Not much changed in the 1989 Camaro. Camaro brought the Rally Sport back in 1989, this time with the abbreviated "RS" as a trim name. The RS came standard with a 2.8L V6, a slightly smaller engine than some expected, as it was designed to lower insurance costs.
The only V8 available in RS models in 1989 was the LO3, a TBI 305-cubic-inch 170-horsepower engine that put out 255 foot-pounds of torque at 2400rpms. A new throttle made for much smoother acceleration in the 1989 model.
The IROC-Z and RS convertible seemed to ignore the insurance worries, each arriving with a V8 engine capable of 170 horsepower. An optional 5.0L V8 (the L98) was also available, but only in the IROC. Two versions of the L98 were available, one at 230 horsepower and another with 240 horsepower and a 3.27 Borg-Warner rear axle.

The lack of horsepower and a better gear ratio from the factory would have been nice. There are also some models that will be worth a chunk of change in the future. I wish that the upgrades weren't so exspensive. Having a serp. belt and not the old V-belts set up.Oct 04, 2014

I found this car wasting away with a 5.0 with automatic transmission body was in great shape needed a little interior work ut that was fine, so i striped out the motor and transmission and built and installed a 5.7 litre then installed a 5 speed transmission. this car is fast and fun.Jul 15, 2014

I've owned this IROC for 15 years. I bought it from the original owner here in Oregon. It's always garaged and covered. It's been a mulitple award winner at regional car shows. I would not sell or trade it for anything!Jun 09, 2014

Power, two stars: It's a 2.8 V6, what can you really expect?
Looks/ Style: First off, IT"S A CAMARO! Second, it's still sleek and takes
some of it's styling from the corvette of the time.
Maintenance cost: Not bad, I work on it myself.
Back seats: The only people who could sit in those things are little
people, and double amputees. No joke there is three inches between
the front of the back seat, and the back of the front seat. We all know
there only there so it's considered a "Passenger car" on the insurance
forms.
Handling: Fairly decent, after all it was Built for the International Race
Of Champions, better known as IROC. Yes, it has the potential to be a
quarter mile beast, but it can also be a decent auto crosser.
Front seats: Pretty average. Nothing special, but they are fairly
comfortable.
Reliability: It's an RS with a 2.8, been worked hard over it's 119K miles.
Yet it still starts up on the coldest day MN winter has to offer after
sitting for two months untouched.
Family car: One word, NO!
Fuel economy: Compared to a top fuel dragster this thing absolutely
sips fuel at 12mpg highway.
Price: Averaging between 1-5 grand for a fairly decent running 305 tbi
model, I'd say it's a good entry level muscle car with the potential to
decimate most vehicles on the road.
Cargo capacity: I can fit a pair of twelves in the back and maybe a shirt
or two.
Overall: Maybe I'm biased (I'm a chevy guy, and this is my first car) but I
like it. The looks may not be everybody's cup of tee, to me this car is a
winner. Nov 02, 2011

Currently a project. All torn apart currently, but will be one mean machine soon enough. Should be pushing around 600 horsepower to the wheels, and hopefully spank some Subarus. Should have no problem scaring the passenger. Smooth rear tires is the norm. Jul 14, 2010

The IROC had a 5.7 350ci engine and it was fast as hell. My particular car looked like it came off the showroom floor. The trans went out, and the engine seized shortly after the trans was rebuilt. I would like to have another someday, as redneck as that sounds.Nov 08, 2009

This is the best car in the world in my opinion. It is fast, handles like a dream, and accelerates like a monster. It doesnt get great gas mileage. It is a beuatiful car and yet so aggresive in its styling. I would only suggest this car if you like driving circles around mustangs or if you like running through mountains at speed.Sep 22, 2009

This car has never had a problem, its been over 200k miles and back again. :P The only thing with this car is that from 82-92 GM has never considered still putting big block engines into this car. They did into the monte carlo but not the camaro.. sadlySep 16, 2009

I had been looking for a 3rd generation with the V8 manual transmission car that was black for sometime. It is a great car and fun to drive. Not too much room to do plug changes. It is very reliable and does not cost much to keep up!Sep 01, 2009

I absolutely love this car, the performance is great, the
appearance is the most impressive part, but it is a gas hog,
and I've had to put it in the shop many times, the problem,
CAR ALARM, if you have this car, take the alarm out!!! I just
saved you a buttload of money, I've got about 15G in mine

Car handles like a dream. The acceleration is incredible. With a V6 it lacks a little on the high end. Solid car, built to last. Comfortable ride. Gas mileage isn't great but who cares? All in all this is one fun car to drive.Jun 12, 2009

This car was very fun to drive first of all. Though the performance of the 5.0 v8 and the 2.73 gears were pretty on the low end it was still fast for being that. The car was tough and took a very heavy beating...great car for a teen first driver except for the fact that it had no airbags but it felt like a tank. Personally I am not that into the 3rd gen Camaros, I love the 1st gen and the 4th gen Camaros but it was still a pretty nice looking car and it was VERY clean. Mar 10, 2009

What can I say, it was the run of the mill IROC, but I always liked them as a kid. When I graduated college I bought it as a gift for myself. It was 7 years old and had under 60,000 miles. The body has held up well, and everything works. Sadly, the quality is far superior to the new GM cars I have been buying. Very fun to drive. It feels like coming home!Jan 07, 2009

Not a bad starter car, can still find these for a decent price in good shape. The looks might not be fore some, but in my opinion they're not that bad. Who knows, maybe these cars will do the same as the Mopar B bodys and balloon in value in 15 years. Maybe not as extensive though...Jun 14, 2008

I owned an 1989 IROC as well as a 1986 IROC. The TPI injection produced tons of BHP. And I remember being pinned to the seat the first time I really got into the throttle. I currently own a 1989 Camaro RS I got this car as I project car. But I can recommend the IROC model as it is great right from the showroom floor. And now there are tons of after market products to really get the power this car is able to produce. I know of many peolpe that have only gotten 400BHP and more from these cars. Good luck and enjoy your car. Thats the most inportant thing in any car that you own. Enjoy it and take great care of it.

89 camaro 2.8L Fuel pump wasn’t pumping fuel thru the lines. But was turning on and pushing air through the lines. So I Replaced the fuel pump and I am having the same problem as before. Does anybody know what could cause this problem I am lost here lol?
I have my father's 1989 Chevrolet IROC Z28 with low mileage, t-tops, very clean little to no rust (the garage told me that is important.) A beautiful car located in Ada, OK - just know what the realistic value is here. I want to sell it - I need my garage back. This car is totally garage kept.
Does anyone know how many 1989 Camaro RS V8 T-Tops were made? I bought my brand new and still own! I bought it for my 25th Bday. Now I'm 57 and starting to restore it. Been sitting for 15 years, still looks great for age. But needs TLC. This mom can't wait till its road ready Can't wait to take off those T-tops, and cruise down PCH in California! Beautiful Bright Blue Metallic!
Car will not turn or start from ignition replaced starter relay starter fuel relay new ignition key and cylinder new neutral switch new ignition coil new distributor cap new ignition module still nothing o and new fuel pump relay
