The Volkswagen GTI, which was based on the popular Golf hatchback, received very few and very minor upgrades for 1992. It was still available in two versions -- the base GTI sports package, and the GTI 16V sports package with a more powerful engine.
About the only noticeable upgrade was the fact that the radio on both models turned off with the ignition key, so drivers no longer had to turn it off using a control knob on the radio itself.
The base GTI came with a 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder powerplant that generated 100 horsepower, while the GTI 16V trim package dropped in a 2.0-liter double-overhead-cam 4-cylinder engine and goosed horsepower up to 134. Both versions of the GTI came with a five-speed manual overdrive transmission as standard equipment; an automatic transmission was available as an option.
Standard features for the GTI included power brakes, power steering, bucket seats, alloy wheels, a rear window defroster, foglights, a tilt steering wheel, and a tachometer. The GTI 16V added Recaro seats and 15-inch wheels, among other features. In addition to the automatic transmission, optional equipment included air conditioning, a sunroof, and a cassette player.
The GTI got positive marks from drivers for its high-powered performance, its handling, its comfort, and its European styling. The Recaro seats and interior were noted as being particularly comfortable. On the negative side, drivers noted that repairs, when needed, could be expensive, and some specifically pointed out problems with the car's electical system.

I love this car with all my heart! its a mk2 so obviously there's some issues but its no big deal. The greatest thing about this car is that its stick! its also my first bought car, so what could be better than that???May 11, 2011

This car's got tons of power once you get it up to highway speeds. When you floor the gas, it's like a drug. You can't get enough of it. On top of that, it sounds nasty as hell! The vr6 engine conversion made a huge difference, and also makes it a sleeper for people who don't know what it is!Nov 05, 2010

There is nothing to dislike about this light, turn hugging, torque spitting sleeping beast. Althought breaks could use some aftermarket work. Fun car to drive. Big bumper set-up with mud flaps make for dropped wide body look. Not your everyday obnoxious sounding 4 banger! turns heads too. Jul 07, 2010

Recaro seats are perfection. handles amazing (insane since I
added Coilovers and Neuspeed sways/roll bars). TT exhaust is
meaty. Classic GTI styling. Much cooler than every VW that has
been released after this car (Corrado exception 92-94). Roomy,
Rides Nice, Sounds Nice... is there a better car?
Best GTI made.

perfomance is ok it needs more horse power
accel is good for a car that has 115 hp
braking well my brakes dont really work , no tail gateing for me.
my door handles keep breaking but thats common for vw's. my window wipers are stuck on and there is a few othr things but who cares how can you not love a vw gti
the body is in good shape other than a couple dents and scraches and interior is in good shape other than the head liner hangs down, but over all is in good shape

It is great looking car with passat synchro wheels wrap with205/55/15 gt racing tires, red with black trim and interior is amazing with recaro seats. it is very fast and fun to drive with a 1.8l 8 valve 5 speed transmision. just a fun great car.Sep 14, 2009

A COOL!!! looking car, little bit old school but look mint. Solid on the road had mine tuned up with a good bit of kit. Not bad speed for a 1.8.
Looks nice with the leather interior
A bit juicy on fuel and oil
Good overall car

Classic GTI. Upgraded with a bigger, more powerful motor from a 1997 GTI. Fully worked over. Porsche wheels. H&R Cup Kit suspension.

It was a great car but had a lot of weight. It was great at cornering and had very good handling but it was pretty slow for a GTI in fact it was the slowest GTI volkwagen ever produced. It had a 2.0 L engine with 8 valves which produced 115 bhp. For a car that weighted 1380 kg that was to little so it had acceleration 0-60 mph in about 10.5 sec. But it was a great car to own for my first ride!May 06, 2009

Twas a red one and she was excellent, had an amazing feel for the road. They just don't build cars like this one anymore. It wasn't the fastest car on the road, but if you want to have fun no matter what speed you're at, this is the car for you. Sorry, but it only comes with a manual tranny.Dec 20, 2008

It was just a brisk night of driving, down the foggy roads of Germany when I noticed a fallen tree just a few hundred feet in front of me. Knowing that my all German handled suspension could take anything in its path, I increased my velocity. I got closer and closer surpassing the barrier of aerodynamics. Turned an old GTI into a slick little go cart. Leather passat seats bolt in with minor mods to frame rails, full flares and skirts from 16V Jetta, new panels & paint all over, adjustable suspension, all wheel discs, Borla exhaust & 17" FRD wheels w/ Yoki Parada rubber... by far the best street tires I have ever owned.
