Out of the box and into a sleeker body, the luxurious 1992 Pontiac Bonneville gets a much-needed modern updating to its exterior. Gone are the squared-off edges, in favor of more rounded, sloping lines. The base LE trim is dropped, and the 1992 Bonneville now is offered as an SE, a sportier SSE, and the supercharged SSEi. The SE and SSE are powered by a revamped 3.8-liter V6 that now gets 170-hp. The supercharged SSEi tweaks that engine to put out 205-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. All are paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Also new in 1992 is standard dual airbags, to comply with new government regulations. ABS brakes are standard on both the SSE and SSEi, and an option on the SE. The SSEi also comes with traction control. As the top-of-the-line trim, the SSE and SSEi basically offered the same features, with the main difference being the supercharged engine. The SE was now more like last year's LE, with basic features such as fog lights, power windows and locks, and air conditioning, and an opportunity to purchase more options.
The 1992 Bonneville is a full-size sedan for six people, and drivers say the roominess, combined with the comfortable seats, turns it into a spare bedroom. It's smooth and relaxing for long rides, and the new engines are fast and fun to cruise on the highway. It even handles hills well. The Bonneville is solid and indestructible as well, and the SSEi has the feel of a sports car. Disappointed owners report problems with the electrics.

Very dependable car. The 3.8L V6 in this car is pretty amazing. I used this car
to get through college and it did very well considering it had 200k+ miles on it.
During the winter, it never had a problem starting. It handles well for a full
sized sedan. It has independent suspension which helps, but, for some reason,
all wheel disc brakes were left out. It accelerates pretty well and brakes just as
well. The supercharger makes a nice whining sound to let everyone (who knows
what a supercharger sounds like) know what is under the hood. I've heard
some Bonnevilles with custom exhausts and they sound pretty good for a V6.
The interior is nice and has a lot of options. There are 6-way seats with 3
different lumbar controls. The interior is roomy and makes for a good road trip
vehicle even with 4 passengers. Gas mileage, in my experience, is about 25
combined city/highway with about 22 for city and 30 for highway.Oct 21, 2010

This car is my baby. It was was my first car and I drove it for about 8 years before retiring it long term storage about 2 years ago. I miss driving it. I always hear old car guys talk about "that first car" they wish they would not have gotten rid of.....well - I am not taking that same course....My future kids will sell this one when I die!Oct 16, 2010

Most roomy car I have driven but it's a dieing beast. The 3.8L V6 gets things moving quite nicely. It's pretty bad with gas though. Its fun to drive fast in a straight line haha, and you can drift pretty nicely with it when there's snow.Jul 03, 2009

I love my 92 Pontiac bonneville SE it has never let me down once and when i need it is their and always started right up for me. It is good forwho is looking for a safe family car. The gas mileage is good for me. It has alot of power coming from a 3800 Port turned V6 Series 1 engine that run like a champion and the car is very roomy and with large trunk to put alot of thing. I am getting 18-20 miles around town and about close to 30 mile to the gallion on the highway. My cars has 186,000 miles on it and it still going strongJan 30, 2009

ohkay, this is a good reliable car. it has the 3800 motor so itl last a long time. i love the front end, its my favorite part of the car. i also like the comfort. its a really fun car to drive and its really good for long trips. gas could stand to be a bit better though! Jul 21, 2008

This car is my first car that i have ever driven! Ive beaten on it so much that im suprised its still alive! What i like the most is that the engine is entirely reliable. This was my second car. It was relatively young at 6 years old when I had it, but it definitely qualified as a beater where my previous 13 year old rusted out Volvo didn't. It was a big car. The ride was good. The engine was able to keep up at cruising speed and deliver relatively decent mileage on cheap gas. But mechanically, it was a financial drain. Between 10 July 1998 and 8 September 2004, I spent as much or more on this car's maintenance and repairs, as my parents did buying it. 5 days after I sold it to Carmax, while driving through the podium in a wholesale auction, something underneath its dash caught on fire and started smoking. That could have been me. Really dodged a bullet there.
Service life: 10 July 1998 - 8 September 2004 (trade)
Gasoline used: mostly 93 octane before 7/11/03, 87 octane afterwards. Per gallon price ranged from $1.039 (12/28/01) to $1.959 (5/23/04). Over 47000 miles, it averaged 21.55 mpg. A historical footnote, 93 octane gas cost me $1.499/gallon on 9/7/01. On 9/21/01, it was $1.559. I recieved this car as a gift (with a minimal donation)from the owner of In-N-Out. I drove it for a couple of weeks before I left for a job out of the country. It was comfortable to ride in, but nothing special. I don't miss this car. The only thing good about it was the history behind the car. I have a 1992 Bonneville Pontiac
My car dies on right turns and if im going to slow, (like through parking lots and intersections), it stalls when its hot out, the e-brake keeps falling down when i don't even touch it. It dies over speed bumps too. The headlights also don't work and if i hit a pothole they turn off. The hood gets stuck and won't open when i need to check it, and sometimes when im driving the hood f'ing pops up. Should i just junkyard it?
