Available in both two-door coupe and four-door sedan versions, the 1991 Volkswagen Jetta was equipped with a variety of powerplants. Probably one of the most popular was the Jetta GL diesel, which received a boost in power for 1991, to 100 hp. Also available was the Jetta Carat, which came with a 100-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine, and the higher-end GLI, which was equipped with a more powerful 134-horsepower, 2.0-liter gas engine. All versions came with a standard five-speed manual transmission, while a three-speed automatic was optional for the Carat and the GL.
Standard features for the Carat and the GL included bucket seats, power brakes, power steering, a tilt steering wheel, and a rear window defroster, while the GLI added power door locks, Recaro seats, and alloy wheels.
While drivers noted that the Volkswagen Jetta was easy to maintain and fun to drive, they also pointed out that the interior could be noisy and that the cars were prone to mechanical problems.

Love this car because it reminds me of my first car. Lots of interior room and trunk space. Buddy removed the A/C unit, so there is a ton of room to do work in the engine compartment. My family owned a VW repair shop for more than 25 years. Always something to fix on these old birds though. Great for the winter, as skinny tires grip better in the grooves of the ice and snow. The car I picked up is unfortunately automatic and I have to be gentile on the trans with it. I have some bugs I need to work out yet but hope to have it on the road soon! Nov 23, 2012

I would say this is a great project car body wise, the motor runs like a champ. I got it from a guy in Germany and it was rough, but I gave it 3.5K worth of parts and coil over lowering spring, rebuild and beefed up the motor, exhaust, oil, lots and lots of premium high octane fuel, paint touch up, racks, tires, 800 dollar stereo with subs. It's an average family car. It accalerates good, brakes are good, handling is very good. It is a good car and it doesn't need much repairs. Exterior is exelent for a car from 1991. interior is clasic but comfi. It is a family car so it is not so much fun to drive.Aug 20, 2011

Top Auto, ich will kein anderes. Außer später irgendwann mal was mit nem dickeren Motor... Hab ne Menge Geld und Zeit reingesteckt und bin eigentlich rund um mit dem Aussehen zufrieden :) Die Beschleunigung ist für nen 1.6er mit 90er Baujahr akzeptabel, klar musste hier und da mal was repariert werden, hielt sich aber in Grenzen. rare jetta coupe,was originally a project i first started but never got around to completing it also did not want to go through the process of finishing it and taking it through inspection and not passing but it was amazing.

Diesel need I say more? 900kms to a tank(55Litres) turbo whine irreplaceable, slow as balls but it'll tow a ski boat, as long as they're maintained virtually no major problems, sounds great without exhaust, fun in the winter (for drifting)Apr 29, 2010

This is a great car for some one just learning to drive.
built like a rock except the stupid plastic trim pieces.
the down side to the solidity of the car is it's heavy is even with 170 some horse power the acceleration is pretty bad.
the gas millage is really bad for short trips but pretty good for the age of the car.
i haven't had too many problems heater core, breaks have had a few problems, and other small things
i think its fun to drive its really good for being old

Performance: Le falta aceleracion de 0-60km/h, pero de ahi para arriba jala muy bien. buenos frenos, transmicion automatica, 8v, 1.8L, por lo ke yo se tiene 102h.

fast, fun and handles well. i have an aftermarket grill and headlights which make it look sexier and it has a racing clutch, eibach suspension and 5 spd manual tranny which make it a dream to drive. aside from the cat, it runs really well for a car of it's year and mileage.

The Mk2 Jetta was basically a Golf with a boot. It was a really heavy car and didn't even have power steering. Really solid car, barely had a thing go wrong with it throughout it's entire life. Very basic equipment, but very comfortable ride!Apr 27, 2009

From the MK2 generation, comes my 91 Jetta. German built from the Wolfsburg factory; it doesn't suffer the build quality issues like that of other production lines. Power comes from a 1.8 liter, 8 valve, four cylinder. It's solidly built with a Audi block, and a aluminum head; which is mated to a 3 speed automatic. The power comes on gradually, and becomes fun above 3000 rpm all the way to about 6800 rpm.
Faster than most modern sub- econo-boxes, it's fun to drive. The handling is balanced and better than I expected. It's not to be mistaken for a sports car, and certainly not for it's big brother, the GTI. The braking is powerful, and more than ample to stop this car in a hurry. No ABS here, it requires some intelligence.
At speed down the highway it averages about 32 MPG, which is impressive for it's time. Repair costs have be moderate; proper parts are German, and cost proper money.Jan 08, 2009

This car was my mom's car for the longest time. Great little car. Easy to maintain, drive, and keep. It got great gas mileage (32 mpg), and handled great. Zippy little car with some balls to it. Wasn't the fastest in accelerating, but when it got there, it stood strong!Sep 06, 2008

Good solid running car, good on gas and seat 4 people. Lots of trunk room for anything. Good size car for a audio system of any choice. Only bad thing about this car I can say is, it lacks acceleration. Amazing turning and braking.

These cars last into the hundreds of thousands of miles, but parts will need replacement. Most of the things are easily fixed, but other, more major ones must be taken to a dealer unless you are very experienced or have the right tools. this this ran so hurt for so long, burned mad oil but was still good on gas. It got me through a tough financial time without craping out on me. It made lots of weird noises and vibrated down the highway and in idle. I finally killed the poor car when I took it for a 3 hour drive down the highway. Okay, I can't be TOO critical here because it was my wife's first new car. Just out of graduate school, she bought a silver Jetta sedan for the same money as would have bought her a boring Escort/Tracer/Protege. It had nice European "flavor", pretty good handling, that wonderful VW lumpy idle that many of you may remember from the 1.8 litre four, and the quirky musical reminder chime.
But by 15,000 miles there were strange clinks and jingles emanating from under the car when we hit bumps, you couldn't always get the car into first gear when attempting to depart from a stop, and the paint had worn off the leading edges of the poorly-aligned rear passenger doors from road grit coming off the tires.
I swore I'd never buy another VW, and here I am driving another VW (a 2005 Jetta TDI wagon). This time I mean it. Once other automakers, especially Honda, start making diesel-powered cars available in the U.S., there'll be no reason to ever buy a VW.Nov 30, 2007

Ok.. So, Still not getting heat in my 91 Jetta. Heater core is good, flushed it out, all thed lines in the engine compartment are hot and circulating great, new water pump and thermostat is working. Vacuum lines have good air flow. Thinking maybe the air filter box flap may not be working correctly.. Any ideas?
I have the VW Manual with all the diagrams and trouble shooting but feel I'm missing something simple
