The 1989 4Runner was built on the same platform as the Toyota pickup. Toyota took many steps to make the SUV different from the truck, including making the 4-door model the standard, rather than the 2-door (which became increasingly hard to find).
A new 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder was standard, while a 3.0-liter V6 was available as an upgrade. Both engines came as rear- and all-wheel drive.

Like: Performance, Handling, Appearance, Fun to Drive, Great at 4WD, Well maintained, Quite Loud for a 4 Cylinder, Awesome Speakers,Colour, Hieght Clearance, Is a Toyota, is a Great Starter Car.
Dislike: Little Rough, Not very fast, Towing capasity not very high, Doesn't Beat the Landcruiser though.Mar 26, 2011

i loved my 89 4runner it was my favorite vehicle yet
the removable top was a blast. this truck was tough as
nails and the only part that ever broke offroad was the
rear bumper. although fairly gutless on the highway i
could get close to 29 mpg canadian. the truck did
burn its share of oil and the 2 doors were a little
iinconvient but it was awesome regret sellingAug 01, 2009

oh my god!! This truck is so much fun.Ive got 33 swampers on it and go muddin all the time.The 22re is a great motor its a 4 banger so its great on gas.The truck only weighs about 3500 pounds so its perfect for playin in the mud or bush.The removable top makes this truck sexy as can be by being able to go topless.She s seats 5 comfortable and 7 if your playin.i will have this truck till i die i just LOVE it!!!!!!!The list goes on and on!!!!Dec 11, 2008
