Good choice for a cheap, reliable family car. It's like driving a mini-tank and its longer than you realize when you look for parking. Parts can be hard to find. Overall an excellent value if you want something cheap and reliable.May 17, 2014

Bought the 940 for 500 bucks. Blacked out lights, put on exhaust (can) and got new tires. Car isn't quiet but isn't that loud either. But can't really complain because for 225k the car is reliable. Not an engine light on, or anything to complain about. All around fun little sedan. Just wish it was a 5 speed. Apr 25, 2012

The 940 is a great representation of Volvo's quality and safety. My
brother has owned two, and this particular one is his second. He's not a
performance person, so this car is great for him but bores me to death.
However, I've always liked the boxy Volvos since my family's first a
1993 850 GLT we got when I was four years old, so it's kind of hard-
wired! This one is kind of a clunker, but his first 940 was a tank!
According to its new owner, it has almost 300,000 miles on it at this
point and still runs like a champ! It survived his brutal driving style and
accident-prone nature, so it has my respect!Dec 02, 2011

getting the maintenance up to speed has been troublesome 200,000 miles. previous owner did not pay attention to detail, many little issues, latest , the stupid shift/ brake lockout, shifter will not go into park, last was brakes, next will be oil leakage ( probably the cam seal), then will follow the timing belt.Nov 06, 2011

The 240's and 740's get the cult status, but this car just keeps going and going. The 940 shares most of the mechanical heritage with those models, but adds a slightly rounder body and plusher interior. With this car you get all the legendary Volvo simplicity and strong mechanicals without the high prices. Mine was very well cared for and looks much newer than 17! Can I get help troubleshooting my 1994 Volvo 940?
though it has spark and seems to be getting fuel. It started sputtering on acceleration and wanting to stall. I found a bad wire and replaced it but the issue continued. The next morning I had a hard time starting it to do the repairs it ran a very short period. The fault code on the OBD_I shows 1 1 1 which is no fault, when pressed 3 times all systems seem to respond properly, I have changed the plugs, wires, fuel pump, fuel filter, timing belt and tensioner (have changed many timing belts before), fuel regulator, crankshaft timing sensor, it has compression of 120 120 112 120,
