Volkswagen expanded the Jetta lineup for 1995 with the addition of two new trim packages, the Jetta City and the Jetta Celebration. Both came with a 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that was also dropped into the base Jetta, the Jetta GL, and the Jetta GLS trim packages. And both the City and the Celebration were stripped-down models with lowered sticker prices and a limited set of standard features.
Standard features for the Jetta GL included power steering, power brakes, power door locks, air conditioning, a rear window defroster, dual airbags, an anti-theft alarm system, and an AM/FM/cassette audio system. The Jetta GLS added power windows and a sunroof. A GLX package was also available. It came with a 172-horsepower V6 engine and such features as anti-lock brakes.
The Jetta's handling, roominess, and power were cited as positive points by drivers, but some also noted that their cars needed frequent repairs, which could be expensive.

I love how easy it is to work on the motor. Ours is still fully intact all trim and accessories still on the car. The 1.8t would be a better option if you want some extra oomph when you press the go pedal. Its a great daily driver and hasn't failed us even when the oil pressure sensor failed and we drove 40 miles with barely any oil and no indication of oil pump failure due to a small hole in oil pan. I don't recommend that but the motor is a slow and steady reliable. Its no tuner or racer but it'll get you to and from work with a little love and attention to oil changes belt changes etc. Gas mileage suffers a bit due to the power band of the motor and the gear ratios in the transmission. The low output in lower rpms means the car is geared to put you at 3100-3400 rpm @ 60 mph in 4th (automatic) or 5th (manual) on the highway. Not the best in class for mpg but its not bad at around 22-25 city/hwy. I personally love our jetta and as a mechanic this car is worth maintaining to reach over 350k miles. Dont have to baby this one but no hot rodding the 2.slow if you want it to last a while.Nov 04, 2014

With the supercharger the acceleration is really nice and fun. it could use some
brake upgrades, but over all handling is good. Build quality is good it does need
some work but it is a 1995 so it'll have that.May 11, 2013

Acceleration and top speed are quite impressive for a 2.0L, even the bottom end is really torquy. Only normal wear repairs have been needed in her 121,000 miles. Styling is awesome just the trim falls off because it was double sided tape from the factory. She gets 25-30 mpg but parts are kinda expensive due to being German. By far most fun car i have ever owned. May 08, 2012

Really nothing that I disliked other than the fact that the maintenance costs started to get out of control once the car broke 130,000 miles. I guess that's to be expected though when cars get that old. Other than that, I adored that car, and was heartbroken when I got rid of it.Jan 20, 2012

These cars are reliable, fast, fun, economical,
and cute. They can be left stock for an
economical sedan for a family or they can be
added onto as a fun sporty car for a young
driver. The only down side to these cars is
that there are a lot of them out there so it
makes them less valuable. Cost of ownership is
the cheapest I've had and it is the funnest car
to drive that I have owned. Mar 17, 2011

I got this jetta from a friend. Its a base model with none of the trimmings. Its rusty and slow. But it gets 30mpg and it a lot more fun to drive then i expected.
If i was gonna get another jetta it would have to be a TDI or VR6 model.Aug 26, 2010

This is my second 95 Jetta and I've loved both. The performance is good for a 2.0L and the mileage has been great -- mid-30s mpg on the freeway. Handling is good, brakes are fine. One annoying thing: fifth gear on my manual tranny is geared way too low. At 70 mph I'm revving at 3,000 rpm and the engine buzzes. Oh, and another thing: the timing belts are prone to going bad before you hit 100K miles. My first one lost its belt and it cost me $2,200 to fix because it ended up damaging the top end.
Build quality is pretty good, although my first had little interior parts falling off. Nothing terrible, just irritating. My second one is starting to rattle pretty good at 108K miles. No parts falling off, though.
I can say from experience that they'll keep you safe in a crash. I crashed my first and my kids and I were just fine. Air bags went off, so it was an instant total. That I bought another tells you how much I like the car.Jan 19, 2010

Basicly i love everything about my car ask anybody who knows me well and they will tell you the same. i love the shape the interior layout the simple 2 liter the sound system thats in it the brembo brakes i put on it and the kn air filter too
it accelerates very quick for only 120hp it hands great i was one of the only people not to go off the road going over the mountain during the winter
its very solid the only maintance it needs is only basic like brake pads or a filter
it was a little boxy until i put the spoiler on it that helped alot i also added a 97 grill because i like the 1 peice grill better that the 2 piece grill
it is AMAZING on gas it averages 35mpg between city and highway
if you have to chance drive one of these standard thoughJul 31, 2009

The jetta is a fantastic car. VW's are all good cars. I have owned alot of VW's. VW's are very well built cars that last along time. Iv'e had beetles that lasted as long as my Jetta. It's a shame that they quit making the beetle.Jun 15, 2009

I had this car for quite a while, only payed 1,100 for it so i got my

I rarely even change the oil (which is bad, I know) and I've never done much to it. Yet, here I
am at 238k+ miles and still getting 33-35 mpg. Car still handles like a dream. Original
clutch - pretty much original everything, actually. Changed exhaust twice, alternator once.
Hell, the original battery lasted 180,000 miles.Mar 29, 2008

Okay so the air conditioning didn't work. Maybe the interior had a few threadbare places....and maybe the bumper had a scratch..but it was my first car and the heat worked. And maybe the sunroof got broken too (thanks person in the school parking lot)Feb 20, 2008

I have a jetta 3 cli 1995 model . I had my crank cut and put on bigger bearings. When I started the car there was a huge noise inside the engine and when i push the clutch in then the noise ain't so loud what can the problem be
Our son bought a 1995 VW Jetta. As he was working on the vehicle he set off the anti-theft system. Now the car will not start and we have been unable to trace how to disarm it. The car did not come with any manuals or other information. Any information or help would be great.
