Timing belt keeps on breaking
I have my Mazda 323 protege which breaks timing belt time and again what might be the problem

My first car and love it, I have the base model, so no power locks, windows, mirrors, abs or cruise control. But, being a 5 spd manual transmission makes it so fun to drive. Keep basic maintenance and it will last long.
But make sure to maintain the car paint with polish and wax and proper wash, since I only did you basic $4-5 dollar auto car wash, my cars clear coat is peeling away.Nov 14, 2021

If you want a good car for basic transportation with low maintenance and operation costs, this is the answer. Good room inside and decent performance. Good mileage. Fun to drive. The car will keep on going if you do routine maintenance. Cloth interior held up extremely well. All wheels held alignment and the car was easy on tires. It has been very dependable and has a very forgiving clutch for teaching people how to drive a manual transmission. It is a very basic model and I Love that. I just wish it had cruise control, power windows and power locks with a key fob. And I wish I could afford to get the A/C working.I wish the " What did you mainly use this car for? it is a car that i have spent much money on and has nice body
kit and spoiler, 30ftpounds of torque, 350 hp engine and gets
28mpg very fast and quick for sporty riders, manual very fun

This was the car i owned the longest. Its seems forever i had it. Got it after i nmoved to florida. traded in the toyota for it. Good on gas and decent build in and out, Only real issue was how pedestrian it looked. No style or flairOct 29, 2009

As far as I can tell, this thing sucks compared to my 00 Corolla LE. But, it is definitely a solid sub 5K economy car. It is also definitely no more than a solid sub 5K economy car. I can wait to not have to drive it anymore!Jan 25, 2009

PERFORMANCE: the acceleration sucks does not have enough power to pass,or get out of driveway into traffic.the braking is good for a little car
BUILD QUALITY: it its starting to rust in the fender wells, has needed front rims replaced and transmission starting to skip at a 112,000 miles but when it needs to be fix it is expense and takes to long to get part, no room under the hood to do work even with just a wrench
APPEARANCE: styling is crappy
COST OF OWNERSHIP: gas milage is the only reason i keep the car 32mpg.

Aside from having an engine designed for economy (lacking on power) its got great gas mileage, looks great, rides comfortable, and works beautifully. I haven't had many problems with it. With the manual tranny, this car really isn't too bad to drive. I'd recommend this car to anyone that needs something good and reliable.Nov 25, 2008

I love my car in general! i get about 40 mpg! I was in an accident and she held up like a tank. The power at take off could be better but that is what you get with a 1.5 L engine. i have had this car for years, it now has 195,000 miles and climbing! no problems yet!Jun 25, 2008

After running my 1998 Mazda protage danngerously low on fuel I put about three gallons in and then drove about a mile and it shut off I first thought it was bad gas but it wasn't replaced the fuel pump the relay is working fine however it refuses to restart it will turn over like it is going to start but never fully engaged and stays running we have worked at this all day any suggestions

My 98 stalls when I put it in 'reverse' first...
Ok, so this is a weird one. I've asked dozens of people and no one has had an answer yet, I'm just really curious... FYI I have a '98 Protege. Here goes... If my car is parked somewhere for awhile, like while I'm at home or at work, when I go to back out of the spot, it often stalls within a couple seconds, even if I have it running for a little while I find a radio station or something. It only does it maybe 1 time out of 10 and more often when it's cold, though it's happened when it's in the 60s and 70s too. What's really confusing me is that it NEVER stalls when I'm in drive, and it never stalls if I'm driving THEN go into reverse, such as for parallel parking. ONLY if I go into reverse first. It's not a huge deal I guess, I can just put it in park, turn it off, and it turns right back on with no problem, but it's just kind of weird... Any ideas? PS: I love my car and all, but I'm not the most 'engine savvy' driver, so plain English please, lol! :-)

I heard a pop and now there is a grinding noise, what could it be?
I have a 1998 Mazda Protege LX standard transmission. I put the car in reverse and before it moved I heard a loud grindy pop noise. Now no matter what gear the car is in there is a grinding/ rubbing noise. It still moves though. I don't know what I broke on the car but if someone can help figure it out. I already have one car down I can't afford another right now.
