I bought his as a present for myself. Not wanting splurge, this was an affordable classic. Looks great, handles well. Definitely a two seater. Love the sound and the feel, the smell of the leather without the expense of a newer car. Don't expect to win any races as its pretty low HP by modern standards. Low mpg for a 2.5 l engine even if driven carefully, 19 to 20 mpg. Parts are expensive and maintenance will be too if you dont do a lot yourself. To replace a windshiled wiper motor? $850 for parts plus labor. I got a rebuilt for $150 and did it myself. Timing belt is the big issue, tensioning and replacement every 40K.Apr 15, 2014

It is just a lot of fun, and in Northern New York it stands out. This is my first Porsche. I have had MGB's Triumph, and a number of American car but I like this most of all so far. I am working my way up to a newer model. I have found decent mechanics who not too pricy which makes driving more pleasurable. I also belong to PCA (membership pending ). I am happy to belong to a group that I can share information with and ask questions of. Thank you.Nov 26, 2013

great affordable sportscar. built in west germany, which stands for quality. not a single spot of rust even after 24 years. looks up to date too, and with 50/50 weight balance it is great fun to drive. and the best of all: its a porsche!May 05, 2012

One of the rare automatics imported in this year...Black with tan leather interior..seats have cloth inserts..added jvc kameleon cd player...adds a very nice touch to the already nice interior..Has removable sunroof with storage bag in rear with hold downs so it doesn't move around during hard driving...May 08, 2010

The one I owned is a 944 turbo S. With a more powerful engine and brake system, this car is one of my favorite car. Bars and performance chips added and one of the best rack day car i've ever owned.Dec 30, 2009

The Porsche 944 Turbo is one of the best handling cars of the last 30 years. Named the Best Handling Road Car in America in 1986. In terms of performance, the 944 Turbo, also known as the 951, is bulletproof. Try 163 MPH in a 4-cylinder car, or punch it to 180+ with a few modifications.
In terrms of reliability, you get what you pay for. If you buy a 951 for cheap which has been abused, you will get screwed in repair costs.
The 951 is a fine example of 1980's auto design, with smooth but curvy lines, straight edges, and an agressive stance.

Fast car that does a little bit of everything well. Its fast in a line handles well and stops well. I think it looks great and with the right rims its an eye catcher. However its a Porsche so that means it needs regular maintenance. Its not the type of car you can let things go onJul 04, 2009

The 944 Turbo is a completely underrated car. As a daily driver it's actually really fun, it's quick, handles amazing and gets great gas mileage. If you find a well taken care of example they can be very reliable as well. Problem is when something breaks parts are very expensive, as well as labor. These make the perfect track car, but can used everyday if you live down south.The Turbo S will do 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and out handle nearly any car on the road. A perfect example can be obtained for about 15k which considering the performance is quite impressive.Oct 06, 2008

Crisp handling despite the 924S wheels that mine had, which led to quite a few interesting moments. I note with fondness watching a lamppost getting closer, but out of the side window as the car executed a mega slide. I miss those simple non TC days.Feb 20, 2008

Hi. I am a newbie Porsche wanabee. More like a mid-life crisis guy. I am looking at a very nice 1988 944S with only 60,000 miles. Timing belt, tensioner and water pump done at 52,000 kms but 4 years ago. The private seller states all will need to be changed summer of 2012 due to age, not mileage. The car is very clean in and out and the engine compartment is spotless. Is the age of these parts more important than the very low mileage since changed?

Howdy, have an 88 944 NA all options except sunroof. Thinking of doing the engine mounts and redoing the front seats. Any suggestions for redoing or replacing the front seats? Have a few shops here in Northern VA do some of the work, I have done a lot of repairs myself, also. If any one has suggestions for shops here in the Northern VA area by Fort Belvoir please share.

Engine cuts out during acceleration.
After turning a corner, initial acceleration from a stop or initial acceleration when passing the engine shuts down. It can be restarted while coasting and starts immediately. This only occurs ocasionally like every 50 miles or so. I changed the ignition system, fuel filter and fuel pump relay, but no help. Anybody think the Mass Air Flow unit could be the problem or how could I clean it to eliminate it as a problem.
