there is plenty
of leg and headroom for everyone. The seats are
comfortable and everything is well-planned and
functional. For the exterior, I have an SE so it has
really nice wheels and I love the spoiler, although
other trim levels of the car without the spoiler look
really plain. Additionally, this car has needed
nothing but regular maintenance and has had no
serious problems yet (I'm so proud of it), and even
with 116,000 miles, I still get 25 mpg. In the end,
this is one of those cars that you will get and love,
and I would like to add that since it was my first
car, I will probably be extremely loyal to the Nissan

ti runs well, dependeable, good fuel mileage, takes a beating, good acceleration for a four banger brakes and handles weel enough, most parts are factory, which often now need replaced, replacemant parts are very expensive, interior is not so good, good console styling, typical lines, not bad, will be replacing soon.Jul 18, 2008

Even after hitting a deer at 60 mph, I was able to drive the remaining 30 miles home at 3am in the morning. The radiator was toast, but the car never overheated.Jan 12, 2008

This car was overall pretty reliable and kind of fun to drive(5 speed). No major problems with it until I paid it off and the bushing around the axle in the transmission housing blew out, that was only $1300 to repair. Overall the car was in the shop much more often than my Lexus. Lots of money spent on repairs.Dec 20, 2007
