The 1991 Toyota Corolla was virtually identical to the 1990 Corolla, when the model got a more powerful engine and a new entry-level version of the sedan.
The 1991 Toyota Corolla came in many body styles with several trim levels. The sedan came as a base, DX or LE. The wagon was available as a DX or SR5. The coupe came as a SR5 or GT-S. All Corollas came equipped with a DOHC, 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine. The sedans, wagons, and SR5 coupe had a 102-horsepower engine and the GT-S had a 130 horsepower. Fuel economy is about 22 to 33 mpg, depending on the engine.
Owners of the 1991 Corolla complain that the car is underpowered and performs even worse when the air conditioning is running. Still, they tend to praise the car for being reliable and long-lasting, and many have been driving them trouble-free since the car was new.

This car runs great, 21yrs old and it's still going... just had it checked and all it needed was a tierod and the battery was shot. Its a real beater, but keeps going strong.... Love it! I got it with just over 159k on it. I've already put over 1k miles on it in about a months time. Back and forth 70miles 3 days a week for school, trips to friends all over and to NY too... well i own a 1991 toyota corolla station wagon it was a hand me down from my parents, and i thought it was the worst thing ever at first sight then i began to drive it and i loved it. well its a 19 year old car and its got a bit of rust lots of dents and its at almost at 650 000kms and everything is still good on it except the body it got dented up pretty bad because of the farm, but me and my 3 sisters beat the hell out of that car it stood up to everything hitting houses, garages, even a bmw hit it at 50kms and only got a crack in the bumper(bmw was writen off), but it has proved that you cant kill it even if you redline it everyday, ramp it, hit it with a truck, or even stuff the air box full of random things. its not fast getting up to speed but once it gets up to 180kms it keeps going til it redlines found that out on the highway going from the farm to the city(turned a 30min drive into an 8min drive) but i drive it nice now its never see a shop expect for new tires i only do oilchanges, belts, and air filters and thats it, its also good for offroading. as for looks well its sexy(lol im jk) how i met my current girl, and for high school that car served me well(in other words i love the wagon because you can fold down the back seats and you got a bed for you and 2 lucky ladies lmao)Jan 04, 2011

As a manual transmission, I get better accrleration. Braking & handling are ok, but the appearance seems to be back dated. Still I get better milage, low maintenance cost & lots of fun driving this car. So, I drive it very often.Dec 08, 2010

Amazing sexiness!!! It may only be a 1.6L 4A-FE but damn this thing pulls at 3,000RPM! I used to be a true blue Mazda enthusiast but this car has made me question my loyalty o_O! I suppose you could say I have ventured to Toyota now. I never thought I would say this but I love my Toyota Wagon, its a beast!Jun 03, 2010

Performance is decent, it goes 0-60 in probably 6 seconds. The Corolla's appearance is nothing special which I like. The build quality is also decent it only needed repairs on the exhaust. Its a fun car to drive since it can out run a Kia.May 15, 2010

This little Corolla had a 1.6L 4 cyl single cam. 5 speed manual was well suited for this car. After having driven a few autos in the same model, I definitely think the manual was better suited to this car, and definitely made it more fun. Manual allowed some nice little burnouts. Bought this car from my parents for $1000, and it lasted me a good few years after that. This was a typical cheap P-plater car.
My "helpful" additions:
chrome wheels (i sprayed the steel wheels with chrome spray paint)
more audio power than engine power (2 x 3 way 6x9" speakers in rear parcel shelf, 2 x 6" splits in front doors, 2 x 4" 2 way speakers in rear doors, 1 x 15" sub and 1 x 12" sub in a custom made sub box enclosure which took up the entire boot)
TRD stickers which made the stock corolla go SOOOO much faster
Some great memories in this car.Mar 17, 2010

105bhp and 142nm,
It has Alpine stereo system with SPL-Dynamics speakers and JL-Audios10" subwoofer.
14" Melber aluminium wheels with Good Year tyres.
LED-braking lights and Hella front lights and fog lights.
It needs more power and harder and lower chassisNov 25, 2009

The thing was notoriously crap. Suspect handling, suspect build quality, suspect performance, but the brakes were good. And so was the stereo, special thanks to me and Dannel. 3 crashes in the 3 years I owned it, one my fault.Nov 22, 2009

Perfect family sedan that deserves respect.
We used this car as a family, and when I say family, I mean everyone in the family used it for several years taking turns. The only problem we had in 11 years was a snapped carburetor belt in a long distance drive. And then of course there was me, the last family member to drive it. It was totaled in an accident I had and needless to say losing this car really did hurt back then.Sep 29, 2009

The best car I've ever had. When we sold it at 228,000 miles, it still ran as if it were brand new. As long as you do normal maintainance, it ran great! I even drove it through a blizzard and it did great. As far as I know, it's still running.Sep 09, 2009

This car was very dependable (mostly, until the head gasket blew) and got great gas mileage. However, the motor was very weak, and struggled at highway speeds. The interior and exterior were both very cheap and i didn't feel safe in this car at all. Sep 09, 2009

its a great little vehicle with a pretty decent 4 speed box and a 6L four cylinder with NOS. What more can you ask for? For a 1991 model with only 74,000 K's on the dash it does a pretty good job.Aug 08, 2009

