1991 Volkswagen Jetta Preview summaryImage

Available in both two-door coupe and four-door sedan versions, the 1991 Volkswagen Jetta was equipped with a variety of powerplants. Probably one of the most popular was the Jetta GL diesel, which received a boost in power for 1991, to 100 hp. Also available was the Jetta Carat, which came with a 100-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine, and the higher-end GLI, which was equipped with a more powerful 134-horsepower, 2.0-liter gas engine. All versions came with a standard five-speed manual transmission, while a three-speed automatic was optional for the Carat and the GL.

Standard features for the Carat and the GL included bucket seats, power brakes, power steering, a tilt steering wheel, and a rear window defroster, while the GLI added power door locks, Recaro seats, and alloy wheels.

While drivers noted that the Volkswagen Jetta was easy to maintain and fun to drive, they also pointed out that the interior could be noisy and that the cars were prone to mechanical problems.

Love this car because it reminds me of my first car. Lots of interior room and trunk space. Buddy removed the A/C unit, so there is a ton of room to do work in the engine compartment. My family owned a VW repair shop for more than 25 years. Always something to fix on these old birds though. Great for the winter, as skinny tires grip better in the grooves of the ice and snow. The car I picked up is unfortunately automatic and I have to be gentile on the trans with it. I have some bugs I need to work out yet but hope to have it on the road soon! Nov 23, 2012

I would say this is a great project car body wise, the motor runs like a champ. I got it from a guy in Germany and it was rough, but I gave it 3.5K worth of parts and coil over lowering spring, rebuild and beefed up the motor, exhaust, oil, lots and lots of premium high octane fuel, paint touch up, racks, tires, 800 dollar stereo with subs. But now it needs to be paintedAug 24, 2012

It's an average family car. It accalerates good, brakes are good, handling is very good. It is a good car and it doesn't need much repairs. Exterior is exelent for a car from 1991. interior is clasic but comfi. It is a family car so it is not so much fun to drive.Aug 20, 2011