Performance, though not great it is decent and easily keeps
up with highway traffic. With the addition of a K+N air filter,
synthetic oil and good spark plugs I upped the gas milage by
5 MPG to 48 HWY. 1.6 liter engine and 5 speed. If I kept my
speed down I am sure I could hit 50. Handling is great as this
was an upgrade from an old Tercel.
Build quality is excellent and parts are easy to locate used
and new. Appearance its a nice little wagon nothing
spectacular that stands out, its an average looking car that
nobody take much notice of. Cost of ownership has been
low I did the usual things maintenance wise and it has not
let me down. Most of my expense has gone into Oil changes
and gas. Fun Factor, as a wagon its been very versatile. I've
managed to sleep in it when I went camping and the rain was
too much.Jun 30, 2009

Nice car overall, but as it was old it had it's share of
body issues. Engine wouldn't quit. Started instantly,
even in -20°F weather. I was a little under powered so
it wasn't the funnest thing to drive, but Corollas aren't
supposed to be performance cars.Apr 14, 2009

Nothing can be worse than driving a corolla. Speed isn't
the sharpest knife in its arsenal, looks...not really,
handling....yeah you get the picture. Its a car that'll get
you to point B from point A, but you'll just get there feeling
bored out of your mind.Apr 08, 2009

Great first car, fun to drive and easy to maintain. Not a very quick as its only a 1.6L 4cyl. Great on fuel economy.
Cost me $5000 up front in 2002. Inexpensive to maintain.
Not the best looking but great for a daily driver.Apr 07, 2009

There are many things a man looks forward to in his life, and they are always special. This being my first car, it was no exception.
As a performer, it's nothing special. this being a regular Corolla, it was powered by a pitiful 1.6 105 HP 4A-FE mated to a 3-speed auto gearbox. Even with all those years under it's belt the Corolla was able to get out of it's own way, but passing required a little forethought. Carrying more than 2 people, or any heavy load, pushed the little 4-banger to it's little limit as well.
build quality was what you'd expect of an older car. some things didn't work, and some things worked some of the time. The seats were faded and worn, and everything was loose.
Overall cost... well, here's where things get hairy. The car was originally $1100, but shortly after it needed a new engine due to the PO's neglect. Over the 2 years I owned it, things would die in 3 month spurts. first year it was engine, muffler, bodywork. Second year was starter, alternator, CV joint, and Transmission. It wasn't really all that good on gas as you would expect from a small car, averaging a silly ~28 mpg combined.
It still had some good points though, as cheap beater, it was fun to drive in the twisties. Decent handling and a little pep helped, and the overall feel that a tiny car with no safety features brings did as well.
It was old, tired, weak, didn't have much room, and was an money pit, but I loved her all the same.

Performance - About 70kw at the front wheels
Build Quality - old car needs new bearings maybe new radiator.
Appearance - Very clean interior for its age exterior needs a few dents removed otherwise not bad maybe new paint job.
Cost - $50 for a full tank good for bout 500km reliable
Fun Factor- lacks power does good burnouts and 180's handling aint great either maybe due to bald tires :P

No major problems. Just regular maintenance. The upholstery is still perfect. The paint is still good. I noticed a hole forming in the rug under the gas pedal. Great little car and still running strong with 189,000 miles. Oh, and it gets 30 MPG! and is a very comfortable car to drive.Oct 08, 2008

There are scratches all over it, dents, one of the tail lights has a chunk missing out of the plastic, it need a new battery, it doesn't hold windshield wiper fluid, the radiator can be tweaky, it involves alot of work but on the other hand i've learned so much about cars from fixing this think up that its kind of worth it.Sep 15, 2008

Very reliable, not too uncomfortable to drive. Always starts and things did not break easily, except the rear axel when it hit a curb during a drift-session which went over the limits ;) Very economic, could run 20km/l or 5 liter pr. 100 km.

An honest, everyday, family car that never "argued" under pressure and of course hasn't presented any problemsDec 03, 2007
My 91 toyota corolla will not start. It is an in- between year model. And has NO crank position sensor. It acts like it wants to start but it just wont. The spark plugs have been checked along with alternator both are working fine. Ill be the first to say i know very little about repairing cars but have to do this on my own. I have taken photos of every inch under the hood to see if i could see a problem , but have no clue what to look for. If its not the crank position sensor nor the plugs nor alternator what else could it be ? And also how do i check the ignition switch? Thank yoi
I have a 1991 Corolla that was given by a family member. It loses coolant and a little bit of white smoke comes out of the exhaust. But there is no coolant with the oil, the car doesn't overheat, and runs perfectly fine so idk if it is a head gasket problem or not.
So my blower motor switch is broken on my 1991 Corolla (not the resistor), it's not worth the price to buy a new one. According the diagram, continuity is 5 and 6 for low, and 5, 6, and 8 for high. So does this mean if I hook a toggle switch with 5 and 6 on one side, and 8 on the other, I should be able to switch between low and high using the switch?
